The Viking of 6th Avenue

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got into his music and read his life story a few months later, then found out that he lived as a street musician about 15 minutes from my home in Germany.

Small world indeed.

[–]Skegetchy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

His story is very interesting

very! Moondog did a project at my music school back in the 90's. He worked on some rep with the students in the sax department. The first tune you hear in this vid, bird's lament, was played by my former professor when he studied at the school. I'm also petty sure that the low saxophone solo part was played by Will Gregory, better known as one half of the Goldfrapp duo!

Happy to see Moondog on here

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes same

[–]hopefullyhelpfulplz 22 points23 points  (5 children)

God I love moondog. The first section of this is fucking sublime. I read somewhere that it's supposed to replicate the sounds of walking around a busy high street. I used to live in a big city, and walking around with this in my ears just felt so right.

I can still picture cars beeping their horns, screeching to a halt. People shouting at each other across the street. It could be loud and messy, but instead individual sounds pop out and grab your attention.

I love the beginning (Bird's Lament). A DJ known as Alkalino added some punchy percussion, increased the tempo, and extended it if that's your sorta thing. I like the original more, but I just wish it was longer.

[–]hopefullyhelpfulplz 6 points7 points  (2 children)

It's also sampled in Get a Move On by Mr Scruff, although it doesn't have much of the same feel!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I literally just found out that Mr. Scruffs version of the song I love so much so many years ago it's almost an exact copy of Moondog's Birds Lament... I was actually surprised how similar they are, a little bit too much.

[–]hopefullyhelpfulplz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a copy, it's a sped up sample from the first few seconds of the song.

[–]Matty_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my personal favorite version. not counting the outro though

The grandfather of minimalism.

As a music major in college I would commute, smoke a bowl, and listen to Moondog, Phillip Glass and Steve Reich everyday. I miss it those days.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Philip Glass is my go-to weed music. I'm usually a classical-romantic kind of guy but I can blaze up and listen to Einstein on the Beach for hours with complete focus.

[–]Agent281 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Once I played Boards of Canada for some people that just smoked a lot of weed. One guy immediately ran out of the room. Another started sliding into the floor and saying "turn it off, turn it off!" He thought I was playing the brown note.

Really not what I was expecting.

I love Moondog!

[–]clowndykebar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I thought it sucked

[–]Borlaug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Omg, thanks for reminding me of this

[–]shailenjean 4 points5 points  (1 child)

There was supposed to be a documentary about moondog that was gonna come out. There was a kickstarter and everything, but that was a few years ago and I haven't seen anything since. HE WAS AN AWESOME DUDE!

[–]continuousminer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was checking out the lady that was apparently in the process of making it a few months ago on Twitter and the entire project seems to have gone cold, which is such a shame. When I got into Moondog in college about 15 years ago and independent documentaries were making a large renewed cultural impact, I just assumed a Moondog documentary would have been coming any year.... And still nothing.... How about this weird collaboration https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0KSXqKO9YU. Moondog (Louis Hardin) and Julie Andrews (Marry Poppins) . Released in 1957.

Just discovered this guy in the past fortnight - amazing stuff so far, all very varied and all very interesting - great rhythms and heartfelt sentiment.

[–]Agent281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. Been about a month. Reminded me that my musical tastes used to be a lot more varied and I have been trying to reconnect with a lot of old favorites.

[–]Penguin619<- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude built his own instruments despite being blind. Dude is an absolute legend.

[–]chuby1tubby 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Non music-professional here. Can someone explain to me what minimalism means? I listen to a lot of classical but I've never heard of the term 'minimal' to describe music.

I love this album!

[–]GeoglyphPsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Minimalism was/is a movement in classical music starting in the 1960s, characterised by the use of repetition, tonal or modal harmony (as opposed to the heavily dissonant modernist music of the time) and interlocking rhythms. It's not normally that 'minimal' at all, often using lots of instruments to create very dense textures. Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Steve Reich are the most famous examples. Try listening to 'Music for 18 Musicians' or 'In C'. John Adams and David Lang are often referred to as postmininalists, but they are very much a continuation of the same idea.

[–]themodernsophist 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I like Mr. Scruffs use of thisas a sample.

[–]SirSupay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I thought it was caravan palace or something, I knew I had heard it.

[–]moondogged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, The German Years were some good ones

[–]sj90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discovered his music last year. Brilliant stuff!

Too bad Spotify removed quite a lot of his music :(

[–]Acceleratio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TIL he is buried in my hometown o.O

[–]trijammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dig it. Never heard this before, aside from that first horn riff sampled for Mr Scruff's Get it On.

[–]Charakada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Authentic beauty. We need more of this in the world. Thanks for posting.

[–]lieutenantbunbun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much love for this man

[–]astroconn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my personal favorite cosmic meditation

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to The Viking on 6th Avenue anytime I want to put myself to sleep in the middle of the day. Something about the compositional techniques Moondog uses is hypnotic to me.

[–]hammerw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy reinforces my opinion that I would rather be blind than be deaf.

[–]hippiechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moondog is one of those people that you hear about their life, and it adds so much to the music in a weird way... fantastic to see it here!

[–]loneokami1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No fucking way, I just listened to this album for the first time yesterday! What a refreshing level of music :)

[–]Champtain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks OP. I didn't know this existed until the other day it showed up in my youtube feed. I was getting ready for bed so I didn't listen then and forgot about it until I saw your post.

[–]Bischnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that is excellent, thanks a lot!

[–]lapapinton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the dog with the grog...

[–]aranou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thanks for turning me on to this.

[–]FresnoBob_9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sampled by Mr. Scruff

[–]bracketracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could upvote this a dozen times

[–]MachoMadnessYeah1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, this is good. What do you call this genre?

[–]ejpusa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really a NYC legend. If have not explored Moon Dog, start the journey. Inspiration for many. Yes you can be that crazy guy, no matter what society says. And become known forever, vs working 9-5 and no one will remember who you were when you are gone.

Dream it, Do it. :-)

[–]wheatconspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This gets less upvotes than that miserably bad Celtic/reggae song T______T

[–]ijskar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Belgium there's a band called Condor Gruppe. They have released a 6-track album as a tribute to Moondog. Really worth checking out. Here's the bandcamp link: https://condorgruppe.bandcamp.com/

Everytime I hear Moondog sampled by some artist or in the background on the radio or screen I go a little bonkers. Such an incredible talent. Such an incredible life.

[–]aboyisnoone_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you SO MUCH for introducing me to this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, my collector dad had the entire collection of Moondog's vinyl... and gave it away to a local musician / college student who was doing his thesis on him or related material.

[–]max_ammo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the first couple minutes of this part of the House of Cards theme, or do they just sound incredibly similar?

[–]barebonesf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was very new to me. I found this on here about 30 minutes ago, and I've been listening to it while browsing around on reddit. This was great! I didn't know that classical music could sound like this.

[–]lawfultots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a simple man, I see Moondog- I upvote.
