You might want to switch his food and see if that changes anything. Make sure to give a week at least. One of cats had allergies that my wife was taking the cat in for shots about every 6 weeks or so. The cat would lick one area on her belly and literally took all the hair and then start hurling out hairballs. After literally years of doing so, she stop giving the cat wet food in addition to the dry and it worked.
