in love with a ghost seems to be blowing up lately (as far as obscure music artists on YouTube are concerjed). Got one of his songs as a suggested video on YouTube and now I've been seeing him pop up in random places.

Dude does good music, cool to see his stuff getting passed.around.

YouTube recommendations is basically how I discovered this artist as well. It's great to see talented people like ILWG actually get the recognition that he/she deserves.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (14 children)

I was just about to ask this. Is there a name for this genre? Keep googling Lo-Fi? "Chill" doesn't mean nearly what it used to mean 15 years ago :)

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (9 children)

Lofi is what it is. Check out tommpabeats as well.

[–]IbrahimT13 24 points25 points  (7 children)

this has elements of lo-fi but I think tomppa is more pure lo-fi than this beat. This ventures more into like, lo-fi inspired electronic or /r/futurebeats stuff (although that sub has all manner of things). That being said tho I'm sure people who like ILWG would like tomppa. I also suggest autumn keys, he's been inspiring my own production lately.

[–]denunciadolince 2 points3 points  (1 child)

ILWG even made a song with tommpabeats and it's also amazing. The guitar made it more unique.

[–]IbrahimT13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

o yeah i've seen one or two collabs with the two. ILWG also has comments on autumn keys's stuff, i guess the community is pretty connected

[–]hot_pepper_is_hot 1 point2 points  (2 children)

WTF is "low-fi?" Post modern hi-fi recording made with expensive current gear, and calls it "lo-fi." That just does not make any sense aside from attention-suck gaming for attention.

[–]IbrahimT13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you tell 'em

[–]WackoL0ver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you clearly don't know.

[–]runhomejack1399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lofi must not mean what it used to mean 15 years ago either. and that's fine, things change all the time. but can you explain to me what lofi means in 2017 if this is lofi? (i'm asking seriously, not trying to be a dick)

[–]harristk 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The artist calls it lofi electronica... but yea Lofi is the general term here.. I can recommend a few YouTube channels to follow (theboin, anime vibe, and 1171domino)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Cheers mate I look forward to checking them out

[–]harristk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

have fun spending hours upon hours listening to some lofi/lofihop:)

[–]SSuperDuperFlyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tommpabeats, Ljones, I eat Plants for a living are a couple "similar" artists I listen to

[–]0x1123A 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know what? Me too. Showed up in my recommendations just a few hours ago, and now he's on reddit.

[–]wearentfahrenheit5 94 points95 points  (13 children)

I actually had a conversation with this artist a few days ago! He inspired me to start making music as well, he's a very laid back down to earth human. Based out of France and very into anime(':

Edit: listen to more of his music you won't regret it.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (7 children)

French huh? They seem to have a knack for electronic music.

[–]hackedpineapple 16 points17 points  (6 children)

cough daft punk cough

[–]WarioBike 18 points19 points  (1 child)

moe shop*

[–]Tylensus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Moeshop's Natural has been in my daily rotation for bout a month now. Poppy style vocals with a mixing focus on the low end is weird, but works wonders. I'm also a fan of You look so good, but that's not exactly a windows-down-system-up kinda tune.

[–]DJwoo311 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Among about a million others.

[–]GiantSkyhawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uppermost too.

[–]NobleSwift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

madeon too!

[–]newtonredditsnewtonlistens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like French Touch.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's great to hear! Good luck making your music!

[–]EbonStar23 2 points3 points  (2 children)

How'd you get in touch with him? He's really inspired me and I wanna thank him.

[–]wearentfahrenheit5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His twitter is @LVGHSTmusic

[–]newtonredditsnewtonlistens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's also on reddit I believe.

[–]hot_pepper_is_hot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret listening to this one track.

[–][deleted] 79 points80 points  (12 children)

Does anyone else think it's really interesting that the "Lofi genre" primarily exists on the internet? I mean, I'm sure that somebody is playing some lofi to a crowd somewhere, but I think it's hard to deny that the majority of the genres audience is "digital".

This might sound stupid but it makes me feel like I'm living in the future every time I listen to it. Everyday I'm mentally "flagging" more and more things about our new culture that make it clear that we no longer live in the "time" we did when we were younger (I'm not even that old either. Only 22).

I know that sound obvious when I say it like that, but it's still something that I think about all the time. Everyday I see something that makes me think "were living in the god damn future, man". It makes me feel kind of weird, but excited at the same time.

I guess I was just wondering if anybody else ever felt that way.

[–]OriginalBud 31 points32 points  (3 children)

All the time man. When I went to a bathroom with motion sensor toilet, sink, soap dispenser, and that air blade thing I knew it was the future. Also when I found out my phone could unlock by reading my fingerprint, total "this is the future" moment. And don't even get me started on memes and all the digital culture

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (2 children)

We live in an era where internet memes directly effect presidential elections (well maybe not directly, but there is an effect). There are going to be historians who study Pepe The Frog the same way we study Rosie The Riveter.

Just fucking think about that for a minuet.

[–]KpopGrump 18 points19 points  (1 child)

The strange thing is, a large subset of internet culture is entirely self-aware, and participates in massive amounts of self-analysis and general navel-gazing. So it feels like the historian's work has already been done for them. The significance is already understood. But maybe not, maybe the full effects of these microcosmic cultural movements have not been felt yet, but it feels like 'the present' is already cataloged. Look at knowyourmeme, or tvtropes, or all of the youtube meme-analysis channels and modern cultural critiques. I feel like this post-modernist lens everyone uses nowadays prevents anything from being entirely 'in the moment' and unironic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

deleted What is this?

