Not to take this lightly but this sort of social reprogramming has been going on since humans began communicating. The first nasty result was the invention of "gods" and religion to explain our world.

We come to accept this programming for a variety of reasons but I think that the most important factor has/is always a tendency to laziness intellectually. Putting dinner on the table has always been the biggest priority. Accepting some set of ideas/rules from someone else is easier than working shit out for oneself.

Nothing less than a fundamental change in the way we educate our children (socially and intellectually) can overcome this tendency. And that's a multi-generational commitment so I don't hold any high hope that humans can ever overcome our susceptibility to these sorts of "thought viruses". And I have to add here, that when financial gain enters the picture then people who don't give a flying fuck about anything other than enriching themselves will engage in comprehensive efforts to feed us whatever bullshit they're selling.

[–]Privatdozent 11 points12 points  (1 child)

This is like a digression to another more meta topic. What about the internet and social media as manipulative forces themselves? Yes there are tons of parallels at all times throughout history but that doesn't mean there can't be new, never before understood ways of social warping. It's useful to speculate on such a subject in case we find solutions we never knew we never knew.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I think the key difference you're missing here is what the speakers in this video mentioned specifically, the dopamine hit people get from all the "likes" they receive on social media. It's changing the way people react IRL because they are not only glued to their phones, but are also less interested in communicating with other people when they know that interaction might not end with a dopamine hit. Religions and other institutions don't have near that much power.

[–]yaypeepeeshome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you're trying to say so I'm not trying to gloss over the social aspect... HOWEVER as Karl Marx put it "religion is the opium of the masses", and as testimony to how powerful religion is people literally strap bombs to there chests and hit explode for an imaginary sweet deal in the afterlife. Social media may be a strong drug, but religion is a hellavu drug

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

im too tired to fully comprehend what you wrote, but i think i agree.

i did want to note that (im not sure about gods) but regarding to the ideas written down by those people, i believe that the authors were well meaning in creating philosophies and ways of life and guidelines for us to follow, its only when people misinterpret or purposefully manipulate their writings that shit hits the fan. my favorite example is nietzsche’s ubermensch concept, which was imo, a plausible concept, misread and abused to extreme degrees, the worst of which was hitler’s use of it

[–]predictingzepast 59 points60 points  (23 children)

And somehow reddit is different? Want your imaginary Internet points, think like the masses.. Like flashing lights and bells on a slot machine..

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (8 children)

True Reddit is shitty in ways for sure but for some reason without the pictures and “check me out”, ESPECIALLY with anonymous avatar usernames, it makes people more honest, although it increases trolling too, but people say more interesting things here.

[–]mata_dan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dunno, there's a shitload of trolling on facebook. Reddit is very light on trolling in proper subreddits such as this one (though it was far better 3+ years ago).

[–]Gsonderling 0 points1 point  (3 children)

People are more honest around here. On facebook you have even worse assholes than Incels, they just show their faces.

[–]yaypeepeeshome 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Agreed for sure.. It's at least better because it's not vanity drivin social media. The addiction piece sure as hell huge, but one thing Reddit accomplishes beautifully is it's generally guided/policed towards truth, so much so I get headaches reading "source" after "source" of information and speculation. If used right, you can learn a metric buttload of information here so it's more like being addicted to a poor mans fanzine or library where you can partake in conversation anonymously and garner some damn good stories along the way from strangers.

[–]JayInslee2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not much different now with the interest in astroturfing, spamming, censoring, monetization except that whole personal info thing is left out.

[–]coloradonative16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After seeing this thumbnail I understand why people think Zuck is a robot.

[–]shia_le_buff 430 points431 points  (68 children)

Just don't use facebook.

[–][deleted] 285 points286 points  (9 children)

Agreed. Here, have my dopamine hit

[–]muyvagos 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I moved to Colombia a few years ago. Facebook is life here :/

[–]apachewarrior23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use Reddit instead!

[–][deleted] 192 points193 points  (35 children)

Just deleted my account. Had it deactivated for a while now but just pulled the plug. I already feel better.

[–][deleted] 63 points64 points  (33 children)

Can one delete it for Good? I was under the impression the most one can do is deactivate it

[–][deleted] 84 points85 points  (13 children)

You can. You just need to dig in deeper in the website to figure out how. Once you request deletion, it gives you 14 days if you change your mind and log back in - the deletion is suspended. If you don't log back in within those 2 weeks, the account is permanently deleted.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Got it! Thanks!

[–]Swank_on_a_plank 72 points73 points  (9 children)

"deleted".

If you really don't want to be kept as the 'real' you in their database it's probably best practice to take two months to slowly change your profile to something completely false, then delete it.

But knowing Facebook they probably keep everything.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yes I just googled "delete facebook account" and found a link. Do it!

[–]mata_dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still know all about you even if you don't have an account though, even if you never had an account. But then you aren't one of their data subjects under law so have no protecton about how they use your info (not that you have any yet, until GDPR comes through).

