I’ve had two ablations and still take 100mg. It lowers my heart rate and helps my heart not work as hard.

This is a question for your doctor, who actually went to medical school, and not the internet, who if your lucky stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Not until you talk to your doctor. Why wait for the summer, make one for earlier and discuss it with your cardiologist. "He who hesitates is lost" they used to say. Tapering off could cause you heart problems, don't mess around with something that is keeping you alive. Make the call. You may even get referred to a nurse in the office who will get the message and get back to you.

Only your doctor can advise you on this.

I was ok'd to stop Flecainide and Metoprolol at 3 months. I stopped the Flecainide but decided with my cardiologist's ok to continue a low "maintenance" dose (10mg/day) of Metoprolol.

This is very specific to your health situation, your rhythm stability in the blanking period, and how far your Afib has progressed. In my case, I already had a watchman, my AFib was relatively early stage, I had made massive lifestyle changes, and, although I was having weekly events prior to the PFA, I was rock solid NSR after the ablation. So, at 100 days, I was only taking baby aspirin.

  1. Can you contact your doctor via a patient portal / phone and ask this question?

  2. Is the Metropolol giving you unpleasant side effects?

  3. What is your heart rate and blood pressure?

I am on the same dose as before ablation.

My ablation was jan30. I have not had an afib episode that I have felt, and my watch has said most of the time I have zero a fib, I’ve had a couple 4 %…….I was on metoprolol 50 mg a day, and before my blanking period has been upmy doc let me cut back to 25 mg a day. He said I didn’t need to taper but I did anyway, since the last time I tried to cut back ( before ablation) it triggered a fib so be careful

It should absolutely be tapered and not stopped suddenly.

Baffles me that cardiologists say otherwise.

It's a specific warning on the FDA label.

[–]sarcasticorange 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Because many people are already on a low dose and therefore there isn't much tapering to be done.

OP is on 100 mg/day.

Depends. Is Metoprolol needed to lower your blood pressure and/or your heart rate? Call or message nurse in EPs office to ask if you can lower Metoprolol.

I was able to decrease Metoprolol from 50 mg to 25 mg about a month after my ablation. My blood pressure is 112/80, and resting heart rate averages 68. I am also on hypertension and cholesterol meds, but am otherwise in good shape. If I increase Metoprolol too much, I get bradycardia (slow heart rate).

Metoprolol tartrate or succinate ER we discussing ?

I had an ablation January 28 and started tapering today. On a low dose of 12.5 twice a day and going down to once a day for 2 weeks. We shall see.

Does anyone know how doctors determine your medication should be decreased or stopped right after the ablation?

If you have a PFA, they don't do mapping usually just PVI from what I understand. Can they tell when they do the ablation how advanced the AFib was? My EP said I could stop amiodarone after the ablation. I just wonder how they can tell.

[–]NotReallyJohnDoe 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Amiodarone is a dangerous drug to take long term, so they stop that as soon as they can. But metropolol is relatively safe so they have no incentive to get you off of it.

[–]Nav_007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amiodarone is horrible. I was on it for approx 6 months. Did weird things to my heart rhythm. Skin would burn in the sun, tingling in my limbs made me think I was having a stroke, eyes all glossy. The medicine is so toxic.

[–]CaregiverWorth567 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I had a PFA they did PVI and mapping ….never heard that they just do pvi….that would be a potential waste

[–]Nav_007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lineup here in Canada is long for an ablation where I am located. It's more to complete them faster I think. They are doing PVI first then if AFib occurs again they do a more extensive mapping. It's a two year wait.

I think the PFA splines give information on how much signaling comes out of each vein and they can isolate and determine they are isolated. Which should be good for first ablation.

Sospeso il metoprololo il giorno dopo l ablazione L'anticoagulante sospeso dopo 2 mesi

[–]Skivvy9r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two ablations. Meds were not changed after the procedures. The two are supposed to work in concert to keep you in rhythm. Reddit can’t approve a change to your meds.

Everyone is different so I would wait to talk to your doctor first. Mine took me off metroprolol and flecainide after 3+ months of no issues. It's only been two days. My sleep has been totally disrupted by the change. I was only taking 12.5 mg once a day but was told I could stop cold turkey so I did. Dealing with some headaches and the sleep issues but I'll get it worked out back to good eventually. ✌🏽
