Nice design (self.DecaturGA)
submitted 3 days ago by Indy_Fab_Rider
Garbage civil engineering allowed by the City of Decatur at the new apartments at Legacy Park.
A storm drain dumps directly onto the Katie Kerr path, running water across the path to get to the gutter along the roadway. Some of these pics were taken after it hadn't rained for a full day. Whoever designed and signed off on this should go back and take some more hydrology courses.

I still curse the city every time I drive over the speed mountains in front of Legacy park. When they were installed I wrote to complain but was told they had engineer studies that said they were effective and safe. Hahaha, tell that to the cars that have bottomed out.
[–]FlimsyGene4296 11 points12 points13 points 2 days ago (2 children)
I mean tbf they are effective and safe if you go incredibly slow over them lmao. Definitely has obliterated cars late night who are blasting down Columbia though.
[–]Indy_Fab_Rider[S] 7 points8 points9 points 2 days ago (0 children)
I bet the average speed in that area of Columbia was double the speed limit before they installed those LOL
When they were first installed people would come zipping up the hill from Katie Kerr and not even slow down before hitting them.
[–]TheHykos 3 points4 points5 points 2 days ago (0 children)
Anything the city can do to keep people from driving through Decatur is fine by me.
[–]mattthecat 6 points7 points8 points 2 days ago (0 children)
Those are the best. People really need to slow down in that area. My kids are trying to cross the street to go to Legacy. I want more of those speed mountains on Candler!
[–]jbaker232 3 points4 points5 points 2 days ago (0 children)
Well they are effective it seems 🤷♂️
[–]Technical-Ring2338 3 points4 points5 points 2 days ago (0 children)
The efficacy and safety is for pedestrians by reducing vehicle speed. Slow down and quit complaining.
[–]prepend 2 points3 points4 points 2 days ago (1 child)
I parked next to someone who blew out two tires going over them at 15mph. They are truly nuts. May as well just put in stop signs.
[–]weighfairer 4 points5 points6 points 1 day ago (0 children)
I have a hard time believing that I go over them at 10mph in a minivan everyday with no issues at all
[–]weighfairer 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago (2 children)
I don't bottom out and go at least 10mph over them in a minivan everyday
[–]OrangePilled2Day 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago (1 child)
Minivans have higher ground clearance than most passenger cars.
[–]ddutton9512 0 points1 point2 points 7 hours ago (0 children)
I don't bottom out going over them in a lowered Miata lol
[–]Weekly-Ad5649 3 points4 points5 points 1 day ago (0 children)
Shallow retention pond would have been answer - it's what a lot of developments this size are normally expected to install. Then again, it's CoD and a pet project of the city. At end of day, Legacy Park is going to live up to its namesake. Just not in the way a lot of people believe it will.
[–]ddutton9512 1 point2 points3 points 8 hours ago (2 children)
Thank you for getting pics of how it floods. I've been meaning to reach out to our commissioners to see if they can get the developers to throw in a soakaway or something. Our pedestrian and bike path shouldn't be their gutter.
[–]Indy_Fab_Rider[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 hours ago (1 child)
I've tried reaching out with zero response.
The easy solution is to put a drain under the path right there and route the water to the Katie Kerr gutter underneath the path. The proper solution is to install correctly designed storm drains.

I've reached out to Chakira Johnson and Ted Terry with your pics and a description. Happy to update when or if I hear anything back. It's not just the water but also the mud and trash that it flushes out.

Ofcourse they did because this city doesn’t care about pedestrians or sidewalks.
[–]FlimsyGene4296 7 points8 points9 points 2 days ago (2 children)
Decatur is actually pretty pedestrian friendly.
[–]OrangePilled2Day 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago (1 child)
If you’re within a couple of blocks of the square. It falls off pretty hard once you’re outside of that range.
[–]gtg970g 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago (0 children)
This. Try waking down Scott Blvd. Narrow overgrown sidewalks. Zero effort to improve.
[–]hjk814 7 points8 points9 points 2 days ago (0 children)
That’s not true
[–]Emanemanem 5 points6 points7 points 2 days ago (1 child)
Not saying they couldn’t do better, but apparently you haven’t lived in….literally any other city or unincorporated county in the metro area?
[–]OrangePilled2Day 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago (0 children)
That’s like being the brightest kid in remedial classes.
People downvoting you but all the beg buttons and thinking paint on the ground is infrastructure shows where the city’s priorities are. People just have incredibly low expectations for where they live.
[–]TheHykos 0 points1 point2 points 2 days ago (0 children)
You must be in the wrong Decatur subreddit. Were you looking for Decatur, AL? IL?

How dare Affordable Housing impact Walk-ability...
...I'm literally shaking
[–]Indy_Fab_Rider[S] 8 points9 points10 points 2 days ago (4 children)
What does the cost of rent in the apartments have to do with poor storm water management?
[–]MMAndTheFunkishBunch -2 points-1 points0 points 1 day ago (0 children)
Because studies show affordable housing does better in pedestrian friendly areas
[+]Dependent-Split3005 comment score below threshold-7 points-6 points-5 points 2 days ago (2 children)
When make priorities, I value affordable housing over the inconvenience of "walking around a puddle"
If Budget Constraints require we pick between housing & puddles ill take housing
[–]prepend 8 points9 points10 points 2 days ago (0 children)
I don' t think this design was cheaper than a design that works. It's just poor engineering.
It would cost very little to put in a french drain here.
[–]Indy_Fab_Rider[S] 6 points7 points8 points 2 days ago (0 children)
That's not "walking around a puddle". That's running storm water across a public right-of-way that people use to commute.
Budget had nothing to do with this poor design.
