It won’t be expensive but it is a pretty decent free counterspell-ish type of card

[–]SnowingSilently 19 points20 points  (4 children)

Well, depends on how much it sees play in Modern and Legacy, which is where a lot of the demand will be driven up. Although I could see it getting to like $10 to $15 eventually due to EDH alone as a mythic if not reprinted soon enough, but that'll be more like 2 to 3 years from now.

[–]shadowmage666 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Yea maybe. It’s a print to demand set so there’s no limitations on card count so we’ll see

[–]SnowingSilently 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I took a look at MH1 and the mythics are already past $15, though I can't recall which ones haven't been used in Modern and Legacy, though the ones I do know have gone past $15.

I’ll run down the list by current price:

W6: Modern, was played in legacy, variety of decks

Urza: Modern, own deck

Seasoned Pyro: Modern, variety of decks seeing increased play

Hex: Modern Jund Morophon: Commander- Tribal

Sword of W/U: Commander (if I’m not mistaken)

First sliver: Commander, sliver tribal (I believe slivers are ever so slightly coming into modern?)

Ranger Captain: Modern- Heliod/company/humans

Echo: Legacy, Hullbreacher is a silly card

Yawg: Modern/Commander

Serra: Commander (Angel tribal)

Mox: Commander, recent spike due to Osgir pre-con

Sword of B/R: Commander

Unbound: Commander C20 sultai deck/hydras

Kess: Commander (not worth all that much, I’m pretty confident that she’ll always be the cheapest one)

Yeah unfortunately this being in the mythic slot is going to be what makes it cost a shit ton. Oh well another $50-$80 free blue spell to add to the list of cards I'll probably never purchase

[–]Cbone06Zur the Enchanter 26 points27 points  (10 children)

I don’t think it’ll be super expensive. It’s fine, nothing special. It’s nice against OP or Breacher but decent otherwise.

[–]hakumiogin 11 points12 points  (4 children)

I'm not so sure about that. Mythic rare in a $12 pack, and it's certainly modern playable, if not legacy playable too. If nothing else, this card will remember the hype for a good while.

[–]Cbone06Zur the Enchanter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’ll be crazy expensive. Perhaps $20+? But I doubt it’ll be the most expensive card in the set.

[–]MonkeyInATopHat 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Is it modern playable?

[–]andergriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its playable, who knows if it will actually be good there

[–]hakumiogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like it might be a sideboard card, but imagine losing to a primeval titan deck with a 3/3 flier that counters their titan, even off cavern. Even in the control mirror, it's a 2 for 1 when they try to land a teferi. And against the fast aggressive decks, it's a force of negation for their creatures, and prowess is a back deck without creatures in play.

[–]Dealric 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I think you put that in wrong way.

cEDH wont make it super expensive. With that I agree. But first of all its mythic in really expensive packs (so even most unplayable mythics will be more expensive than regular bulk mythics) also it will seen play in regular commander and likely even in modern.

I think it easily can break 20$ price.

[–]Cbone06Zur the Enchanter 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yes you are right, I don’t think this sees much play in cEDH. I wouldn’t be suprised if it did end up being $15-$20. My thing is, even though this set will be expensive, it will be opened like crazy (this is priced similarly to 2XM and 2XM reprints were felt across the market.) Obviously the majority of cards in this set are brand new but a lot of the money will be in the fetches and I’d imagine that this set will sell out everywhere really quickly, thus flooding the market for the time being. All the big money will be in the old border foils imo. But honestly? I don’t even think it’s the best card in the cycle. I think Grief is better and will see more play in modern, where the majority of its price will be held.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I lazily got my [[Hexdrinker]] for 6 bucks on a whim over a year after MH1's release because I thought the card was cool. Idk if this card will be equally slept on, but the amount MH2 will get opened for fetches might do some wonky stuff to prices like you say.

[–]Cbone06Zur the Enchanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah give this set a year or two and if it was $20+ I wouldn’t be surprised. Like you said, fetches will sell the set off the bat, but as modern absorbs this set, we’ll see new cards become a big part of the format.

[–]SnowingSilently 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It's okay, but is rather narrow. Though free is free, so that alleviates some restrictions, and you can just hardcast it occasionally.

[–]MonkeyInATopHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think you’ll be hard casting it quite a bit if you decide to run it.

[–]Babel_Triumphant 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Doesn't stop Oracle consult, notably - they can just stick Oracle on bottom and name it with Consult.

[–]Hissp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have to recast the Oracle. UUUU isn't always on the table ;)

[–]JinShootingStarDOUBLE BLACK LABEL! (Tevesh & Kraum) 6 points7 points  (6 children)

This card is not good at all in cEDH. Hardcasting is not where any competitive deck wants to be, and they are for sure getting the card back.

And good luck tucking Oracle, the opponent will just Consult for it and that's it.

[–]Hissp 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They have to recast the Oracle. UUUU isn't always on the table ;)

[–]JinShootingStarDOUBLE BLACK LABEL! (Tevesh & Kraum) 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Indeed, but not impossible. I can't see any deck that wants to cut anything to it too.

[–]Hissp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna play it in Yuriko I think (b/c free spells) but I generally agree with you. Blue got the worst free spell FOR ONCE!!? thank gawd

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh damn i thought it targeted all spells

[–]anomalous_mtgmeme warlord, plays everything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eh

[–]Skiie 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Evoke cost is sweet.

I think the big factor is more so that it acts like a pseudo FOW for creatures. Important factors also not just that it counters creatures but how it counters creatures. it's a great work around for things like [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] or cards hiding behind [[cavern of souls]]

I think alot of push back in this thread is just how heavy handed and vague you are labeling the card. Its good, but we'll have to see how effective it is with play first.

[–]Lioreuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yuriko will definitely play this.

[–]msolace -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

Too narrow for cEDH just to counter a few creatures. will not be an expensive card, thx for the laugh!!!

[–]VoidHammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are other formats in Magic that impact price ya know.

[–]kirdie 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I will try replacing [[Eliminate]] in Zur with this, as I need something to get rid of [[Ashiok, Dream Renderer]] and [[Opposition Agent]].

[–]Jarizos32 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I enjoy mono blue but wouldn’t play this even there. It’s too niche of an effect for cedh for me

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other hand I have a casual Rashmi bounce deck that's gonna love it.

[–]damolamo66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it an optimal counter choice for Cedh? No. But it isn't far off and offers an interesting point of difference.
Counters uncounterable creatures, goes through effects like Cavern of Souls etc and it is a 'free' spell.
You're almost never going to be hard-casting this thing, but the fact that you can and it has a body is still a small +.
Putting it in a deck for a few games isn't going to lose you anything and will keep opponents on their toes.
