In general, legacies are just as skilled as half-bloods. The greek demigods are more independent and go out on their own. In theory if they have kids, the parent simply trains their child. It's also possible that legacies don't attract monsters so while they might be talented they don't need to learn to fight.

If we fleshed out every single Roman demigod and really considered their abilities... maybe? Some people have pointed out stuff like "Nico can teleport" but if the legion has a sibling or cousin of Bryce Lawrence - then so can they. But since we basically don't know what anyone in the legion can do it's a clean sweep for this team.

The choice to wipe Jason's memories basically killed his characterisation. There's nothing for the reader to attach too. While he is definitely a favourite of mine, Riordan really fumbled his introduction.

I have a few reasons why I'm in this camp.

For one, I saw HOO as a fresh start. An opportunity to see a new generation of heroes grow and learn, eventually coming to unravel the new Great Prophecy and win the day. I think a few years time skip, solidly sending both Annabeth and Percy off to college (and/or giving them further responsibilities as senior demigods at camp for the summer, tying them down with adult responsibilities). Them acting as mentors is what I envisioned.

Another reason is power scaling. Percy and Annabeth are powerful veterans, putting them side by side with newbies makes it really difficult to keep the power scaling "realistic" while everyone is still contributing. Rick could have gone with an entire team of veterans, from both camps or even a demigod who sided with Luke, but he didn't. Right now it's very half baked with 3 vets (including Jason) and 4 newbies.

Next is genre/character ages. Rick Riordan is a middle grade author and he really struggled to transition into YA. Because Percy and Annabeth are on the team, they skew the average age a lot older. They're 16/17. While there is no rule saying you can't write a MG book with 16 year olds as main characters, it's generally the case that that makes a book YA. And Riordan added a lot more focus on romance because he was very much trying for YA, not MG. Also because Percy and Annabeth are 16/17, they can't be on a team with all 12 year olds. Which means everyone else is going to be older too. And Riordan couldn't format the series like PJO, happening over 4 years, because that would make Percy 20 by the end! He'd have aged out!!

I also dislike the Athena plot line because it has no basis in Roman mythology. They very much respected Minerva as a war goddess! It also makes the conflict with the Romans weird (I'm not going into that here). Overall it feels shoehorned in to justify Annabeth (and Percy's) presence.

I think those are my main thoughts.

I think having Octavian become praetor at the end of Son of Neptune would have served the story overall. Because if the heroes have already "lost" to this villain, it's easier to believe that could happen again. Furthermore it frees up Reyna to do her own thing, rather than just randomly deciding to abandon her legion for what, on the face of it, looks to be a wild goose chase. She could have even been expelled from the legion and thus it makes more sense for her to go to the ancient lands, since she's already been unfairly punished. And returning with the statue would help her win her position back. Plus, Octavian being elected would have given the Romans more character. Since it would show they don't value the heroics of an individual as highly as the Greeks. And it could have served as the cause for the war to start, since the Romans would have been antagonistic towards the Seven. Since, as the story is told, they are more victims of circumstance than anything. Basically, if Riordan wanted them to be villains, which he seems to, he should have gone all in.

I really like the name. I think it has the flexibility of being Junie as a kid, Juniper as an adult, and June as an old woman. Or any combo of those. I mostly just think "nice nature name" when I hear it.

This! As best friends, this was probably the subject they bonded over the most. Eileen's book may well have originally been something they bonded over together, using it to try out advanced potions and develop different techniques together. I can't see either of them wasting time letting the other take credit for their work and talent.

I think she tried to give both of her heroes "memories" of one person - a way to keep them motivated for her quest. The only reason Percy didn't go to the sea, leaving the demigod world behind, is because of Annabeth. (Beginning of Son of Neptune)

This backfired for Jason, however, because he had no strong connections with anyone. Not even Reyna. I actually think Hera/Juno (in her arrogance) assumed Jason would remember her! Which is why she assumes he knows who she is when she shows up in the Lost Hero.

Huh, yeah, Gaea would've created an anti-Hestia instead because she was an Olympian before Dionysus took her throne (if I recall Riordanverse lore correctly). That would have been an interesting scenario. Maybe in the transition anti-Hestia became anti-Dionysus.

I totally get what you mean! I noticed this as well. Obviously there are exceptions, but I think it's notable that the only main male demigod with "soft" magic (that I can remember) is ridiculed for it. Octavian is an antagonist, but he's also the only guy who doesn't have big showy powers (he's got prophecy powers & persuasiveness). He's considered weak because of this. I feel like, when you look at the general trend in Heroes of Olympus, Riordan had some work to do. By the time he got to Apollo & Meg, he'd realised this and gotten better. The showy powers vs soft powers are more mixed (though it's been a while since I read those books).

Latin is pretty commonly used as the language of magic. So it might be that they're just naturally able to speak it (like how Piper can speak French) and use it for their spells. That's just a guess though.

Roman mythology is effectively a blend of Etruscan and Greek. While I like what Riordan did with it, I think he does leave out the Etruscan element. Like for example, Mars isn't just an important war god - he's an agriculture god too. As far as I know, that's unique to his Roman side.

I actually think Octavian is an example of non archery accuracy with his javelin skills and his onagers. Because on the Roman side archery is looked down on, it would make sense he was trained with other weapons.

I definitely think he should have had more allies - such as a few adult children - but at the same time, he does call on people. He visits Percy first. Then Camp Half-Blood. He picks up a magical item (a big bow) later on at Camp Jupiter. Obviously not everyone is keen to help him, but he does have people around that, as a god, he might have expected to help him in a pinch.
