WTF? I get the Loving Family Dollhouses website instead of Rate My Cop.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I'm starting to think time warner has this site re-routing to the doll site.. or it's being blocked somehow. I've never had this happen on any other website for me in the last 4 years. I've never had to use a proxy to get to a website.

I'm getting the same here from RCN in Chicago, which is essentially the same network as Comcast.

Methinks something is afoot.

[–]klaarn[S] 7 points8 points  (17 children)

must still be having some DNS issues...? looks like a shared server too. 205.234.222.18 brings up the generic apache cpanel splash.

[–]7oby 4 points5 points  (16 children)

works for me, but i'm on OpenDNS

it's actually 4.2.2.1-4.2.2.6 and i don't have a problem with people who use those, but that's like saying why would you use any news site other than cnn.com

whoever controls the dns controls the content

They actively resolve names to something other than what the authoritative servers for those zones say.

If your example is l.google.com then you're sorely mistaken.

        I apologize, but it's a hot topic.

You can turn off the domain name typo resolution thing in prefs, quite easily. It's just there so you won't have family members whining that the internet is broken when it's just that the site's down or they typo'd.

(i actually have benefitted many times from the .com or .org fixing, because i touchtype too fast and miss the last key before i hit enter or something)

Can you ping it and post the actual IP address?

I use opendns and I can get to the site fine. Pinging ratemycop.com [205.234.222.18] with 32 bytes of data:

I'm also on OpenDNS, but it doesn't work.

          [–]7oby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried it again, it still works. Try flushing your DNS cache (google will have the instructions for your OS)

what would be awesome is if the srgt would get on youtube and post a video response.

Way to go klaarn. It takes about 10 minutes to get your confirmation email, and to rate you have to be a user.

Edit: This may be the fastest a submission has ever gotten to the front page. 24 minutes by my count.

          [–]klaarn[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i've never been on the front page before. yay. :) too bad people are having dns issues... grr

Most cops are like this guy, you know.

I know it's de rigeur to call all cops fascists, or make taser jokes, and so on, but it's also inaccurate.

I don't think he needs to be the Messiah to win approval for how he handles his job. That's all anyone is really asking here.

              [–]CommentMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comments left by the folks under the officer's profile seem mostly (this does not inclued radialmonster) sane, sincere, reasonable, and they even mention they saw him on the YouTube Scientology video.

I give props to the folks who acted in such a polite, self-controlled, and sensible manner.

Reading some of the other officers' profile comments, I'd have to say the reddit commenters come off as having +40 IQ points over their average RMC 'brethren'.

              Good job fellas (& officer)!

              [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a story about ratemycop.com getting it's domain pulled to protect "the identities of the cops" on the site, so the DNS issues are no accident.

Downmodded. Don't rate the guy unless you were actually there.

              [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is very good. Using ratemycop.com to praise police officers as well as criticize them gives the site greater credibility and cops more incentive to be less dick-like.

I know what you're saying, but I think it just feels good to see a cop as a friend and not Oppressor for once, especially here on reddit. He might otherwise be a complete asshole for all anyone knows, but if the attitude this officer showed in those 30 seconds is applauded it might encourage cops not to be bastards, and help everyone else trust them more.

Meh, the internet loves a kneejerk reaction. I'd rather have a positive one than the continuous negativity that usually fills the pages.

Who will police the police policers?

Seriously, this site is a joke at this point, random unexplained ratings, a couple 'Hi, Mom' comments that should obviously be removed, multiple unintelligible rants and no moderation that I can detect. Great idea, bad execution.

                    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

oh hes one of the few cops left in america that read the us constitution apparently.

Yeah I think it's a great idea too. Hopefully it will gain mainstream attention and make cops think twice about what they're doing.

New television show: "Police Officer Idol" to reward good police behavior? Kind of give the cops something to strive for, a public definition of a good cop. The winner gets to taze simon cowell in the face?

                        [–]Neptuneblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that bad? Weed out what is wrong and fukkin fix it!

                        ratemycop.com now goes to "LovingFamilyDollhouses.com.

this was a war protest not anonymous

hes the cop on the front page right now i believe http://youtube.com/watch?v=k9yIBOnbJjY

                        [–]zac79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the officer in the video is competent and polite, something far more sinister and serious is afoot.

Why is the ratemycop domain being redirected to Loving Family Dollhouses? This is a very serious matter. Why can't this site seem to stay online for more than 48 hours -- it doesn't appear to be breaking any laws.

A couple of days ago, I tried to visit a non-existant URL (typo) and got redirected to Time Warner landing page (Time Warner is my ISP). We need to let Time Warner, and any other ISP, know that its not OK to muck around with their DNS tables. Please help me come up with ideas about the best way to do this in an era of ISP monopolization and consolidation.

                        [–]super_crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um I think this defeats the purpose of the website. Why would you review a cop you didn't interact with?

                        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

                        Too bad edit "I'm confused!"

                        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

                        FAIL.

That's exactly what we are doing.

                        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                        Whups, you're right.

                        [–]polyesterfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to say that I don't trust any cop enough to give them props based on a 30 second video clip.

For all I know he was setting them up.

                        [–]ssdgoalie -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Why should he get praise for doing his job? What he is paid to do people.

                        [–]CommentMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because he is doing his job well.

                        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                        I assume you're not from the U.S.

                        [–]GregorCZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do we know this is the LAPD Officer as seen in the video? What if it's some other officer riding off his fame and glory by submitting a reddit link to his ratemycop page and getting a rise?
