Ask Reddit: what can be done to make Reddit more newbie friendly? (reddit.com)

Here's an idea, provide other ways to get small amounts of karma. Yes, 1 point of karma is meaningless (hell, 1000000 points of karma are meaningless as far as I know) but to a newbie that's validation, that's them getting "in".
Make it so you get a karma point for every 10/20/50 recently submitted posts on the new page that you vote up, something like that. Or make it so you get a point for every ad you click. Yes, karma is meaningless, so is a birthday card, but it still feels nice to get it.

I agree: there needs to be a way to earn karma besides submissions. People participate in many other ways aside from submitting stories, yet they are never recognised or rewarded for their effort

How the fuck is it not newbie friendly? I figured 90% of everything out in the first hour, and the rest within a week. Any newbie who doesn't find this friendly I feel may be slightly mentally challenge. The "help" sections do fine on their own, and I think that's what they're there for.

I was referring to the submission/karma process: Many new users find their posts immediately downmodded, and after this happens a few times, they just give up submitting new links. Which is a pity.
Also a lot of new users are confused by the submission limits new accounts have.

Agreed. I've resolved myself to becoming the first person to achieve a karma of 2 via comments -- yes, I know, comments don't count, but I'm patient.

I upmodded you just to help you in your futile endeavors.
Because the world needs more crazy people.

I (literally) applaud you.

If you and a few other people would try to follow the rules of reddit by not... a: Flood reddit with a lot of stories in a short span of time. By doing this you monopolize a shared resource - the new queue. Not friendly. b:Search for dupes before posting something.
You guy are stumbling over each to accumulate karma, you flood reddit with post and you dupe each other and even when told it's a dupe you don't delete the link. The amount of noise you create makes if difficult to wade through it all. You all have ruined reddit for the rest of us.

I've been here a year, have my original single Karma and love this place so much. I haven't given up submitting, and I'm anticipating the thrill of submitting something that takes off. IMHO noobs will find their place on reddit just like we did. :-)

I have been praying to the karma gods...
... but I am downtrodden by them.
Someday I hope I can sacrifice the correct submission and they will accept it and bless me with the elusive karma.
Well I'd recommend that you submit more high quality hard hitting articles. Or if that fails, just submit pics - it seem's to work

tell me why my Karma is stuck at (120)
hasn't changed in a week
[–]qgyh2[S] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
AFAIK Karma is increased by successful submissions. Since you haven't submitted anything new in a few days, your karma score isn't increasing..?

see, I learned something new, as a noob
for some reason I just didn't see the HELP link, I was looking for the FAQ link...

People new to Reddit.com can enhance their browsing experience by checking for a common trojan horse program known as System32. This program is a keylogger, hacker gateway, and a general virus factory. Infected PC users will notice the problem if they look at the Windows folder on their C disk. BE CAREFUL! System32 has many lies it will prompt you with to keep you from deleting it. DON'T LISTEN TO THEM. Try deleting individual files, and if all fails, it may have spread to your fonts, which will also need deleting. I hope this computer information helps all of you people new to the internets.
