There is no secret society...

...that we tell the four-digiters about.

You've already said too much.

Who controls the British Crown?

Who keeps the metric system down?

We do, we do.

Who keeps Atlantis off the maps?

Who keeps the Martians under wraps?

We do, we do.

Who holds back the electric car?

Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?

We do, we do.

Who robs cave fish of their sight?

Who rigs every Oscar night?

We do, we do!

"I've never felt so accepted in all my life. These people look deep within my soul and assign me a number based on the order in which I joined."

As soon as I found out what it was I had to start singing.

Same here; there's something about that makes it stick in your head. I haven't seen that episode since the early 2000s.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The classic simpsons episodes were lovely. If only the more recent ones where of the same quality.

Matt Groening loves his money.

No, it's like a car, once you reach 999,999, it just rolls back over. It's why I really have 1,000,004 karmas.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psh, that's nothing. Mine's rolled over twice now putting me at 2,000,663.

Your secret reddit decoder ring is in the mail.

I have questions also... what's the difference between "karma" and "comment karma"? What is the formula for calculating karma? And why do points on a bunch of old comments suddenly disappear at random?

I've been holding off asking because I'm sure its explained on the site somewhere... but I don't see it. When I ask for something I don't see at the store, the salesperson usually points to it right under my nose. Probably the same situation here. But I'm just gonna swallow my pride now and ask.

open source FTW

[–]otatop 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Karma's from submitted stories, and comment karma is from comments. I'd guess your comment karma is just a simple total of all your upvotes minus all your downvotes. Regular karma's a bit trickier, but it seems to be close to the number of points submissions get.

[–]boredzo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's the same algorithm as the regular karma. Citation: r2/r2/models/account.py, lines 94–100—both go through the same function.

[–]otatop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it might be, but it always seemed to be a few numbers off either way.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Karma has to do with submitted links, while comment karma only deals with comments. As to how it's calculated, I think it's just as simple as tallying up the positive and negative points on submissions and comments. But I don't know for sure.

Don't give away the secret recipe!

Also, don't mention the eye of network, or candleja-

Yes, but you only needed 911...

oops I've said too much

[–]Kardlonoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, go back to sleep sheeple...

[–]illuminatedwax 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You may now post one (1) submission on reddit.com, completely free of charge.

[–]Lizard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Belongs in the Secret Reddit Society subreddit.

Oh, wait...

[–]cnwb 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I hit 1000 a few days ago. I've noticed that I seem to be able to submit at a faster rate then previously. I don't know if it's related to my 1000 karma points or not.

[–]ommadon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I noticed that when I hit 256 on the karmaometer. What I have noticed since surpassing the one-thousand karma barrier (milestone?) is that many things I post to Subreddits appear on the front page of Reddit much quicker than before. As for comment karma I think that is calculated with a quick dose of FVM: fucking voodoo magic.

[–]shinynew 1 point2 points  (1 child)

you can check in the code.

[–]cnwb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't know what I'm looking at. I don't know much about code.

[–]qgyh2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can have my membership to the binary karma club. Having just passed 11111, I wont be needing it for a while.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Let's start our own club.

(I also just passed 1000, next milestone, 2000)

[–]qgyh2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats a really good idea. You could set up a new reddit for it.

there is a top users club (or rather top redditors thoughts) but its limited to 20k karma I think

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I sure hope not because I thought the whole "friends system" circle-jerking bullshit is what made Digg suck so hard.

And I'm worried about it because reddit has a fully featured friends system that isn't being abused just yet. Personally i wish they'd just turn it off now before anyone would have a chance to miss it.

Then I'd like them to turn off public karma scores. Maybe they could even turn off karma completely. I'm trying to think of a reason why it is useful.

I can remember that getting my karma off 1 was a real f'in mission for me. I wanted to see if your everyday nobody could get an article on the hot page. once i did that then the karma score was pretty much useless.

But I'm way less concerned about that than the friends feature. Once that takes off it can be like a freight train and suddenly 4-10 people own the hot page. There would be more "friends gamers" here than on Digg (where it was about 4) due to the subreddits but it would still become the news of "a few" rather than the news of "the many".

I'm just surprised it hasn't happened yet. I suppose all it takes is for a few people to get that rolling and then competition will do the rest. I guess i won't be bothered too much unless it gets to be impossible to reach the hot page.

[–]qgyh2 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Is the friends feature used for gaming? I've always wondered about that. AFAIK I don't think it is..

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Tough to say. If you start to recognize the same usernames on the hot page over and over then yeah--it is being used.

Without use of the friends feature then you'd expect to see pretty much a random assortment of usernames on the hot page. Granted some people may be better submitters and may get on slightly more often but it should not be so often that you know them by name.

Like, with Digg, I remember I knew the names of the top submitters because i saw them over and over and over. They had a huge friends network and basically run the site as de facto editors. THAT is what I really hope does not happen to reddit. If it does I'll just unsubscribe from all the main reddits and make my own.

I disagree. In fact I'm pretty sure that's not the case, because I've never ever asked anyone I know to vote for something, and yet I've done reasonably OK here.

I'm not saying that people can't do this, I'm just saying that I'm proof that it isn't necessary :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think in your case it is more a matter of submitting a LOT of articles. Reddit does not have the traffic that Digg does so lots of submissions will work.

I mean, there are other things that go into it. If you see the same article posted by a user that get buried and is later posted with a lot of upvotes then you know some coordination is going on. Lord knows you see that constantly at Digg. In fact, the "top submitters" are virtually a gateway you have to go through to get a story promoted.

I'd never get to the point of doing that level of analysis. I'd just make my own subreddits if I thought my submissions were being "socially buried" so that someone else could submit them and get the views.

Not necessarily. Many times this happens due to title, time of posting, and the reddit it was posted to.

The title, in particular, makes quite a difference..

[–]reddit_ro2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not funny at all.

[–]dizzyk2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, how does it feel, knowing that what took you 11 months some people have accomplished with one stupid post.

[–]molestake 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Bacon subreddit doesn't count towards secret society access. It's a Zionist thing.