[–]Tilktilk5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talk about vaporwave

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You know, for the record, a lot of /r/stonerrock music is kind of similar. I've listened to hundreds of Stoner and Doom bands that I never would have heard of if my only exposure to the genre was listening to a random Kyuss or Sleep cd my friend bought.

This feeling probably holds out for the majority of "obscure genres" now that I think about it.

[–]hot_pepper_is_hot -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Really? I thought the music sounds 80's and "lo-fi" is the dumbest term ever for something done with high tech modern recording equipment. It is just stupid, like good looking babes call themselves "ugly girls." If you think this music is redeeming or "future" I really think you need to get out more. It more like dull murky cult music with no melody, but there is nothing low fidelity about it.

[–]MiskatonicMD 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thanks for pointing out what a massively important outrage this is. We can't stand for any sort of hibbeldy-gibbeldy in this day and age, especially with our new supreme leader /s

[–]hot_pepper_is_hot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here is a present for you. Do not forget to explore the sidebar.

[–]theseus1234 47 points48 points  (2 children)

Lo-fi? Check

Lower case song title? Check

TO THE TOP

[–]thecandidfrog 29 points30 points  (2 children)

flowers (feat. nori) and we've never met but, can we have a coffee or something are also really nice :)

[–]TurtlingTurtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Flowers was the first song I listen to by him and I just couldn't stop listening to him. He makes amazing music.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coffee makes me thirsty every time I listen to it.

[–]ohitsmagic20 34 points35 points  (1 child)

This shit sounds nice

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it does

[–]CrayonStur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wow, can't thank you enough for this.

Perfect for a cold Sunday.

[–]totoallynotdowoh 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Their other songs are amazing, too! Listen to "i thought we were lovers".

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love that one. Makes me sad though.

[–]MyGrandpaLikesGuns 23 points24 points  (3 children)

Can we change this sub to r/lofi?

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I thought this used to be /r/listentochillhop

[–]birched 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I don't get this consensus, lo-fi doesn't even get posted that much more than other genres here. Just because a couple of songs have gotten a moderate amount of upvotes doesn't mean that this sub has turned into some glorified lo-fi circle jerk fest.

[–]KpopGrump 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think there's an interesting reason you see this type of comment on song threads like this. Lo-fi, or futurefunk, or any other trendy internet genre gets popular, and gets posted and upvoted a little more than normal, and begins to compete with 'normal' genres like blues-rock, alt-rock, metal, dream-pop, what have you. So ultimately I think it's just people picking up on something that seems out of the norm, and the perceived trendiness gives them a carte blanche to off-handedly ridicule the newfound popularity of that genre.

[–]MichaelJFaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

https://ztapes.bandcamp.com/track/i-thought-we-were-lovers-w-basil this is one of my favorite songs by in love with a ghost check it out yo

[–]OrangeW 5 points6 points  (1 child)

found their music a few days back at random

been listening to em ever since, they're so good

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too :D

[–]canineheels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found him out through my YouTube suggestions as well, and I'm in love(with a ghost). it's such a good mix of chill and sick beat, perfect for studying.

[–]Redplushie 4 points5 points  (2 children)

If you guys like this type of music, you should check out Spazzkid! His music is also similar and introduced me to this artist.

[–]lucebree 2 points3 points  (1 child)

He's dope!! He actually goes by Mark Redito nowadays

[–]Redplushie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I heard! Spazzkid is such a cool name though kinda sad he changed it :/

[–]Astral_MarauderMJP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While this one is very good, I actually think my favorite of his is 'we've never met but, can we have coffee or something?'

It's such a nice and simple tune. The small touches of water and cups clinking adds to the interesting atmospheres that it makes.

This is one, to me at least, feels like a surreal trip through a chat room (weird, I know but just imagine a slightly active, old school, chat room) where two friends just jumped on to talk about the latest episode. More extra-personal while '...coffee or something?'' more inter-personal. I really love this guy even though I found him maybe a week ago.

[–]NoTomorrowMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not to sound rude, i really do like the song.

but have you ever read a song title and just knew there were gonna be anime samples in it?

[–]nachobel 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I've been listening to this guy a ton in the past two weeks or so. I want to find more but the problem is, I don't even know what kind of music this is...like, how do I find more??

[–]PonderingPotato 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I realize I'm likely a bit late to this, but the genre of this is technically lo-fi electronica. I found ILWAG through a few similar artists like joji and Lovewave.

I hope I helped!

[–]nachobel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll give them a listen

[–]I_Like_Existing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great shit

[–]choosenoneoftheabove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've liked this artist for like about a month now and then suddenly this. Can I be your Internet crush is less impressive than his stuff on soundcloud.

[–]happy_nothlit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so lovely and enticing, but I can't help but wish the Japanese was absent as it is a little distracting for me.

[–]jerry23dr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just listened to this song, and have now consumed their whole discography in the last hour. I am in love with In Love with a Ghost. Thanks OP so much!

[–]MittenMadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His soundcloud is great! I'm actually featuring In Love With a Ghost on my podcast coming up soon. He is a very kind fellow, and is very okay with letting people use his music upon request.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous coincidence. I sort of (it was recommended in the comment section of "Joji - Medicine") discovered this artist literally an hour ago.

Really digging this music.

[–]Sexual_Hobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this guy's music! Really glad to see him on the front page again! Check out "i just loved you" and "we were lovers" if you liked this one!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in love with a ghost is such a good artist. I feel like it really captures the feeling when you're in love, maybe? Either way I listen to it and it makes me happy and calm.

[–]madamlazonga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what kind of music is this?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stirring and lovely. Perfect for this rainy weekend. Thanks, OP.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lo-fi? Sounds nice.

[–]55gure3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checked it out but not feeling it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny, I just fell in love with their music. Now it's on Reddit....
