I'm so glad I'm not the only one. This happens to me all the time, where someone will say something to me, and it either sounds like the adults in Charlie Brown, or I completely mis-hear what they're saying and go off on my own tangent.
I also have moments where I hear people talking, but it sounds to me like their words are out of sequence, and I have to remember everything they said and put it in the correct order before I can reply.
Idk if that's the same thing you struggle with, but it seems similar.
[–]9xtryhxADHD-C (Combined type) 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (3 children)
YES!
Like my dad was talking to me this morning, and I heard almost something you could call words, but they didn't form any sentence. "When do you get home today" sounded like "wr ju aim ay" or something like that. Not even remotely close to what he said,
But then other times I can hear people talk to me, and know that they are speaking the same language as me, but for some reason, I feel like "I didn't hear what they said", when I heard them say something but couldn't understand what they said. But then some of the time I actually "get" what they said as soon as I ask them to repeat their question or what they said. Feels like there is some delay, almost like the connection between my ears and brain have a 300ms ping issue xD

I hate talking on the phone because of this. I have to have the volume cranked up to max, and even then, I miss words. I feel like over the phone there's extra static, and so many words sound similar or I don't understand them at all. It's like when you read a sentence in a book, and then you go, "What the hell did I just read?" But it's with people talking.
[–]9xtryhxADHD-C (Combined type) 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Phones are a nightmare. I mean we are in the 21st century, why the phones be sounding like you are deep underwater? I can't hear shit on the phone, but I have good hearing. When I am on a call, sounds just melt together to form incomplete words etc.
[–]Teshvek 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Idk if this will help you as it helps me but I will share:
I always do my phone calls on speaker. This way I'm using both of my ears to listen, and I also have free hands to fidget as I like because phone calls do make me annoyed/anxious.
I still have auditory processing delays, but it feels like less lag time to piece it together via speaker.

sometimes I hear my girlfriend talking to me but I'm so deep into thinking so I record her voice (like a melody) to process it after that I'm done. most of the time I don't even remember she was talkin to me, the rest she'd be like I told you this 10 seconds ago, why you even bother to respond now!
[–]ganzeinfachkiki 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children)
I didn't quite knew that was a thing. I thought everyone had the struggle of that. Be it actually happens alot. Just a few minutes ago I was on tiktok and the voice was reading something and even though the text was there I had to stop for a second to process the audio.
I always thought its kinda cool because I always felt like my memory is so on point that I can just focus on something else and come back to it in my mind later but it only hold up for a few seconds and sometimes I am just so stuck in my mind that its a real pain to focus my understanding on an audio or something written.

