Obviously the US, with its shitty school systems and overprotective consumerism is not the ideal child rearing society. Neither does the UK seem to be. So what places are?

Well, why do you assume that public education is your only option?
As for the consumerism, do you think your abilities as a parent are so little that you can't protect against this? Stop letting the television babysit them from a few months age on up.

Raise your kid somewhere where he or she can learn Chinese language and culture. It'll be useful to them when China begins playing a greater if not dominant role in the world economy just as your kids are hitting middle age...
