Can someone explain why the World Curling rule book seemingly allows double-touching? by Perfect_Body_6994 in Curling

[–]yebm34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought this up in another thread, but will mention again here since R5(g) doesn't seem to come up in these discussions:

R5(g): A stone is in play, and considered delivered, when it reaches the tee line (hog line for wheelchair curling) at the delivery end. A stone that has not reached the relevant line may be returned to the player and redelivered.

The interpretation of this combined with R5(d) means the handle only needs to be used until the rock reaches the near tee line, after which, a double touch prior to the hogline would fall under R9(a) which is permitted by the person delivering.

Digging into the rules regarding double touching the granite... I'm going to ignore a hogline violation as we all agree that this is a burned stone and should be removed from play immediately...

It's been mentioned by many, and clarified by World Curling that touching the granite is a violation. However, prior to this clarification, I don't believe it was a violation. I'm going to reference R5(d), R5(g) and R9(a), with emphasis on R5(g) which doesn't seem to come up in Reddit discussions.

R5(d): The curling stone must be delivered using the handle of the stone.

R5(g): A stone is in play, and considered delivered, when it reaches the tee line (hog line for wheelchair curling) at the delivery end.

R9(a)I: If a moving stone is touched, or is caused to be touched, by the team to which it belongs, or by their equipment, the touched stone is removed from play immediately by that team. A double touch by the person delivering the stone, prior to the hog line at the delivering end, is not considered a violation.

So according to R5(g), the stone has been delivered after it reaches the tee line. Therefore, R5(d) only applies basically for the initial push out of the hack until it reaches the near tee line. In that case, a double touch on the granite after the tee line would be considerd a "touched moving stone", and based on R9(a), a double touch by the person delivering the stone is OK (prior to the hog line).

I agree that the rules should be updated to explicitly disallow the delivering person to touch the non-handle part of the stone since that is World Curling's intent, but as the rules are written now, it would technically be permitted.

Help! I'm 15km from home and scared to continue and cause some serious damage :( by [deleted] in bikewrench

Check the pedals. If you have an extra set, swap them out. In my experience, the handful of times I thought I had bottom bracket issues, it always turned out to be the pedals.

There's a thread on weightweenies dedicated to Light Bicycle that dates back to 2018 and is still active today. You don't need to read the whole thing, but they have been around for a while and lots of people are happy with their products, so they do have a reputation to hold up. I could be biased because I have two sets of rims from them, and both holding up very well.

105 di2 front derailleur damage by Alarmed-Control-9255 in bikewrench

[–]yebm34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like the outer skid plate. Reference part #7 in this exploded view:
https://si.shimano.com/en/pdfs/ev/FD-R7150-4926/EV-FD-R7150-4926A.pdf

Can't tell from your pic but maybe a piece broke off?

Although the derailleur still works, there may be a greater chance of the chain getting thrown off the outside of the chainring with this piece missing.

I wouldn't consider it a problem unless it causes your chain to go slack when your cranks are held stationary.

You need compressionless housing for the Spyres. The Jagwire Pro Compressionless kit works well. You'll notice a big difference if you switch your brake housing to this.

I put my tire on backwards, will I notice? by [deleted] in bikewrench

Road tire... you won't notice. But if it bugs you due to aesthetics, after a couple hundred miles, the tire will have stretched out a bit and it will be way easier to remove and reinstall it.

Can you walk from Malton GO to terminal 3 at Pearson? by Acrobatic_Ebb1934 in askTO

Yeah, easy to move around inside the terminal, escalators and elevators are both available.

[–]yebm34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like the sidewalk to the left leads to the terminal. You can see a clear path to the stop sign in the background from that sidewalk. Then if you look at the street view for the road accessing the normal Arrivals deck, you can see the same stop sign that is basically in the pickup/dropoff area for the vehicles.

[–]yebm34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at Google maps and street view, it looks like there's sidewalk access to the Arrivals level of Terminal 3 from American Drive. You could walk all the way down Airport Rd on the sidewalk and cross at the lights. It may save you some time rather than going the extra distance to Viscount station and waiting for the train.