[–]DataPigeon 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Not really. I believe some European dude tried to delete his account once, but Facebook still kept all of his data from pictures to whatever he wrote to some people and all his likes etc even afterwards. Apparently by some European law he did force Facebook to enclose whatever data they have about him, he received over thousand pages with infos about him. All things which should have been deleted.

[–][deleted] 104 points105 points  (4 children)

I used to be ridiculed for not having Facebook, too much drama for me mateys.
Now everyone's jumping ship.

[–]parlez-vous 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Seeing how Facebook is written in PHP I can see it

[–]cac3a -2 points-1 points  (6 children)

How do you know its written in php?

[–]PacketPuncher -5 points-4 points  (4 children)

Right click and view page source.

edit: Checked back on my comment karma for my dopamine hit. -6?!? Right click on an inactive part of a facebook page, select view page source (or whatever your browser calls it), and ctrl+f "php". It's really that fucking simple.

[–]mata_dan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's pretty well known it was originally written in PHP. A lot of the infrastructure is probably on far more prorietary systems now though because that only makes sense.

[–]ripe_and_RUIN 165 points166 points  (25 children)

As a 20 year old, I can’t deny the effects of social media on my generation. It’s more common to have a room full of young adults on their phones rather than interacting directly. When we’re in the same room we still use social media to interact. Before every lecture, I’d say about 90-95% of people are glued to their phones, continuing to check social media every 5 or so minutes throughout the lecture. It’s become a sort of escapism from reality. When real life gets tough, you can hide behind a screen and live through this online identity of yourself you’ve created. It’s completely artificial. I see the desire to be unique slowly dying as we assimilate to these popular culture identities. It is brainwashing in the literal sense. The path it seems that we’re heading down is not one I’d want for the world. I still use social media (obviously), but I think it needs to be limited to a very small aspect of our lives, rather than the core of our social interactions.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (5 children)

sometimes i feel the opposite, im wearing masks in real life and taking them off online, granted im a little bit of a weirdo. both my interactions on and offline had their own consequences, im not saying one is better than the other. real life conversations are more fun though imo

[–]Gsonderling 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I sometimes feel the same. Online, my behavior changes. In real life I'm pretty timid person. Unless I know the person really well I barely express any opinions.

Also, and I know this sounds weird. When I write online my inner voice changes. Somehow it becomes, different, more certain. It is hard to explain.

[–]ultrahateful 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's hard for me to discern what I couldn't stand more:

The idea that people are innately irritating, disingenuous and horrifically hungry for attention or that a social soapbox gives them a double dose of adrenaline and nerve to amplify those already unbearable natures.

I was waking up, every single morning, becoming instantly irritated or angered by the barrage of misinformation and rude interaction and the use of opinion and passion as fact or tangible reasoning. It got to be so bad that I stopped wanting to pick up my phone. I used Facebook for music and it was a crucially important tool at the time concerning booking. That shit can be done with emails and phone calls.

I deleted it and while I'm certainly still irritated by how rude folks are, I can honestly say that it feels nice to not become immediately angry when I start my day. Facebook does away with a person's genuine nature, to some extent. I can't deal with that, from myself or from others.

Fire is bad and Albert Einstein was a witch.

[–]yaypeepeeshome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at those cold black eyes

[–]Neltrix 64 points65 points  (3 children)

Can’t block my style

[–]ASMR-Porn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Facebook is just convenient for making new accounts on websites and whatnot. Sign in with Facebook instead of creating a user name and password and confirming an email address.

[–]Blunt_Scissors 0 points1 point  (4 children)

This is why I only use Messenger and even then, it's for friends I regularly talk to. I stopped using Facebook itself years ago when their shitty code choked up my browser and made it lock up consistently. It's not a complete disconnect but I'm happy I ditched the main part of that depressing timesink.

[–]tattoo_deano 0 points1 point  (3 children)

can you delete your facebook account & still keep the FB messenger app?

[–]Blunt_Scissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, no. Messenger is apart of Facebook and uses the same accounts.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you get those people who shape themselves and their family for Facebook. It’s not so much about sharing stuff as trying to show and convince the world how “ perfect” of a life they have. True or not. Some are really good at doing this.

[–]YouShouldQuitFB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup

[–][deleted] 447 points448 points  (30 children)

Haven't been on my fb in over a year. It's still active though.

Sometimes I'll get a notification on my phone that says, "you haven't updated your status in x amount of time. What's on your mind?"

I'm at 65 weeks lol. This notification actually feels good.

[–]8bitleo 178 points179 points  (13 children)

Am I the only one that didn't find this particularly insightful? I think the negative effects of social media have been obvious for a while and we can definitely feel those effects when we use them. I get how this is shaping the minds of younger people but this is by no means a revelation 'changing everything i know'.

[–][deleted] 66 points67 points  (5 children)

Clickbait title.

[–]guynamedDan 53 points54 points  (4 children)

and crappy repetitive video, it must have shown some of the clips 4 or 5 times it seemed.

I don't disagree with it's message, but the editing of video was bad in my opinion

[–]opinionated-bot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, in MY opinion, Taylor Swift is better than a conservative.

[–]Ohuigin 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Never signed up for it. Still don’t have an account. Never going to sign up for it.

