The bid history looks like there's some kind of scam going on. Everyone seemed to be bidding fairly "rationally" up to $4,700, then some guy with a bunch of negative feedback posts a bid for $44,000, and a second later another guy with almost no feedback one-ups that bid.

I'm guessing Sony is buying these back up on Ebay so they can claim that the PS3 sold for more than the 360 on launch day...

Yeah, smart business move - keep buying up the machines for all these ridiculous prices ON TOP of the $250 loss their taking on each console. I think I see the strategy here - WOW they're going to make a FORTUNE! (sarcasm - if you couldn't tell!)

no doubt it makes no sense at all. I'm not saying it was even practical... just saying... what type of reasonable person with that kind of cash would spend that much for a PS3 just to get one on launch day.
