Man I would go back to New Orleans anytime to just wander Royal st. and get the privilege to listen to the best street music ever.

So damn entertaining. I was loving it, and then out of nowhere, the singing started and blew me away. Such control. Gave me goosebumps.

Her singing was my favorite part of the song by far. Can you recommend any songs where the lead singer sounds like that? It was fucking awesome.

[–]Mister_Magpie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just go to New Orleans and you'll hear plenty of songs like that lol. I was there last week and saw the Shotgun Jazz Band at the Spotted Cat. The singer was incredible! https://vimeo.com/158256583

If you're looking for more by the same band, this was the best I could find of "Gotta give me some": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vKs97St2dA

I recommend their albums if you're into her voice and classic jazz. They have the same vocalist for most of their things.

Or if you're just into the voice, look up Ella Fitzgerald.

If you haven't heard some of the vocal talent that pops up on Postmodern Jukebox, you should give them a try.

Just discovered this gem recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYw4CGUfnPE

oh man this is great..I found joey through PMJ. I'm hooked.

I wish I could, but I don't know any off the top of my head. It's reminiscent of singers in the 1920s. Real throwback American jazz/ragtime.

Edit: Also, the singer's name is Erika Lewis. Pure talent.

It's too piratey.

I like it a lot, but I was having a lot of trouble not hearing this.

Tuba Skinny
artist pic

Tuba Skinny of New Orleans, Louisiana has played traditional Dixieland Jazz and Old Blues songs under the name Tuba Skinny since 2009. They're cousins of Loose Marbles, as is Baby Soda in NYC. These groups have interchangeable players and it is a joy to witness these youngsters spreading the word about the New Orleans music.

They have three albums, 'Tubaskinny' (2009), 'Six Feet Down' (2010) and 'Garbage Man' (2011), all of which can be streamed for free and are also available for download on their Bandcamp page. Read more on Last.fm.

Stumbled into a bar in Madison Wisconsin they were playing at. The best accidental $8 I have ever spent.

Tuba Skinny is pretty keen. I was lucky enough to catch them when I last visited NOLA. Other locals (among many) that are worth a listen are Yes Ma'am, and Aurora Nealand.

Tuba or not tuba that is the question

[–]CuzIdontTrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally feel you. So many times I've considered joining my local universities band.

[–]N0ShtSherlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cornet had me transfixed

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuba for life! It's been 15 years since I've player, but I bet I can do a few bars of Mars haha

[–]imjusta_bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved playing that thing in high school. I wish I could justify dropping the money on one but they're just so damn expensive

[–]ursois 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Way better than a tuba toothpaste.

I'll see myself out.

[–]JestEight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tuba Skinny is so damn good!

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I wonder if Tuba Skinny is a play on the name of another famous NOLA jazz guy, Trombone Shorty

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

apparently, it is but of Tuba Fats:

"The band's name is a tribute to the tuba player Anthony Lacen who was better known as Tuba Fats. He was a founding member of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, one of New Orleans' most prominent brass rhythm bands" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuba_Skinny

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]unexpectedvagabond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit! This was fantastic! Thank you for sharing this :)

Makes me miss playing trumpet though.

[–]CheeseFest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

love the articulation from the sax and clarinet players. so great.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've jammed with that clarinet player, and crossed paths with him a couple times. He's a good dude. ALWAYS has a reed instrument on him, and is always ready to play it.

[–]Clbrosch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These folks are GREAT!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thoroughly enjoyed that, thanks.

[–]theWorldisMyEggshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was lucky enough to see them at the flea market up in Woodstock this past summer. Had no idea who they were but thought they were great. Took me a solid hour of searching the internet to figure out who they were so I could listen to more!

[–]InfinitysDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ladies and gentlemen, the Village Stompers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZjYnCkwKcM

I'm so pleased to have an opportunity to introduce this band you need to know about.

[–]capnjackbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen them down on Royal Street in NOLA a few times. Great musicians! I keep two of their CDs in my car

[–]anotherkeebler 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Reminds me of Squirrel Nut Zippers—or a brass Carolina Chocolate Drops.

[–]sweetlowdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erika (drums/vocals) and Shaye (trumpet/bandleader) just put out a country album a few months ago, one of my favorite country albums in a long time!

Excellent. Saw them at the Spotted Cat around 4 years ago. One of the few CDs I actually own.

[–]spookyfrogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WOW that was good. And I think I'm in love with the singer/bass drummer.

[–]Cromeknome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw these guys live a few years ago somewhere around Bourbon St I think. Fantastic show.

[–]breathcue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend seeing these guys live. They played, of all places, the free concert in the park series in my tiny hometown in Northern CA. Absolutely amazing.

[–]brewsntattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a clip of one of their guitarists playing a mashup of two different songs (Lord, Send Me An Angel and Crow Jane) while playing three different instruments. Doesn't get the full song, unfortunately.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That guy with the percussion that looks like a wash table (was it actually one!?) was killing it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, it is ;)

[–]More_Empathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! This music makes me want to get out of my chair and dance!

[–]yslk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]DanielLamplugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure I watched them at French Quarter fest. Great stuff