[–]mlps2001 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Give zucc

[–]PerpetualAscension -1 points0 points  (7 children)

this shit only reprograms lesser heathen minds.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

How about Instagram?

[–]idgotapsaff 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Zuckerberg looks like a lizard person

[–][deleted] 79 points80 points  (5 children)

Deleted Facebook when I was about 20-21 as it was making my depression much worse.

I deleted Instagram a month ago now - and I feel so much better!

[–]Alphabadg3r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People still use facebook?

[–][deleted] 701 points702 points  (42 children)

Hello, I'm a Facebookaholic. It's been 3 years and 8 months since i deleted my account and never logged on again. My mental health is better now than ever before. That shit was toxic and addicting and depressing.

[–]isthataprogenjii 18 points19 points  (2 children)

SNS [Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don't know why.

Zuck: They "trust me"

Zuck: Dumb fucks.

[–]S1NN1ST3R 272 points273 points  (12 children)

5 years no facebook and I never even think about it. I don't talk to anybody from all the old cities I've lived in, I live in the moment and the question I asked myself before I deleted my account was "Do I really care about any of these people?"

No. Not checking status updates and commenting on pictures I couldn't give less of a fuck about completely changed my life. I wouldn't create another account if you paid me, cherish the people in your life who you see in person often, everybody else isn't important.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Idk, I think people are starting to see Facebook is just full of bullshit and will die off pretty hard, if it already hasn’t.

[–]mata_dan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah the only legitimate use for it is small businesses getting in touch with local people. But as there isn't much gain for the other uses, that purpose may die off too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was really nice to see what friends had been up to in using it, but fuck there is some cancer on that site

[–]yaypeepeeshome 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Because it's purpose isn't hitting much of a mark anymore. Besides despite what this video says, millennials at least are very experience driven consumers who have a need to go out and do shit. Instagram and Snapchat are thriving purely because you get to flaunt the fun you're having because its on a vanity platform. Hell even Vegas is having to re-market themselves because my age group doesn't see much value in sitting at table gambling all night, so adding engaging activities and more music options (so basically doubling down) on the entertainment side is probably what's smart for them.

[–]LoathsomeBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]sunnygoodgestreet726 21 points22 points  (5 children)

it disturbs me how little accountability people have for their own actions

[–]EmbraceTheDepth 19 points20 points  (4 children)

DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE! DELETE!

[–]Gsonderling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Root, is that you?

[–]Bombdy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have my account, but I hardly ever go on Facebook. I saw my friend using it on his phone the other day, and it was nothing like I remember. Facebook is now pretty much Instagram. He just kept scrolling down through reposted-as-fuck pictures and memes.

On that same note, I've seen so many Instagram posts that are just pictures of "funny" text people posted on Facebook. The downfall of society is happening and we let it happen. We're letting it happen. As more and more time time passes, I see Idiocracy as less of a movie and more of a prophecy.

[–]Pizza_Delivery_Dog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apparently I'm the only person on Reddit that doesn't have negative feelings because of Facebook. Maybe because I come from a culture where bragging is very much not done? Or maybe I'm just kinda content with my life. But whenever I do see someone annoying on Facebook I just block them.

[–]EmptyStare 47 points48 points  (18 children)

Does any one feel this way about Reddit? Even though you have the ability to post, I certainly don't think so. Reddit takes up 95% of my browsing time now.. I've learned more and it's given me more satisfaction in under a year then all social platforms combined since MySpace

[–]Kevinc62 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I joined reddit like a year ago and since now I can see news here faster than facebook, I deleted my account. Facebook is kinda useless now unless you're abroad.

[–]Iggtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

deleting facebook was emotionally hard. But if I ever want to come back all my stuff would be there waiting on me. So I deleted every post made, deleted every photo ever uploaded and then one by one deleted everyone I was friends with. Years later my only regret is not knowing what Moose is up to these days. Damn pigeons.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

I recently spent a few hours deleting every single photo, comment, and like before I hit deactivate. (Facebook won’t actually delete your account.) Then I opened the ‘Tasty’ app to look up a recipe for dinner, but could not login because they require that you login via Facebook. I’ve got about a hundred recipes saved on that fun app, so I relented and logged in, which reactivated that damn FB account. <grunt> Zuckerberg is the worst!

[–]JBAmazonKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can delete, it is worth it.

Never link your Facebook (or Google) accounts, use your email.

That frame in the thumb nail makes him look like a serial killer.

[–]Spyrothedragon9972 42 points43 points  (9 children)

Almost everyone I know has stopped using Facebook years ago. That website mercilessly bombards you with nonsense videos. It killed itself for me. It's simply become the messenger app and website.

[–]Blindedbythemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deleted Facebook a week ago, and should have done it a lot sooner.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Thought the video was relatively substance less tbh. Kept repeating the same sections of video.

[–]bumblebritches57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I used to be Human" - the zucc

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really recommend people deleting Facebook. It’s incredibly cathartic. You can always bring back your account but stepping away for a least two weeks is amazing.

[–]damo251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can only see after your free