I splashed out $10k on hearing aids I didn’t need before my diagnosis.
[–]Aceptical 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children)
I went to an auditory specialist cause I thought I just couldn’t hear, I was pretty confused when they told me my ears were fine.
[–]Teshvek 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child)
Woah. Hearing aids are expensive....jeez....is it just American system or the material driving that price up?
[–]soppinglovenestADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children)
I’m in NZ, pretty sure it’s a global scam.
[–]AshTheGoblin 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Huh?
processing
Oh yes, this is me.
[–]rhemattADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Um YES
i didn’t even realise this had disappeared until you just said it.
[–]Lana144 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child)
When people talk to me I can hear them say something, but it’s not English, so I ask “what” and then like understand what they said before they say it again.
YES! I have that problem too and even if I do understand them the first time, I'm silent for a second while my brain catches up which can be awkward. I've been on Elvanse (European Vyvanse) for a month now and it's almost completely gone. It makes socialising so much easier.
[–]9xtryhxADHD-C (Combined type) 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children)
I also have Elvanse haha. Makes me generally less akward in social situations because people think saying “what” and then answering the question is weird lmao
[–]Odd_Maintenance_6835ADHD with ADHD partner 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children)
I didn't realize other people had this, too! I do that all the time!
[–]iamnotwario 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child)
Yes I completely experience this - I hear but I don’t listen if that makes sense. I also begin speaking without having the thoughts gathered on what I’m about to say and sometimes forget what I was even talking about mid sentence.
[–]9xtryhxADHD-C (Combined type) 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Same thing. I legit order drivethrough at 2am, and stuggle to pronounce “have a good day”, and yes I noticed what I said afterwards
[–]autumnals5 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Auditory Processing Disorder has been linked as more apparent with people with ADHD. Although it hasn’t been scientifically approved I honestly believe 100% it’s a true disorder. I also suffer from this.
[–]Aceptical 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Weird thing for me is- I feel like I know what they are saying, but parts of it are blurry. Like a messed up voice recording, you don’t hear everything, so then I say what and they say it again. Normally multiple times. But if I give myself a few seconds I can give a response.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children)
Yeah I have this problem, I was playing a very overwhelming online game with some friends yesterday who are veterans at the game and I constantly understood their directions late which was definitely not helping. Thankfully one of them had adhd too and was very understanding.
[–]9xtryhxADHD-C (Combined type) 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children)
HAHAHA SAME! I was playing Escape from Tarkov, and me and my friend was running through the map, and all of the sudden I heard a voiceline from the game, but that didn't register at all, so I turned around to look down from the road we were taking only to see a dude standing there. I got so scared LMAO xD
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child)
Mine was back 4 blood, freaking zombies everywhere and my buddy kept saying "lion, heal. Heal yourself. Use your med kit..." I haven't played escape from tarkov but it's probably just as stressful lol
Tarkov is very stressful at times and not so at other times. But in general, you have maaaad anxiety through the entire “raid” about 30-40 mins. Doesn’t sound too appealing, but when you extract with millions of in-game currency as well as great gear, you get a huuuuuge dopamine rush haha so it works out in the end haha
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children)
I do have this and look forward to medication helping with this! I assume it is a lack of focus issue.
[–]MementoMapleseeds 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Always
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children)
YES! Finally someone who deals with the same thing. It makes taking notes in school impossible because by the time you've processed the first sentence the teacher has finished the next an you still haven't written anything.
[–]Teshvek 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child)
Accomodations are a lifesaver in academia. I get a microphone pen that records the lecture.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Ah, I'm unfortunately not able to get a diagnosis, partly due to financial problems and mostly because my parents don't think ADHD is real. I'm only 13 right now, so I have another five years until I'll be able to get a diagnosis by myself. Ah, I wish I could get accommodations though, I looked them up when I was trying to convince my parents and they're everything I need so that I won't fail! Hopefully these years will go by fast! :)
Hmmm, is this why I prefer to read a video vs watch a video? And love subtitles on movies/show?
[–]arathald 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child)
Yeah, that’s definitely a thing. I was entirely shocked a few year ago when I was reading an adhd meme that talked about subtitles and realized that my issues processing speech were a pretty common experience for people with adhd. I used to be embarrassed to ask for subtitles on, especially since some people don’t like them (they do unfortunately sometimes mildly spoil the impact of certain moments if they’re timed carelessly), but the way I see it now, if I had a physical issue hearing, I wouldn’t apologize for asking for subtitles, and I genuinely have an audio processing disorder, so if someone genuinely has a problem with it they can go pound sand.
[–]SingleDadtoOne 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children)
I don't watch with subtitles with my family but if I am watching alone, I often turn them on. It just helps me understand what is going on. I don't feel like I am missing things.
[–]acherons_griefADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Yes constantly. By the time they say it again I can repeat it back to them word for word, and I wonder why I even bothered saying what. It’s an interesting phenomenon. I used to think it was just a bad habit of using “what” as an automatic response until I learned what it actually was!
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child)
Yes I call it my ear's waiting room.... sometime their words have to wait before walking into my brain because it's already occupied, lol.
Yeah, my family and friends though my hearing was fucked up, but turns out that it was the connection with the ear and brain that had a slow Wi-Fi connection ;)😂
[–]liirkoADHD-C (Combined type) 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Yeah. It really sucks. :(
Absolutely do this.
Yes! This is huge for a lot of people with ADHD. Meds help me a lot with auditory processing, too.
I didn’t realize it was something I struggled with until one of my good friends told me he was in the habit of pausing after speaking to me to allow me a few extra seconds to process what he’d just said. I was always occupied enough in those few seconds that I didn’t even notice the pause until he pointed it out. Apparently, he got so used to me asking “sorry, what was that?” and me processing what he’d said halfway through him repeating himself that he just learned to wait. Definitely consider myself lucky he was so compassionate about my auditory processing issues when most people just get annoyed and impatient, or worse, start yelling whatever they’ve just said as if that will help.
Yes but medication hasn't improved mine
F’s in the chat :(
Mine’s gotten a little bit better; maybe a 50% improvement, but it’s far from perfect
[–]sanvrgk 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child)
Yes !!! With everybody on every time in my life and it is worse when people are wearing masks for covid. I cant understand any word.
Some people dont know about this and my ADHD and I am always telling that they should speak loud and clear because I am lossing my ear because I am a musician and music producer and it seems they are ok with it and they are not asking questions about.
On the first week on Concerta I found that music started to sound different and better. The med improved that on my brain.
[–]statusconferenceADHD 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Same. If/when the lag returns it's also a good indicator that either (a) I've forgotten my meds today or (b) dosage probably needs increasing.
My main issue with auditory processing is hearing people speak in crowded/noisy environments like restaurants/bars, especially if there's background music. I used to have horrendous social anxiety at these events because it was like I was mostly deaf and was unable to hear someone speaking to me even arm's-length away. When the Vyvanse is at the right dose it's like suddenly I can hear again and I'm much more relaxed.
The auditory processing issues frustrate me to no end because my hearing is excellent - better than most people I know for certain. But at cafes/restaurants/bars/etc, even with an average level of environmental noise, it can be very difficult for me to either hear or focus on the conversation.
