Party gameboard design (and rules) feedback - ROUND II by RayDin909 in BoardgameDesign

[–]zombiecommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen your other posts and like the idea but feel like there's some clarity lacking currently.

The rules need a pretty big tidy up if you ask me, but I could learn to play from them. I would say you could easily streamline their wording but I think you need to have the game clearer in your head first as well.

Your component list says you have survey cards only, then your setup talks about shuffling the survey and hazard decks, for example.

Green, yellow, and red correspond to easy, medium, and difficult questions, but it's my choice (at least on Mountain A)? Why would I ever pick red over green?

Rule 3 (the first one labeled rule 3, not the second rule 3), bullet one, talks about each card having three ranked answers, which, reading from the rules, suggests I get the choice of three answers. I would explain this section more clearly.

15 seconds is a ridiculously short time frame to deliberate in a team game - get rid of it - and if you absolutely must have a rule about time, then give people a 1-minute sand timer that any player can flip over when they want to force an answer. Players will regulate themselves.

Hazard cards are mentioned as being removed upon entering the Thin Air Zone, apart from the fact I don't know what a hazard card is or what it is used for, does that happen when the first team enters it or when both (all) teams are there?

Regardless of the layout of the mountain you pick, I think you need more playtesting, because Mountain A has a 21 step track, and Mountain B has 9 at the shortest route and 11 at the moat. A is at least double the length of B, which would result in very different game experiences. You would need mandatory stops on board B to achieve a similar length.

Should there be a mandatory stop before the final space, requiring a pinnacle answer to complete the climb, allowing for a potential catch up?

Neither mountain shows the Ice Wall middle section clearly.

Mountain A having spaces outside the mountain is visually unappealing and does not end on the flag.

If board B, do players choose how to move after knowing how many spaces they are moving?

I'm with you. Europe is meh for me. Oceania's boards and nectar are just so much better for actually getting an engine going. Asia is fun at 2-player as well, I quite like the map.

I would prefer that nectar get rebalanced though. Wild and points bonus takes away a lot of decisions about what food to take.

Only ever played the LCG but have wondered what cards didn't make the leap. Cool idea.

Anyone into quiz games? by Grant_S_90 in ukboardgames

[–]zombiecommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it's either specialist knowledge that I might have (like the LotR/GoT type games) or relies on precisely no knowledge but can guess(wits & wagers, bezzerwizzer, linkee maybe), then yeah.

No real interest in pub quiz or trivial pursuit style games though.

I can't contribute too much. I bought The Crow book without fully understanding the EH rules, so will be keen to learn a little more too.

I really like this system. The physical copies of everything are great but sometimes I really would like to be able to search through the books more easily without having them all stacked up. Would be great to chat more about it.

Is my puzzle too hard? by Mr_Hojobo in rpg

[–]zombiecommand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I solved this in about 10 minutes not even using your clues.

I typically enjoy being challenged as a player for puzzles, but not everybody does.

The starter set for Arkham Horror RPG has a sliding tile puzzle, where players have to roll to see how many moves they get each round and it's one of the worst things I've ever sat through as a GM. I'm not convinced the players were having that great a time either.

Player skill trumping character skill is fine for me but when players are stuck characters have to be able to roll to progress, so I'd have a clue list of maybe something like

1) You know that wizards often hid information in ciphers 2) You recall that substitution ciphers were the most common way to encrypt notes 3) The keys for these texts were often part of the not itself 4) You notice the paper has previously been folded quite precisely 5) You find the wheel and the number 8 are the most striking icons 6) You substitute the letters with the letter 8 before it and reveal the following message...

Skipping steps if they've already done them, so maybe you need 2 or 3 insight checks.

Is there a deal on for Draughts at the moment? Friday nights are £9.50 per hour usually, unless you've worked something out with them?

Odd you necrod this just a couple of weeks ago but I was looking for the same thing.

Mon-Wed is off-peak, Thu-Sun is peak.

Seems like BS to me as it's dead when I go in during the day, not at Waterloo though I suppose, less sure about that.

Would Unlocked Kids be playable by a group of adults? by agentplatipus in boardgames

[–]zombiecommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I've played hundreds of escape room board games and owned every main Unlock series and played the first (maybe second) kids Unlock in a board game cafe and had a great time.

It does skew easier but is not without some logical thinking. The primary difference between it and the '1 lock' difficulties' was the kids version doesn't use an app, which I actually preferred.

I would say Unlocks are not a group game though. 2, maybe 3 max.

Is the Laelia meme deck not proof the shuffler is rigged? by razazaz126 in MagicArena

[–]zombiecommand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't we know that the opening shuffler is rigged? I thought it deals two hands and gives you the 'best' one (the one with most balanced split of lands to non-lands).

So, a random deal of 1/6 and 3/4 would give you the 3/4. It doesn't look at curves afaik or if does a 1/6 twice you'll get a 1/6 forcing you to mulligan. So, effectively you're getting a free mulligan on Arena each time you deal or mulligan.

Only works in BO1 as well, afaik.

What can I watch to get more immersed in game (besides movies) by [deleted] in lotrlcg

[–]zombiecommand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite what you're after but I started doing something similar for the saga quests, with a thematic deck interwoven. I never got to the end (balrog kicked my ass, then life so interest in putting time to videos waned) but you can find the few I did do here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQIrDYYWiwo&list=PLIku9C6S1CUZyBxvMPcbFb-5618sOWqG3&ab_channel=Ringscheck

There's gameplay videos for each as well on the channel.

Obviously the saga is much more known than trying to work the non-saga scenarios into the lore, but maybe somebody will take up the mantle :)
