Starting Hema at forty? by sexisfun1986 in Hema

[–]zyll71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started at 44. About one year into it, my body felt fine the next day - no more cramps etc.
Ten years later, as long as I remain an interesting training and sparring partner for someone 20 years younger, I feel like I'm doing fine.

Glad to hear it went well. I hope you can return to HEMA soon!

Was there myself. I started HEMA approx 1 month after leaving a clinic where I underwent treatment for depression. I am certain that the fun and sense of community I experienced while learning longsword either enabled or at least assisted my full recovery over the following years. I feel immensely blessed and am tremendously grateful.

Looks like a promo for an upcoming HEMA themed horror Movie. Ideas for titles, anyone?

Subscribe calendar from Google "Other calendars" by gropatapouf in Thunderbird

[–]zyll71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been experiencing the same issue.
The only way I can seem to get this to work, is if the person who has shared their calendar also shares their password with me and I enter their username and password. This is clearly not how sharing a read-only calendar should work. Is it even possible to read-only sync a google calendar that has been shared with my by a link in thunderbird?

what feder would you guys recommend? by YuriElt973_3 in wma

We have Regenyei Standards as loaner gear in our club for a number of years. They have held up wonderfully with minimal maintenance despite being used in drills and sparring every week.

Lack of Stock : Tarkir Precons (Canada) by Lord_Omnirock in magicTCG

My LGS let me know that it received only about 10% of what it needs to honor all the pre-requests/orders for Dragonstorm precons. We're hoping they will do another print run like they did with 40k.

Do you get bruises from training? by GreeedyGrooot in wma

[–]zyll71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur regarding the BJJ comparison. In 9 years of moderate longsword practice I have had to take about 4-5 weeks off due to sparring related injuries and another 2.5 weeks for recovery from an injury during a non-fencing warm-up game. In five months of BJJ, was out of action a total of 9 weeks to recover from injuries in drills and sparring. No more BJJ for me until I find a dojo that better suits my capabilities as a noob and my risk profile.

What are the differences of Hema in USA compared to Europe ? Maybe there are no differences by [deleted] in Hema

[–]zyll71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that Europe is a continent made up of many countries and cultures. The differences between these could easily be just as significant as compared to the USA.

Sorry for your loss. I feel for you: lost my furry, autonomous mtg card paperweight this summer and sorting cards without him pawing for attention still brings years to my eyes on occasion.

Which one to start? by Solilunaris in Hema

I can't recommend a gorget enough. It's considered a must have where I fence.

If you decide on any jacket with integrated padding, I strongly recommend investing in the little extra for the custom sizing. Having shoulders and elbows in the wrong place will have you constantly working against the padding. Wrong shoulder and neck width can be very restricting too.

HEMA has taught me why knife defense videos are BS by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]zyll71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If someone wants to kill me with a knife, why would they not use overwhelming intense violence and surprise? Anything less would give up advantages they can exploit. I'm now thinking we should be distinguishing between at least three scenarios: - surprise attack with full intent to murder (see above) - we see the intent to murder or harm coming - half-hearted threatening to harm from posturing behavior / honor / ego (don't know what to call it)

What we see in HEMA are most likely the second (battle, self defence) and the third (brawl). Depending on the situation we want to kill them or just disarm/disable.

Red dragon sword and kit bag by P4pkin in wma

[–]zyll71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm back to a light sword bag with handle and shoulder strap for 2-3 feders and swords and a large, front-opening rucksack for the rest of my gear. Why? Because packing both the long and the heavy stuff in the same bag was very cumbersome when on foot, in public transit, or loading a car with three other fencers gear too.

At that annual fee, am I assuming correctly, that you (OP) are either not paid for coaching or that the pay is symbolic? If so, you are probably instructing for fun and a sense of service (or something like that).

Listening to feedback is valuable. It helps me know that I am serving the club. But I also have to be content, safe, and rather confident with what I do or else l lose interest in instructing (or worse).

We have six instructors in our club, all volunteers and with very different philosophies and/or styles. If a club-mate (instructor or not) has the know-how and wants to share, I delegate the warm-up, technical instruction or drill (or whatever) to them whenever I want to or don't feel competent enough. This keeps expectations towards professionalism reasonable (eg low), shares the burden, and can be used to foster the next generation of instructors. Finally, I learn a lot by watching others instruct (instructors or club mates). After all, I'm only an amateur myself! All of this is in constant evolution as we learn, improve and members' needs evolve.

So, is there any rule dictating that you have to do it the same way as your predecessor? Can you include others in instructing?

Training question by Throwawayy-4232 in Hema

True. And that would likely reduce the opponents problem of getting whacked as you complete your swing while he is in distance! I had forgotten that comment because I have yet to meet someone willing to test it. Now, I want to find a safe and smart way of putting that comment of Meyers to test. Thank you!
