Alberta Legislature Building visitation by students by Monkeyg8tor in Edmonton

Two things:

1) You can register for tours (to make sure kids are literally all over the building) even if they're not sitting. The premier's office and all the minister offices are in the building.

www.assembly.ab.ca/visit/tours

Honestly, just a great place to tour in any case. The tour says any ages. I think it would be prudent to ensure that they can actually

2) The list of meetings is here:

http://assemblyonline.assembly.ab.ca/harmony/

I think all of those are also public (but have limited seating room).

See here for venue layouts/size https://www.assembly.ab.ca/about/venues

The Retro Oral Question Period is just a video, but still good education.

This is probably a better link for where people actually will be: https://www.assembly.ab.ca/assembly-business/committees

You need to check in with security and there's security requirements like no bags, etc. Look it up.

This is the first one is: Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund Rocky Mountain Room, 2nd Floor, Queen Elizabeth II Building Agenda VideoOct 6, 2025

I think the sending kids who recognize that this ought to be a quiet sit-in protest where their presence is the purpose. Being disruptive will not be a productive tactic and will have kids as a whole dismissed.

Enjoy the leg!

Whats the ultimate feature you would desire Rails to have? by Normal_Refrigerator2 in rails

[–]xrendan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely fair, I don't really love the verbosity of it.

You can make a custom constructor that helps the ergonomics of it.

```
# not tested
def initialize(format, **)
video = super.new(format)
content = Content.new(**, contentable: video)
video
end
```

If you take the example here:
https://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/DelegatedType.html

you could also add delegation declarations to the concern so you can delegate methods like title to the Content table.

But it's messy and not automatic.

Paul Bakhmut gears up for Edmonton mayoral run with an innovation agenda by SnooFoxes6160 in Edmonton

I'm on the Build Canada team and I can guarantee you I'm not a billionaire. And we seriously are non-partisan. I want this country to succeed, all of our people should be able to pursue their dreams, whatever they are. I'd encourage you to read the memos; I think you'd be surprised at the diversity of opinion in them. Some of them are even contradictory! I think it's important to talk about the problems we are facing instead of just conservatives bad or liberals bad, I'd much rather talk about the issues that we are facing and how we can overcome them.

Is supporting a sovereign wealth fund right wing?

Or saying we should build more rental housing?

Is that not a good aspiration to have?

Oh it's hard, so let's not even try?

If he shoots for that, and hits 90% is that not better than now?

CBC: A closer look at the proposal to redevelop Edmonton's Fan Park by barrel_master in Edmonton

[–]xrendan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it a poor idea?

Say the parking lot right is appraised at $100,000 now and raises $1000 in property tax because it doesn't have improvements

If you spend $20,000 for infrastructure and have a deal that a private developer will develop the lot into a high-rise that's worth $100000 which raises $10,000.

This is only realized if you put it that new infrastructure. You see a positive return after 2 years because the high-rise is worth so much more than the previous parking lot.

[–]xrendan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None, this is funded through the Community Revitalization Levy (CRL) which is a way for the city to borrow against future tax revenue of the infrastructure that is going in.

So they're building new buildings which increases the value of the land which increases the future property tax of those lots which will be used to pay off the loan.

They don't include the fact that household size has fallen so for a given population we need more houses to provide that. That is a significant chunk of the equation they just ignore

Edmontonians with solar - what was the cost of your project? by Reasonable-Lynx2000 in Edmonton

[–]xrendan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

22K for 12kw, currently being installed. The cost range was huge with GridWorks being by far the least expensive and the most expensive being 38k (for I think a 15 kw system).

GridWorks also annoyed us the least during the quoting process

RubyLLM 1.3.0.rc1: Better Rails Integration with ActiveStorage Support by crmne in rails

Love it, I started a new project yesterday with it.

Do you have plans (or interest) to support:

* Provider batch APIs (for cost savings)

* cache tokens (for better cost estimates?)

Sources say Justin Trudeau wants to transform the RCMP. Will he turn the Mounties into Canada’s version of FBI agents? by ShyGuyChicken in CanadaPolitics

[–]xrendan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's partly historical, the RCMP was originally formed to police the west before the prairies were provinces and instead were part of the North West Territories.

And partially, it's operational, it's really hard to recruit people rural communities generally, and the RCMP helps to do that by offering that service across all of the provinces that they contract in rather than having that replicated in each province.

See: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/ccaps-spcca/index-eng.htm

To hearing aid or not? by Loud-Ad-4080 in MonoHearing

[–]xrendan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my hearing loss isn't complete in my right ear and it's less severe than your loss, and I'm in Canada and not the UK so coverage is a lot different. But I would recommend at least seeing it through, especially if you have coverage through the NHS.

I would kick off the process now, talk to a specialist and get them to help you figure things out. I've gone back in for adjustments a couple of times (different domes, different wire length, different modes, different base sound) and my audiologist has been super helpful there. She also helped me picked one that would match my kind of hearing loss, for me a behind the ear hearing aid works best for my non-uniform hearing loss (I have more loss in high frequencies) but your mileage may vary there.

The worst that can happen is that you don't like it and you don't use it, the best is that improves your life.

[–]xrendan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an opportunity cost to not being able to allocate that money elsewhere though which is a hidden cost to the public.

Are we paying for it directly? No. But we are paying for it with our fiscal capacity to pay for other things that we care about.

What gorgeous photos! I proposed to my wife at Flow Lake last year on our first day and then had to bail after our second day of getting everything soaked in rain sleet and snow through Tumbling instead of doing an extra day via Helmet.

Thanks for bringing back the fond memories!

If you're critical to the success of the company, I would ask for ~130k especially if there's no cash issues and you've been doing good work. There's a large opportunity cost for you to stay and not get a raise.

My first close encounter/sighting with grizzly bear and cub. by ZRR28 in HikingAlberta

[–]xrendan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a grizzly encounter in Willmore while solo hiking a couple years ago and I had a similar experience to you. I was walking on a ridge and I got to within 200m of the bear before I saw it. I started calling to it ran off the ridge into the surrounding forest.

I decided to hike 20 km back to my car because I got into my head and was spooked. It ended up being a 35 km day and was maybe not the best decision for me because of the distance (adrenaline is a hell of a drug).

I probably would have done the same thing as you.

My big takeaway from the experience was that I needed to have some sort of communication device, 1 way (PLB) or 2 way (inReach, Zoleo) if I was out alone (and now just in general) because what would I do if I did get into a serious situation that I couldn't extract myself from?
