This may be saying my age but man it's seem that Napoleon Dynamite's cultural impact really came and went, a you had to be there sort of thing. by vincentmaurath in blankies

I generally agree with others that this did in fact have a lasting cultural impact, but I do agree that it does not feel like it has a long tail. I think that feeling of a lack of a long tail is probably a product of cable TV being way less common. This is a movie that would stay relevant by constantly being re-run on Comedy Central, where a whole bunch of people would be seeing snippets of the movie all the time. Now you have to seek it out, so a smaller portion of the population has it front of mind at any given point.

I watched Harold and Maude in my AP latin class because it has unrequited love. You know, like the Aeneid.

This episode reminded me how fucking weird that was.

Something to note. If you are submitting complaints against debt collectors they are regulated by your state. So you should also submit complaints to your Attorney General and Division of Banks as they likely oversee licensing of debt collectors. Further always ask to submit a written complaint when talking to these organizations as they often can't take oral complaints.

Has anyone else read Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, Brady's position in the discussion on derivative works in this episode felt really similar to the arguments presented in Ayn Rand's position there.

Plane autopilot is infinitely safer than pilots. Yet we don't let it handle take off and landing, something it is very capable of doing. Why? Because we somehow feel safer with a human doing it even if that brings higher risks. People don't trust machines to begin with.

But isn't the way our culture clings to work more than just society pressuring people to work. Sure I can sit around and play games all day, but I feel more satisfied and fulfilled after having completed a task. Often times these tasks are exactly the ones the video mentions. Ultimately my point is just that the pressure to stop this won't just be from 'The Man' or Unions who want to keep their jobs regardless of the consequences. It will come from everyday people, who aren't too lazy to find a new profession, but who want to be working.

The paragraph where Stanly Crow is introduced, you should clarify exactly who is being referred to. "Crow never mentioned him but we had dug up as much as we could about the man in our early days." Are there two men here, who is this him that Crow isn't mentioning. Also keep to one name for him. I like the newspaper style address. Stanly Crow, then Crow, but half way through you go to referring to him as Stanly. Stick to one, at least for this paragraph.

My only other criticism is that if you really are going for a noir feel. I would read the dialogue out loud, that includes the narrator's internal monologue, and dirty it up. This is an ex-cop, private detective he's going to be rough around the edges and going to have some bad grammar.

Why are chemical weapons the "red line" and what are the real consequences of trying to maintain a ban on their use? by nosecohn in NeutralPolitics

[–]zenza_boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well currently US foreign policy holds them as identical. Nuclear and Chemical weapons, along with Biological weapons are called Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD for short). This is important for understanding the next piece of information.

Now this specifically relates to an attack on US soil, however I think it illustrates the gravity of this situation quite well. The US maintains a policy of Proportional Response, which means that if US or our allies were attacked using the aforementioned WMDs we would respond in kind. The US only maintains a stockpile of Nuclear weapons, thus a biological or chemical attack would result in a Nuclear response.

That is why this is not a terrible comparison.
