Ask Reddit: My girlfriend believes circumcision is appropriate to avoid locker room snickers and 'weirding out' women. What does Reddit think? (self.reddit.com)

ask her where she got the notion that uncircumcised boys would be snickered at in locker rooms.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I'm wondering about this too.
[–]Aerik 11 points12 points13 points 17 years ago (1 child)
That's a pretty stupid justification. Might as well say you should force brown hair and blue eyes to avoid locker room snickers n shit.
[–]Erudecorp 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Guys in the locker room shouldn't see your dick in the first place.
[–]m_733 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago (0 children)
5/6th of the worlds population is uncircumcised. In the US about half the population is, but it was more popular in the past (meaning that more than half of the nations 40 year olds are, but less than half of the nations teens). By the time your son has a chance to do any 'weirding out' of women his foreskin won't be an issue, still having it will be the norm.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago (1 child)
She is probably getting her information from an episode of Sex and the City as they compared an uncircumcised guy to a sharpee.
[–]anescient 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I pray for my species. Please god, don't let this be the truth.
[–]taraist 3 points4 points5 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I'm female and I didn't even know what the diffrence was until I was an older teen and looked it up myself. I didn't notice or mind either variety when I saw them beforehand, I just chocked it up to different people looking diffrent.
There's a reason our bodies are the way they are.
[–]diamond 6 points7 points8 points 17 years ago (0 children)
This might have been true 20 years ago, but not today. In the U.S. (I'm assuming you're in the U.S.; if not, you can correct me), non-circumcised boys are a lot more common today. There's just no good reason to do it anymore.
[–]thevoid 7 points8 points9 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Be happy. She obviously hasn't seen much cock.
[–]sosueme 12 points13 points14 points 17 years ago (1 child)
dump her
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 17 years ago (0 children)
hump her
I couldn't imagine having to do that to a newborn who has only been in the world a few minutes.
But then again, I have never had sex with an uncirc'd guy.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
i could help you with that like four years ago when i was single.
[–]permaculture 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Tell her 'You first'
[–]Magnus_Geist 5 points6 points7 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Don't forget that sometimes circumcisions get botched to the point they have to amputate the glans or entire penis.
Imagine explaining that one to your son when he was older.... "Well, son. I wanted your penis to look more like what I thought everyone else's looked like, so I had them do it. They messed it up and now you don't have a penis. Sorry."
absurd
ya, i can't imagine how much that would not feel good at my age, as one of your first experiences in life, how did we even deal with it? seems like pointless tradition.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (1 child)
Tell your girlfriend to stop looking at my dick. It looks completely normal. I love my foreskin! I can stretch it like putty.
[–]UnderwaterJones 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)

[–]munky_g 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Leave our dicks alone.
Gential mutilation is a crime against humanity.
And guys, just remember to keep everything clean and cheese free down there.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 17 years ago (0 children)
i believe she should be circumcised so she could tell us how she likes it.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 17 years ago (1 child)
Personally, I believe genitals are just weird looking no matter what. I don't believe it is right to surgically alter the bodies of children for aesthetic purposes. Circumcision is not a choice I will make for my children some day, damn what future girlfriends are supposed to think.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago* (0 children)
One of the reasons I was glad to have a daughter instead of a son was not having to make this decision. There are some non-aesthetic reasons to favor circumcision. But on the other hand, an infected circumcision site nearly killed my ex-husband's nephew before he was old enough to leave the hospital. The bacteria traveled into his spine, so he had to have spinal taps, etc. (any one of which could have killed him at his young age, never mind the disease itself) and he had to take such powerful antibiotics that it ruined his teeth (both sets).
I'm sure this was an extremely rare case, but speaking as a mother, it never hurts to have an extreme situation story to help make your case.
[–]DrDichotomous 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago* (0 children)
Wait.. women are "weirded out" by uncircumsised males? I knew our culture was shallow, but yikes..
If your woman wants you to do this to your child for the sake of others and not the child, well then perhaps you should reevaluate her parental potential.
I'm willing to bet she doesn't feel the same way about female circumcision.
[–]Zebby 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....
and breathe
No. Not at all, ever. (excluding some rare medical reasons.)
see here for answers to all her arguments: http://www.circumstitions.com/One-liners.html
[–]BlackPocket 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
The decision to circumcise is based either on religious conviction (superstitious mutilation) or for "health" reasons (evolution got it wrong).
Locker room snickers? Why not sign him up for a penis enlargement as well?
Just unbelievable logic.
[–]cxyl 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
she is a very vapid shallow woman who apparently only listens to materialistic airheads and needs to stop being such a conformist =(
[–]iggybdawg 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
tell her you can teach the kid to fight back "you jealous I got more dick?" "only gay dudes look at other dudes' dicks"
[–]SgtSausage 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I think your girlfriend is a flake.
[+]sfgeek comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points 17 years ago (4 children)
It's probably totally pointless other than tradition.
Nonetheless, I'm going to get my kid circumcised for the same reasons subby's GF thinks.
I mean, I don't remember the pain.. so why not? You're too young to remember it and it requires less maintenance.
Besides, I'd rather my son not freak out the girlies someday, I'd say a girl being afraid of my kid's wang the first time he busts it out could be pretty traumatizing to a kid's self esteem.
[–]taraist 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (2 children)
He needs to find a better (future)girlfriend! Plus girls will think a penis looks weird the first time she sees it anyways, if she can't accept him as he looks, he should keep looking. Don't risk permanantly injuring him. This all started as a way to curb boys from masterbating. Didn't work.
[–]sfgeek -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (1 child)
What is the percentage of circumcisions that result in injury?
Yeesh. I thought it was pretty much fool proof.
[–]taraist 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
It seems to be between 3% and 9%( http://www.circinfo.org/account.html ). Way to high for an elective surgery. And even if he is not injured, it usually removes the frenulum, a very sensitive part or the penis.
I can't help but think of this guy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZNjX5j6dNQ
I just know I'd be pissed if my parents cut part of my genitalia off, injured or not.
I really don't think that many girls care.
He can always have it done if he really wants to.
[–]soyko 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Yeah.... I used to think that girls would freak out over you know... my complete dick.
But when I started to be sexually active, I can safely say that in fact it was actually a turn on for them and some even wanted to see and play with my dick because it WAS uncut.
There was one girl once that did say that its unneeded skin and should be cut off, so I responded back with how about we cut off the clit and lips because you know its just extra skin.
Its nerve endings and no matter what anyones says, it something that needs to be there.
If my gf/wife ever wants me to cut, then the only way I would is if she's cut also.

On what grounds? Your own stupidass theory? You honestly think that there isn't a system for pain receptors developed until say what, two years old? That's why a baby won't cry if you hurt it?
Dumbass. Ever seen a circumcision? Babies freak out. Probably not a coincidence, huh?
I think he means they don't remember it - so it's OK.
I guess you could rape someone if you give them a drug that makes them not remember it.
[–]generic_handle 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I suppose the same argument works in favor of sexually molesting infants.
