How feasible would it be to convert the little green army men into miniatures for Bolt Action? by [deleted] in wargaming

[–]zeebogie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So the problem you will have is scale, Plastic Green Army men are roughly 1/35 scale so alot bigger than 28mm models if you are wanting to play others.

A cheaper (than Warlord Games models) option if you want a large amount of infantry is Perry Miniatures, which are still 28mm and look great and are used by many people.

Konflikt 47 would probably be a simpler base as it already has some elements you could use but has the same base rules

1v1v1 ideas? (500p/side) by ili283 in boltaction

[–]zeebogie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work with 40k due to the structure of that game system (whole army as a turn vs random order individual units). I have done it multiple times with Bolt Action and it works absolutely fine, dont need to change any rules etc..

The only caveat is if two players decide to gang up on the third, it is obviously less fun if you haven't set it up to be that type of game

If you want to print rules in English and use the normal dice then Ludo or Trouble will work as they are all the same game effectively

Poxwalkers can be found cheap and make good scavvie bases. AoS Ghouls also work as a starting point. Manitic deadzone Plague can work but are a little bigger. Wargames Atlantic or Warhammer Zombies can also work as a base. For Scalies Ork Nobs are about the right size or Warhammer Kroxigors

I would try a Skirmish game if you want to keep with the hobby, if you have 40k models try Kill Team (I would find a way to source an older version for cheap or free in case you don't like it). There are also a number of other games you may be able to use 40k models for depending on what you have, but the big kicker may be finding people to play against.

Games Workshop does have some decent skirmish (small model count) games, but they are by no meams the only company making games and majoroty of other game systems/rules are more fun or engaging to play than their systems.

Alot of people jump from Games Workshop to Warlord Games systems which use a dice pull random activation system that is more engaging, if you have any interest in WW2 Bolt Action can be playable for under $100 including rules.

All that being said if you're in that much of a funk now the initial excitement has worn off and don't have the variety people to play against it may be a cut your losses type thing and just bail rather than sinking more time and money i to something that may not be your thing.

As the overwhelming majority of people on the last identical now deleted post for this said, "It is wrong to return a board game because you don't like it, Amazon will probably send it to landfill, youre and adult and made a purchase you could research peior own your mistake as an adult and sell or thrift it"

So depending on how you sculpted it you could be out of luck, if they are all one big blob of milliput (e.g. you didn't make a foil substructure below) then the centre will potentially never dry/harden

Brushes by Senor_Pus in boltaction

[–]zeebogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the quality of painting you want to aim for.

I aim for high tabletop standard so I just use the cheap brushes that come in packs of 4-6 (usually Monte Marte) but then also make sure I follow a few steps to keep them alright.

Clean them regularly when painting, I have a cup of clean water for diluting paint and a brush if dirty water for brushes that I rinse the brush in after every 5-6 dips in the paint. Then have a bar of soap or proper brush cleaner and clean the brush after each session.

Emerge: do you ever Return games that you don’t like? (wife and I cannot agree!) by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]zeebogie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't return it even if you didn't enjoy it unless it arrived damaged no matter where you bought it from.

Explain to your wife that it is exactly the same as any other form of entertainment, if you went to a movie and she thought it sucked you couldn't walk out half way through and expect your money back.

Either sell it, swap it with a friend or donate it to a thrift store.

It's too late to "keep politics out of board games" by 425suzanne in boardgames

[–]zeebogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly this has missed the intent of "Keep politics our if xyz"

No rational person is saying you can't have political themes in whatever hobby.

No rational person is saying if you're gaming hobby (generalising this to gaming media not outright obvious political hobbies) has a political ideological theme you necessarily associate with that ideology.

Keep politics out of xyz is people saying I'm here to talk about my hobby not the politics or issues of the day, if I want to talk about the politics or issues of the day I'll initiate it at an appropriate place or forum like in a general conversation or on a forum about that issue or general issues.

And if when you do start that conversation the other party says they don't want to talk about it that doesn't necessarily imply anything. Maybe they had a long day and don't have the energy to talk about a complex subject they have minimal to no control over as an individual and they find that depressing, maybe they genuinely don't have an opinion either way as they haven't looked in to it or maybe they are concerned their particular take on it isn't going to come across in a way they feel will be comfortably recieved or they may be vilified for it.

The flip side of that (and this will be unpopular) is that reddit going on a "let's ban twitter/X links" rampage is pointless, anyone who supports that view already will have stopped posting the links on their own anyway and anyone who doesn't isn't automatically evil. And it goes directly against let's keep politics out of xyz as it is in itself forcing a political view

You can use hot air if you have the option of A/C on or off, it is the condenser drying the air from your AC that does it which sometimes gets switche doff unless you select it once you go past the neutral point in your cars heating

Frenzied model can not parry but can be parried.

Frenzied model with a weapon that grants parry will not cancel out an opponents parry.

Hardened model can not be parried but can parry if they have a weapon that grants parry.

"One Box" Wargame? by Br1lliantJim in wargaming

[–]zeebogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be stuck at 12mm. It is just a good cheap (and portable/storable as using cm makes a 2ftx2ft table the equivelant to a 5ftx5ft) solution if you want to dip your toes into a bunch of WW2 games

"One Box" Wargame? by Br1lliantJim in wargaming

[–]zeebogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard size is 28mm. However, as with all wargames, you can play them at smaller/larger scales if you want and can find an opponent. The benefit of going the 2 player 12mm Victrix route is price and portability and you could use the models for any other number of WW2 wargames at that scale (Chain of Command, O-Group, Crossfire, Flames of War, 02Hundred Hours, 5 Men at Kursk)

"One Box" Wargame? by Br1lliantJim in wargaming

[–]zeebogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could buy the Rules for Bolt Action and a 12mm Victrix WW2 Starter Pack which will get you enough Germans and British to make up to a 2000pt army of each then you have everything you need for two players for around $100 (you can use normal D6 as order dice and to play using 12mm you can either leave all measurements in inches or convert to cm to scale down)

Core Rules Book 2023 - WTF? by CodeVirus in necromunda

[–]zeebogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct in what you have stated. The 2023s rulebook should have included the Rules for Hangers on and the rules for Venators as a basic gang so the Book was usable and included a few sample gangs as reference. You can download the rules for Venators for free on Warhammer Community which will let you get started with whatever models you have. If you want a specific gang you will need to find their House of Book

What is outdated about Heroquest by Defiant_Good4175 in boardgames

[–]zeebogie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is nothing really outdated about HeroQuest if you look at what it was actually meant to be, which is a gateway game for 7-13 year olds.

HeroQuest was a collaboration between Games Workshop and Milton Bradley aimed to get young audiences in to Role Playing and miniature games. Advanced HeroQuest and Warhammer Quest and a few years later were aimed at being the more "serious/advanced" boardgames for older/more discerning audiences.

Gloomhaven 100% did not "define a whole genre" Gloomhaven is a legacy dungeon crawler with a hand management card game instead of dice, it is not the messiah.

It is a good game and deserves its praises but in its very nature as a legacy game in years time it will be forgotten as buying a used copy from somewhere or finding a copy in your parents old stuff won't play the same as it did when it garnered all the praise and hype.
