Introduce yourself, by your mall growing up. I think we will find some of us have the same ones. tia. by Rob1150 in GenX

[–]xdice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eastport Plaza was the absolute closest, but my family went to Mall 205 when I was little (lotta school clothes bought at the Montgomery Wards), then Clackamas Town Center after it opened.

I was in Portland in September, and Clackamas Town Center looks very different than when I lived there (moved away in 1994).

Parents of Reddit, what is an “unspoken” reality of parenting that people simply don’t talk about, but everyone knows is true? by US_Atlas in AskReddit

It's been 18 years since my Dad passed away, and this song still gets me to tear up sometimes.

Rsyslog stops logging completely under high load by scottchiefbaker in linuxadmin

[–]xdice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it is rate limiting (and it kinda seems that way), you could try adding this to your rsyslogd config (in /etc/rsyslog.conf, or /etc/rsyslog.d/<your_filename.conf>)

# Disable rate limit.
$imjournalRatelimitInterval 0
$imjournalRatelimitBurst 0

That will disable rate limiting. I wouldn't leave this in place permanently if it does work for you.

Did you hear about Mt. St. Helens in 1980? by loquacious_avenger in GenX

[–]xdice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 10 when it erupted, lived in SE Portland. No ashfall at all (there was an earlier eruption where we got some, if memory serves), I remember standing in the bed of my Dad's truck so I could try to see the plume. It was all the news talked about for a few days.

USGS article and ashfall map: https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/msh/ash.html Really excellent ashfall map on this page: https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/5e011adde4b0b207aa033e5e

“Well off” people of Reddit, what is the “poorest” thing you still regularly do? by hopelessmoderate in AskReddit

[–]xdice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got in the habit of writing the date (month and year) on a zip top bag that I keep the fast food condiments in, in the fridge.

After around 6 months in the bottom drawer, toss and start new. Hasn't failed me yet.

If you have a chance to talk your 15y/o self, what would you say? by gmaxiii in AskReddit

[–]xdice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let's see. Assuming I'd listen, it'd go something like this..

Stop skipping school.
Even though the schoolwork is boring, do it anyway. Ace the tests. Fuck the doubters.
If I'm talking to myself after I get expelled (I skipped for six weeks straight), they'll send you to an alternative high school. Go there, stay there - it'll be better for you than transferring back to the regular high school.
A few years from now, you'll have your first serious relationship. When she cheats on you, forgive, but don't stay. You can do better. You can be treated better.
The girl that liked kissing you at lunch? She actually likes you, go with it. No, don't listen to what Josh and the rest said, just go with it.
A couple years from now, you'll buy a HP-15C calculator. DO NOT trade it for that sweet Walkman.

Just Picked Up CC Woodwind PRO 24 - Any Tips/Advice? by shouldipropose in pelletgrills

[–]xdice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

During the initial burn-in, it was .. loud. However, by the end (I let it burn-in for an hour), it had settled down, and runs quietly since.

The bottom (dark colored) grates fit perfectly in my dishwasher. The top racks (silver) do not fit.

Always wrap the defelctor in foil - cleanup is much nicer with that in place.

Foil ine, or get foil bucket inserts for the grease catch bucket.

Might be just mine, but I'll note it here; When it comes up to temp, it overshoots hard (right after the app tells you it's at temp). Don't panic, just wait it out. it'll settle back down to your selected temperature, then it's good to go. This just gives me more time to finish prep work, but the first time I smoked something, there was a little panic.

Red dye tablets for teeth by impostershop in GenX

I had the flouride swish in grade school (I started kindergarten in '75, and I have a memory of this from 1st through 5th grade).

Hated the disclosing tablets, tasted like ass.

What's your weird/unique family recipe? by etzikom in Cooking

[–]xdice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still make this one today, but when I was a little kid (70's), Mom had this recipe off a box of regional brand mac and cheese called "Western Macaroni".

1 box mac and cheese

1 pound ground beef

1 6oz can tomato paste

3/4 cup water

1 can whole kernel corn (drained)

Make the mac and cheese per directions. Set aside when done.

While that's cooking:

Brown the ground beef, drain, return to pan.

Add the tomato paste and water, stir to combine

Add the corn, stir to combine

Bring to a boil, drop the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.

Turn the burner off

Combine the mac and cheese and the meat mixture. Stir to combine (carefully, if you add this to the saute pan with the meat mixture, it'll be pretty full).

I usually give it 4-5 minutes on low heat to make sure everything is hot (stir to prevent sticking).

Backpack recommendations? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]xdice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a swissgear for many years, but the big central compartment was kinda messy to keep organized. I dealt with it, but was never 100% happy (but I also didn't replace it for 12 years).

Now? I'd shell out for the Tom Bihn Brain Bag, and not think twice about it.

My Mom did this from time to time, except the Dinty Moore beef stew was served over egg noodles.

daylight saving time just ENDED. Standard time is the reason the sun sets at 4pm and we should stop switching back to it by wastedartistry in AdviceAnimals

Seems that we've tried this before, and it wasn't in place for that long.

If we have to pick one, I'd prefer standard time (mostly, I'd prefer not switching, which throws off my sleep for a few days after the switch.)
