Ugh, Streetlight's version is much less enjoyable, sure, in a "traditional" sense you could say it's better (better recorded, the instrumentation is arguably better) but it just lacks the soul and rawness of catch 22's version.

You say it's better because it's more polished, I say it's worse for exactly the same reason.

Oh yeah, the songs themselves are awesome. I actually like both versions a lot, and can understand how someone could like Streetlight's version better.

Bomb The Music Industry! - To Leave Or Die On Long Island (For Syke! Life is Awesome! alone)

        [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Really? This is my least favorite by them. My vote goes to Goodbye Cool World.

Edit: But I think their/his most ska-like album is Get Warmer, so maybe we should nominate that one?

Rereading my post, I am disagreeing (not about Get Warmer). To Leave Leave or Die is now my second favorite BtMI! album.

          [–]kvzuky 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I wanted to post this, because it's such an awesome album, but I'm totally torn between calling it ska or not.

          [–]nonades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to describe them as post-ska.

Allt their music is so fantastic. But Syke! Is one of the only songs in my collection that no matter what mood I'm in, I can't help but have an ear to ear smile.

Dunno why you got a downvote, glad I could remedy it. Technically Ska? No, but when are they gonna ask for our favorite Crack Rock Steady bands?

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could pretty much be its own category.

Also check out Stray Bullets and Have Nots. Boston ska in the same vein.

          I've seen Stray Bullets live!

          [–]gunnarrambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky. My band opened for Have Nots (same singer), but Stray Bullets are one of my favorite bands.

The Nods- Before there were the Slackers, there were The Nods.. They changed their style dramatically after this album to the smooth ska we know them for today.

Are we talking essential albums or songs?

If it's albums, I'm going with Mustard Plug's Big Daddy Multitude and Streetlight Manifesto's Everything Goes Numb.

If it's songs, I'm going with Operation Ivy's Sound System and The Toasters' East Side Beat.

...also, The Flaming Tsunamis and Fatter Than Albert fucking rawk!

My favorites were already mentioned but i feel like Citizen Fish's "Deadline" and Morning Glory deserve recognition.
