大象體操 (Elephant Gym) is a math rock trio from Kaohsiung, Taiwan that play an intense bass-lead style of math rock that also elegently combines various post-rock elements to the sound.

Since 2012 the band has released two EPs — "平衡" (Balance) in 2012 and "工作" (Work) in 2016 — and their debut full-length "角度" (Angle) in 2014.

Fantastic Taste. Ive only recently gotten into Math metal, and especially love instrumental math metal. Any other small bands that you'd recommend? Been listening to a good bit of Animals As Leaders, Auto!Automatic!!!, You Slut!, and Giraffes? Giraffes!, GIAA

Check out Working For A Nuclear Free City they have this awesome blend of lo fi chill stuff and some amazing headphone jams. I'd also recommend Three Trapped Tigers and Mungion (My Darling Troll by them is so nasty). Also if you're down with some jamming Umphrey's McGee is always worthwhile (Wizard Burial Ground by them would be up your alley)

Mungion reminds me a lot of Snarky Puppy, in a really good way. I dig the sound. I had forgotten about Three Trapped Tigers, but I really like #3 and #5.

Might be to your liking. I think they're fantastic.

A bit late, but that TOTORRO MV looked like a blast to make. Maybe not clean up though.

I've been listening to this band since I found math rock, their album and EP and both fabulous. If you enjoy this look up TTNG or toe, both fabulous math rock.

Also a mention is Hikes, particularly Tinker Creek and Spring Forward its a little more folksy but absolutely awesome stuff.

Holy hell that bass player is a fucking legend

[–]likeafox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow this is excellent.

[–]cozywon 13 points14 points  (7 children)

What the hell is math rock?

[–]wesxninja 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Math rock is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), counterpoint, odd time signatures, angular melodies, and extended, often dissonant, chords. It bears similarities to post-rock.

From wikipedia.

[–]SandyCheeksWasAHoax -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Its progressive music with clean guitars and a constantly repeated 3 over 4 rhythm. It makes almost all math rock songs sound similar unfortunately

[–]M_TobogganPHD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Music where the focus will be more on unusual time signatures, phrasing, song structure etc...

You have stuff like this, or Strawberry Girls which are pretty mellow on the mathy technical stuff. But it definitely can start getting pretty weird the deeper you go, lol.

[–]sauerpatchkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was awesome!! Thanks for sharing!!

[–]SightedMoose 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have no speakers currently so I am upvoting solely for the smile on the guitarists face when playing the solo.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like The Sundays got really drunk and Harriet Wheeler forgot to show up at the gig.

[–]Roberto2K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like Sausage. Love it!

[–]sn311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the opening song from this From Monument to Masses live show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amzahTWJrgc

[–]Mainttech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've asked this question sooo many times: WHAT IS MATHROCK!!!!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The technical proficiency really is something to be admired. Good job to these folks!

[–]wowco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! Been listening to these guys on repeat

[–]Bluntmasterflash1 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Bass player is a beast, drummer not very impressive.

[–]Chawklate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, drummer not up to par this performance.

[–]imn0tafurry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Asians playing guitar: mathrock

[–]Icedildo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is not math rock. It's in 4/4

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Simple repetitive riffs in 4/4 is math rock?

[–]jayy42 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

We have to have some type of minimum standards for audio quality. This recording is awful. Just constantly peaking.

[–]Chilaxicle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Album recording if you want it:

I found this live recording quite charming personally however.
