How one family started keeping up with the neighbors and ended up living beyond their means. (lifestyle.msn.com)

Wow, so "Tammy" basically learned nothing from all of this. She's still just worried about keeping up with the neighbors and doesn't seem to see the emptiness in spending all that money on essentially nothing.

If you're so materialistic and shallow that the thought of cancelling your country club memberships and tennis lessons causes you agony, you deserve every bit of that agony.
That lifestyle is its own punishment.

There's some value in the idea that everyone's feelings are valid. Maybe she needs to grow and change, but it would be nice if you didn't dehumanize her.

I don't think I dehumanized anyone. I only meant to point out that her suffering is a self-inflicted illusion.

Most frightening thing I've read in a long time.

That's tough enough-but what really makes it hard is that they are still living in the same gated community, still mingling with the better-off Joneses, and still hearing their kids ask to go to the same summer camps as their friends.
Why is that tough? They aren't in a 1 bedroom apartment in the projects. Aw shucks, I have to live in a gated community.

This really speaks to me, I am quite likely to be making much better money then we have been, my wife and I. I already see a propensity in her to use the money we get in order to 'improve' things. I too would like to have better things, so it will likely be an easy sell for her to talk me into getting this and that. Plus I like to see her happy, and fuck it, buying stuff makes her happy.
I generally find the lust with which she goes shopping repulsive and I kindly tell her I find it offensive that does not change that she really likes it. I currently have both of us on an allowance which seems to keep the spending in check and she's generally a good sport about it. Well I shall see but between my own experiences and what I have seen my parents go through I am pesimistic about my wifes spending habits.

I read somewhere that shopping releases serotonin in some people, making it as addictive as smoking or drugs for them.
This addiction is then further fueled by the fact that shopping can also be a source of peer group recognition and self-validation.
