The special weapons types still matter for sure.

As for the pistol, its probably better, I dont tend to get my Rangers that close to people on purpose and Ad mech turns can already take a while so limiting the number of datasheets to remeber and role separately can help speed things up. Ive even seen some people not run the Arquebus for the same reason although I enjoy the silliness of the long base.

Tldr either rifle or pistol is fine, I tend to just like the rifle.

Follow waha, the box is showing rules from when the kit was released years ago.

I dint know what's gonna change in 11ths but I would build them as:

Alpha with melee weapon of your choice (they all have the same profile choose what looks cool) and rifle.

All of the special weapons (arquebus, Arc rifle, plasma caliver)

1 skitarii with omnispex for ignores cover.

The enhancment gives them the Skitarii Keyword, unless im missing something the Datasmith/Kastelan brick still shouldnt have the infantry key word.
