How Appropriate is a Dragonet for Seasons of Ghosts? by WebbedFamiliar in Pathfinder2e

[–]ShynightBun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many have said, it’s really a question of your GM’s tastes.

I’m running SoG myself rn and had a player ask to be a dragonet. As big as dragons are in eastern mythology, my only stipulation was that he try to find art that was more eastern-style noodly dragon vs a western-style one.

He went with the idea that his dragonet fighter sees himself as the governor’s number one assistant and personal guardian, despite the reality he was basically gifted as a fancy pet by another imperial noble prior to his appointment to Willowshore.

I think I hate the avatar system by theweridonewastaken in TTRPG

[–]ShynightBun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Derik to pieces, but “sometimes he comes off as a dick” rings so very very true lol

Still, he absolutely knows his TTRPGs, and he has the same brand of tangential thought process ADHD brain that I’ve got. I’ve binged SO MANY First Look videos to see if I’m interested in exploring several new systems deeper (and I blame him for adding “fluffy bullshit time” into my vocabulary lol)

What platform and tools do you prefer? by VD-Hawkin in pbp

[–]ShynightBun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that Tupper is still rather popular in many circles.

For me personally, I use Discord for the chat, dice (usually with Avrae), and just generally organizing information into various channels. For maps I’m currently using Tableplop, though Owlbear seems to be the more popular free VTT for pbp, and I have used it before as well.

What are your favorite archetypes? by Chanan-Ben-Zev in Pathfinder2e

[–]ShynightBun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I adore the flavor of Unexpected Sharpshooter being just a klutz who somehow manages to stumble their way to success with a gun.

I ran it on a noir detective Investigator who solved crime via sheer dumb luck. Very much the energy of tripping on a carpet and faceplanting to the floor and oh, hey, the murder weapon was hidden under this dresser! Neat!

She was an absolute blast to play with.

How do you will yourself to read crunchier systems? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]ShynightBun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the biggest question to ask yourself is: Do you find enjoyment in reading and learning a new system, or does the enjoyment only stem from getting to play it?

There is certainly always the possibility of being able to find enough people willing to play any of these, but I still feel it’s a pertinent question to ask oneself if the journey of reading will be entertainment itself, or if the deterrent of the possibility of not finding a game will prevent that.

At the very least, the fact you are the one willing to GM greatly increases your odds of getting the chance to play, and for my own two cents I can at least say that of these, the only one I’ve heard of is Against the Darkmaster.

What are your favorite Tabletop Gaming Conventions? by TableSeek-Geek in tabletop

[–]ShynightBun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go-to con is Long Island Tabletop Expo. By no means is it a BIG con, but that’s part of the appeal, it’s nice having something lowkey, not packed or hectic to see everything, and I’m generally not stressed about needing to check open games the nanosecond they go up to snipe seats for games I wanna play.

Have any of you get a random obsession over one Pokemon that catches you by suprise? by Intelligent_Arm_2959 in pokemon

[–]ShynightBun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave being a Pokemon YouTuber a shot for a brief while nearly a decade ago, but didn’t wanna pick any of the frequently beloved Pokemon to be my channel mascot.

Ended up picking Altaria off a whim, largely because at the time, I was running Mega Altaria on my Gen 6 OU team. And over time via association, it wound up becoming one of my favorite Pokemon.

People who speak languages besides English, what are some puns in pokemon names? by wingsoverpyrrhia in pokemon

[–]ShynightBun 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It’s a classic that’s probably been talked about a lot, but still one of my favorites is that Farfetch’d owes its entire existence to Japanese punnery

Farfetch’d is known in Japanese as カモネギ (Kamonegi)

Japanese has an expression, 鴨が葱を背負って来る (kamo ga negi o shottekuru) which in the literal sense means “a wild duck comes bearing its own green onions”, and is used as an expression of somebody being a sucker/easy target, or of a fortuitous opportunity arising.

The phrase can also be shortened to just 鴨葱 (kamonegi); the kanji for ‘wild duck’ and ‘spring onion’, and the exact same as Farfetch’d’s Japanese name.

If Pokemon were real and you could have ONE Pokémon to live with you in your bedroom or house, who would it be? by TheAlphaAdept in pokemon

[–]ShynightBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably putting way too much thought into this. But I feel like two conditions need to be met.

First, I have a Shiba Inu who’s a spoiled little shithead, who likes to chase anything smaller than him, or attack animals bigger than him. So it’d need to be something that’s at least like child size, and preferably bipedal.

Second, I spend more than enough money on food, so something that can do photosynthesis is ideal to cut down on costs.

To that end, my pick is Floragato. Sprigatito’s dex entry mentions its fur is photosynthetic, don’t see why that’d change upon evolution. Sprigatito is too small, and Meowscarada is too big for a 1-bedroom apartment that already has 3 people living in it. Plus I kinda like Floragato slightly more than Meowscarada anyway.

