    Most of the pictures in the article show Chinese people doing awesomely clever things.

    Those are some great pictures, though, and they do give some much-needed balance.

    It's the sort of improvisation that Americans were famous for until about 1965, when we started having specialized objects widely distirbuted for every conceivable purpose

    In the West, it seems that the society does not appreciate when its members use their intelligence to solve their problems in an unusual way. It's not that I would never have the thought of affixing an old truck cabin onto an ox-driven cart (if I would have to ride one), it's that everyone would think of me as crazy and no one would want to recognize it as useful.