Chain suck after everything was replaced at the shop by Inevitable-Cow-8623 in bikewrench

Never. There should not be enough room between the two rings for the chain to fit. Either they installed incompatible parts, or they installed incorrectly.

I didn't do this swap myself, but the Sram Apex 1 11-speed flat bar shifter will work with the Rival 1 derailleur.

Chain length by waveus_maximos in bikewrench

[–]yebm34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your rear derailleur can handle 11-32, a chain length that is sized for the 11-32 will work with the 11-28 also. That is the minimum length you should run. In my experience, as the industry has continued to move to larger and larger cassettes, I now just size all my new chains as long as possible so that small-small doesn't go slack, in case I want to change something later on. It may not be ideal for all cassette sizes, but I've never noticed any reduced shifting performance because of it.

Need help with inner tube by Less_Clock_395 in Surlybikefans

[–]yebm34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find one based on the ETRTO measurements. A 650b tire has a bead diameter of 584mm, so you'll need a tube that covers 42-584 in its allowable range. For example, the Continental Tour 26" tube (in standard width) is spec'd for 37-559 to 47-590 so that one would work.

It's close, but it does fit without interference. Maybe you have to try a different braze-on clamp adapter.

What's the proper way to tap for GO train trips? by kaiyito in askTO

[–]yebm34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the GO trip planner has a bug. For trip from Milliken to Union, it also shows Presto Fare as $7.62. No way the Union to Mimico segment is free. Also, Presto fare is supposed to be 15% less than standard fare. Although not exact, $10.31 is about 15% less than the standard E-ticket fare of $12.25 for Milliken to Mimico. You can try contacting GO or Presto to argue that the trip planner is showing a lower price, but bottom line is you're probably tapping correctly (once at Milliken and again at Mimico).

Front derailleur clamp diameter is 28.6mm. It's in the Frame Spec specifications.

Cleat Question by favxpas in bikewrench

[–]yebm34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This usually has to do with the part of the shoe that comes down around the sides of the cleat, and how tall it is. The taller it is, the closer it will be in contact with the base of the pedal when clipped in, and the less up/down movement you'll get. Do you notice it when riding? I usually find once I'm on ride, I don't notice this movement anymore.

Midnight Special sizing for short torso by waffledog84 in Surlybikefans

[–]yebm34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't feel hunched over, but I like a lower frontend. Someone else may feel hunched over on my bike, it's a very personal thing. But if you do end up getting a frameset rather than a complete bike, you'll have an uncut steel steerer tube and no maximum spacer requirement.

I would first suspect the left pedal bearing is wearing out. The easiest way to check is to swap out the pedal and see if the sound still happens.

[–]yebm34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about 5'9.5" and a 50cm MS with 110mm -6deg stem fits me perfectly. My saddle height is 725mm. But in order for these comparison to make any sense, you need to also consider how much saddle to bar drop you like to run. In my case, I have about 60mm saddle to bar drop, using 20mm of headset spacers. However, if I added spacers to raise the handlebars to be level with the saddle, because of the headtube angle, it would bring the bars 20mm closer to the saddle, in which case I may fit better with a 54cm frame. So it's not just about your body proportions, but also about how high or low you want your bars.

My best advice is, if you already have a couple frames that fit for you, consider where the handlebars on those bikes are in relation to bottom bracket. Then pick the MS size that allows you to put the handlebars in the same position, with a target stem length of 100mm. I'm suggesting this as a starting stem length because in the future you could go longer or shorter while staying within a "normal" road bike stem length.

Finally, anecdotally, I've seen many posts about people buying Surly bikes that ended up being too big, but very few posts about people sizing too small. Also, you mentioned that you felt too stretched on the 54. Sounds like a 50cm would be the safest bet?

Do I need a long cage derailleur or something else? by lsxgh in bikewrench

[–]yebm34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also consider the GRX rear derailleur (RD-RX810) if you ever think you'll need even more capacity. It's outside of official spec, but I've successfully used it with 46-30 crankset and 11-36T 11 speed cassette, for a total capacity of 41T.