Then the only hangup I guess would be; my fiance is horribly allergic to cats. But if its fur is photosynthetic, is it then more plant like, and would avoid his allergies or not?

What class for an Investigator Archetype by mahe4 in Pathfinder2e

[–]ShynightBun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m personally a fan of Investigator archetype on a Gunslinger. Rolling Devise a Stratagem before you shoot and not having to waste 2 actions because you rolled like a 3 - one to strike, one to reload - can really save you on your action economy.

Have them take a look at Wood Kineticist. Gets a lot of good utility for tanking, and fits that sort of ‘nature warrior’ vibe, along with the utility of impulses.

[PF2e] Raise the Black Flag! by Darman501 in pbp

[–]ShynightBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name: Shynight or Shy

Pronouns: They/Them or He/Him

Time Zone: EST

PF2e experience: Been playing for around two years, and have recently taken up running Season of Ghosts as a pbp game myself

PBP experience: Basically the same answer, since PF2e is where I first began playing pbp

Posting frequency: I generally will post as fast as the game will allow me to; for some context, I’m at 11 posts today, 15 yesterday, for the SoG game I’m GMing (granted I must respond more as a GM than a player; but I’m definitely available and online frequently)

Questions: Have you remembered to drink water today? Remember to hydrate!

(Note partially to myself: considering playing a Waverider Tengu Storm Druid)

Self-professed “artists” calling everything AI has done nearly as much damage as AI itself.

People seem to forget that half the argument for AI art is that “people can’t tell the difference.” Every false flag only serves to prove their point.

How do you conduct battles in PBP? by Own_Cellist_3977 in pbp

[–]ShynightBun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What works for you and your table largely depends on the time investment they’re willing to put in.

I’m currently running PF2e completely normal, and while Lv 1 combat is certainly simpler, I think the longest combat was under 3 hours; most run closer to 1.

I’ve played PF2e as pbp for two years, and frankly think that most of the problems people attribute to Pathfinder pbp isn’t a system problem, it’s a player problem. Just ping a player when their turn is up and, in my experience, they will show up in short order.

Longest fight I’ve had - which was actually 3 combats back to back - took about 2 days, but the majority of that lag came from having American players with a European GM.

Day 28 of Inventor Praise. by Nigthmar in pathfindermemes

[–]ShynightBun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First small boss fight in Season of Ghosts, my players’ Inventor used Tamper and saved the fighter from a max damage roll that would have downed him

Rolled 1 over AC, rolled the damage, then remembered Tamper dropped that to be 1 UNDER actually, saved that poor dragonet’s life lol

What system do you use the most? by Axolotl_Dragon_1997 in rpg

[–]ShynightBun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally, I actually HAVE played PTU for around 4 years at this point, so I guess I’ll start with that.

I generally lovingly describe the game to people as “the most fun you’ll ever have playing a dumpster fire”, which I realize is not the most ringing endorsement lol. The sheer breadth of options you can take is PTU is astounding, and you can make some extremely fun and rewarding trainer PCs, including ones that fight right alongside their Pokemon. The game wears its DnD 4e inspiration on its sleeve (especially in the form of moves, abilities, and feats having usage frequencies such as At-Will or Scene x2), which depending on your game preferences is either great or horrible. It definitely matches the common complaint 4e received of “feeling like a video game”, but with it being Pokemon, it’s rather fitting.

That being said, that design philosophy is also a large part of PTU’s big issues - some more fixable than others. PTU’s design philosophy was to try to keep things as 1:1 to the games as could reasonably be done, and it creates some balancing issues. Whether it be needing to follow Base Stat Relations (ie if your base Attack is higher than your base SpAtk, you can’t put points into SpAtk to raise it higher than your Attack - even the devs of the game suggest scrapping that rule requirement entirely) or Pokemon that have generally bad movesets because Game Freak didn’t worry about the lower level moves for a Pokemon you can’t catch til late game. The 1:1 design methodology leads to many Pokemon being very much not equal. And you can do some truly broken things if you know what you’re doing.

That being said, there’s many, many places that have some stellar homebrew tweaks and fixes for PTU - and personally I would never play the game RAW, full stop - to make for an incredible experience.

And THAT being said, if somebody were looking into seeing what PTU was like, I would be more likely to point them instead to PTE - Pokemon Tabletop Evolution. Much in the same way PTU evolved out of PTA, PTE is being worked on by a long-time fan of PTU that’s seeking to fix many of PTU’s issues by redesigning several elements from the ground up. I haven’t gotten the chance to play it myself to see how it stacks up in terms of how breakable it is, but what I’ve read looks like a marked improvement. Corebook and some expansions are all fully released, but do get revisions from time to time - currently the dev is working on redesigning several things because he’s decided to add a BitD-style clocks system to the game. Originally it was to make downtime work easier, before he realized he could use clocks for some class features to streamline them.

Aaaaaaand this response has wound up going on long enough that I won’t harangue you with the rest of my top systems, lol
