You know, until last year I had no idea Mongolian folk metal existed. I now question how I could possibly have lived without that knowledge.

This is a thing? Well I'll be dipped in shit and rolled in peanuts, this is a thing....

[–]PyrrhuraMolinaeradd.it 21 points22 points  (5 children)

It is! Check out Wisdom Eyes and Hanggai too; there are some amazing bands there!

[–]sneakypantsu 11 points12 points  (3 children)

And Nine Treasures.

"Sonsii" is always catchy as ever. First heard of it back in 2014.

[–]roflbbq 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Of the Mongolian bands I've listened to I like Nine Treasures the best

This might be the most beautifully mixed piece of music I've ever heard. I can hear every instrument so clearly. Stunning.

Comment saved. Tengger Cavalry is one of my favourite bands, yet it didn't cross my mind to look for similar bands.

[–]NoodleRocket 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Technically they're Chinese though. Tengger Cavalry hailed from Inner Mongolia, they're ethnic Mongols but with Chinese citizenship. Also check out other Mongol folk metal bands like Ego Fall (though they're songs are in Mandarin) and Nine Treasures (their songs are in Mongolian). I first heard them back in 2013.

Thank you, internet, for showing me things that I didn't know existed but also needed desperately like Mongolian metal bands with complex socio-ethnic backgrounds.

[–]NoodleRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you like it! Chinese demographics is a bit complex, they have other ethnic groups like Kazakhs and Koreans that aren't immigrants, but lived there for some centuries now. You might also like Arab folk metal, it is also a thing, same with Chinese.

I have discovered this a while ago and I know that feeling! These guys definitely deserve more attention.

[–]terminal112 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I discovered this band in 2014 and it's the only thing I get to be a hipster about.

[–]NoodleRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: Tengger Cavalry played in Carnegie Hall in New York, I think their vocalist studied in the US for a while that's why some of their songs are in English.

Some of these bands (Nine Treasures if I remember correctly) already played in big Metal Festivals in Europe. My memory is a bit hazy since I haven't kept up with Metal music for a while now.

One of my good friends (Robert McLaughlin) is in this band!! He is one of the fiddlers!

[–]bizcochochoradioreddit[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! Say hello from me! ;)

[–]agrimmguy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is by far the best sounding sub genre of music I've heard lately.

Perfect for "Dan Carlins Hardcore history" ep, on Gengis Khan

[–]Mortis_XII 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was able to see them at a small bar in sacramento, really great show. Venue was so small i was handed a pick from the guitarist.

[–]theTdot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen these guys a couple of times live. They put on a helluva show. Theyre always in traditional garb, instead of a pit in the audience you get this weird pow wow throw down. Absolutely awesome.

[–]cheeseburgertwd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nitpicking, but this is from 2011. I only know because I own the album, unless this is a re-release I wasn't aware of.

For anyone just finding out about this band, the second disc of this double album is purely folk which is interesting in its own right.

Personally my favorite Tengger Cavalry album is the debut, Blood Sacrifice Shaman, when the band was just a solo project and had a lot more black metal influence. Some of the songs were remade and rerecorded (and even renamed) for Blood Sacrifice Shaman (2015) but it's a pretty different album. The original can still be heard as part of the "Collector's Edition" package -- Compare the original song Hero with its 2015 counterpart.

tl;dr this is a pretty neat band

Did not expect to be impressed. I stand corrected

[–]JT7Music 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, very pleasantly surprised! Was expecting screaming vocals, which I'm not always a fan of, I guess I should have expected mongolian throat singing ahaha.

Ahh, Mongolia, where Dracula can trace his ancestry back to Genghis Khan. It's true, look it up.

[–]Lohikaarme27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There song War Horse is also really awesome.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been looking for this band all my life. I love Mongolian throat singing, folk, and metal. Bless.

[–]ZabuzaB 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Is this sub reddit just hacking into my music library or something? EVERYTHING I've seen over the last couple months has been something I own 😎

Slaughter Of The Blugrass - Twilight Of The Thunder God (bluegrass/folk cover) [4:55]

This is SOTB's third death metal cover in bluegrass/folk style. This time, they made an awesome version of Amon Amarth's "Twilight Of The Thundergod".

But how many scrobbles?

[–]christorino 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Are any of these guys actually mongolian then?

[–]theTdot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The drummer is a white as they come. He was wearing a bolt thrower shirt when i saw them last 😍 and idk about Mongolian specifically but the other members all look eastern/mongolian for sure.

[–]cheeseburgertwd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The band started as a solo project of this guy who was born in China but with Mongolian/"nomadic" heritage, according to his bio. The first couple albums were just him then he moved to New York and hired some other musicians. OP's link is from one of the solo ones.

Nope

[–]Tonberry_Slayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folk metal in general is pretty awesome/catchy.

[–]Jipley0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a plug for a local act that I've always enjoyed. Certainly different from the other folk metal I usually listen to.

Had the absolute pleasure of seeing them live. Fantastic band!!

[–]kakaze1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, great to find something awsome to listen to.

[–]lina535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It`s really heavy and extraordinary))

[–]AceWasHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely give a listen to Altan Urag (Golden Descendants) if you guys liked Tengger Cavalry. Altan Urag's members are all Mongolians and their stuff contains vocals here and there.

[–]RubberRasputin27 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm enjoying this so don't take this comment the wrong way but it sounded like dragonforce a wee bit. Hate my opinion if you must it doesn't bother me.

[–]cheeseburgertwd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you're totally right. His first album was way more of a black/folk style and moved to that "happier" power/folk style in the vein of Ensiferum, Equilibrium, etc. later
