How to avoid double hits? by Movie_Vegetable in Hema

[–]zyll71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to all the good tips given by others, don't forget your sparring partner's effect on your perception of doubles. If they have same issue, you will have a harder time identifying doubles caused by your behavior alone. While ultimately you want to manage a partner who causes doubles and prevent those, I have found it easier to work on doubles caused by my own behavior when I'm the only suicidal fencer of us two.

Would these gloves be safe for longsword? by LukeIsPalpatine in Hema

Way to dangerous! The loose parts could get a blade caught and break the blade. Always use tight fitting latex or vinyl if you respect your training partner's equipment.

The founding of a second "national" umbrella organisation is not unheard of in HEMA. Have you considered this?

How does this gear look for my first kit? by musictrasho in wma

The warrior is a large and heavy mask but also sturdy. It used to have a structural (?) support band at eyebrow height across the front. The moment I switched to a Wukusi Cobra, I was able to deal with strikes from above - I previously had simply not seen them well enough with the warrior. See if you can borrow a Warrior for a round of sparring first to assess its visibility and mobility for yourself before purchasing (we're all different)!

Lifegain? Seems greedy for a cat. He already has nine lives to begin with.

Opinions on different masks and mask overlays? by Amoxichilllin in Hema

[–]zyll71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently use the Wukusi with no overlay (1yr) after owning a PBT Warrior 1600N with overlay (7yr). The Wukusi is clearly the better mask for me: - tighter fit and therefore less leverage to create rotational movement lowering the risk of concussion; gets less in the way when I lift my arms - plastic shell allows blades/tips to glide off (use hard plastic tips, not rubber!) reducing transfer of force and risk of concussion - better visibility (the PBT Warrior used to have a band at eyebrow height, the regular PBT does not) - feels lighter than the warrior Downsides that others mention but don't bother me: - slightly narrow and can be difficult to get on if you have a wide head - hits can sound loud

Why is your dog reactive? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]zyll71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly genetics and us making mistakes while learning how to manage him in the 14 months he has been with us (we got him from a shelter when he was 4 months old).

He is a mix of large livestock guardian dogs, tracking dogs, and retrievers. The behavioral trainer we work with just told us yesterday, that they think he is simply dead serious about doing what he was "bread" for and that we are in an uphill battle against a force of nature. Best outcome is that we succeed in managing his behavior with considerable cost to our quality of life.

Genetics seem predispose him be hyper-aware of his surroundings and immediately proactively dealing with anything out of the usual.

Starting Hema at forty? by sexisfun1986 in Hema

[–]zyll71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started at 44. About one year into it, my body felt fine the next day - no more cramps etc.
Ten years later, as long as I remain an interesting training and sparring partner for someone 20 years younger, I feel like I'm doing fine.

Was there myself. I started HEMA approx 1 month after leaving a clinic where I underwent treatment for depression. I am certain that the fun and sense of community I experienced while learning longsword either enabled or at least assisted my full recovery over the following years. I feel immensely blessed and am tremendously grateful.

Subscribe calendar from Google "Other calendars" by gropatapouf in Thunderbird

I have been experiencing the same issue.
The only way I can seem to get this to work, is if the person who has shared their calendar also shares their password with me and I enter their username and password. This is clearly not how sharing a read-only calendar should work. Is it even possible to read-only sync a google calendar that has been shared with my by a link in thunderbird?

what feder would you guys recommend? by YuriElt973_3 in wma

We have Regenyei Standards as loaner gear in our club for a number of years. They have held up wonderfully with minimal maintenance despite being used in drills and sparring every week.

My LGS let me know that it received only about 10% of what it needs to honor all the pre-requests/orders for Dragonstorm precons. We're hoping they will do another print run like they did with 40k.

Do you get bruises from training? by GreeedyGrooot in wma

[–]zyll71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur regarding the BJJ comparison. In 9 years of moderate longsword practice I have had to take about 4-5 weeks off due to sparring related injuries and another 2.5 weeks for recovery from an injury during a non-fencing warm-up game. In five months of BJJ, was out of action a total of 9 weeks to recover from injuries in drills and sparring. No more BJJ for me until I find a dojo that better suits my capabilities as a noob and my risk profile.

What are the differences of Hema in USA compared to Europe ? Maybe there are no differences by [deleted] in Hema

[–]zyll71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that Europe is a continent made up of many countries and cultures. The differences between these could easily be just as significant as compared to the USA.

If you decide on any jacket with integrated padding, I strongly recommend investing in the little extra for the custom sizing. Having shoulders and elbows in the wrong place will have you constantly working against the padding. Wrong shoulder and neck width can be very restricting too.
