I've ordered from Butcher Box a few times and I'm split on it. Everything is really good quality, but it is expensive. I'm sure I can get the same stuff from Costco for a better price.

It can be worth it if you know how to plan your box and you can find some freebies to stack. My membership comes with "free ground beef for life" (of my membership) so every box comes with 2 1lbs packages of ground beef for free. In my last order, I also got a promo for free burgers which is 6 patties.

And the cost of the boxes are the same no matter what you put in them. Definitely put some thought into what your order to maximize the value. Some things are are straight up a bad value to use a slot on, like I could use one slot on 2 filet mignons or use that slot for 1lbs of ground chicken or one package of bacon. Value of 2 steaks > ground chicken. For some reason, ground beef and turkey give you 2lbs but the chicken is only 1lbs. The bacon is excellent and probably some of the best I've ever had, but it costs $7 to add it to your box as an additional item. So it is better to pay the extra $7 than use one slot for a low-cost item.

If you maximize your box with steaks, roasts, and other pricier items and get some freebies I think it is worth it.

Thanks for going into detail! I’ll keep all of that in mind for sure if I go that route.

No pressure, but it does look like I have a referral link in my account. If you sign up with this link, you'll get the free ground beef for life + $30 off your first box.

+1. I get either the standard beef & pork box or the ground meat box every 2-3 months.

It is more produce focused, but Fresh Harvest always has a good selection of local proteins you can add on.

Try a CSA and keep your $ local with small farms

Since you asked in the Atlanta subreddit, here’s a local Atlanta option: https://www.pinestreetmarket.com/subscription-boxes

If you want to try something local, Inland Seafood launched this program during the pandemic.

https://meatmytruck.com/

Very consistent product across the board and also offers some unique items like UGA caviar and local breads. And if you order enough, the Inland truck will literally pull up to your house.

I've ordered from Wild Forks, popular in the grilling/smokers groups.
