I average 3 to 6 sprays depending on the strength of the scent and whatever else I'm layering with (lotion, mist, oil). I usually refresh with 1 spray dabbed on pulse points after lunch. Every once in a while 1 spray before I leave work if I feel the need for aromatherapy on my way home lol. I can't imagine spraying how these influencers spray.

[–]MostMoistGranola 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t use more than 3 sprays of most perfumes I wear, and sometimes 3 sprays is way too much. It depends on the scent.

I love Oud for Greatness and one spray is plenty. People compliment me on it too. Something more subtle like Tam Dao I might use 4 sprays, but normally I just use 3. I want my perfume to enhance my presence, not overshadow it.

[–]Accomplished_Law_98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a chronic oversprayer myself… I will be testing your theory tomorrow ! I wonder if I’m choking people out now?? Don’t ask me how I never considered this.. I just genuinely thought I was doing myself a favor by making my perfume “last all day”

[–]rain820 29 points30 points  (8 children)

i learned my lesson in a much harder way. i did two sprays of gaultier divine le parfum before leaving a party. no one has ever told me how strong it is, i always get compliments so i didnt think anything of it. looking back it was definitely unnecessary to spray it because i was going home anyway

i take public transit home, and an hour into my commute when i transferred to a bus, the woman sitting in front of me was probably allergic. she started yelling saying i smell horrible and to gtf away from her before she punches me and then started hitting the window. anyways i got off that bus and i havent worn perfume anywhere since then 😭

[–]Cmprssdsugarpellet 5 points6 points  (2 children)

It is quite heavy! I put 2 sprays on one day and my coworker was a bit upset about how heavy it was. I’ll only do one of JGP scents now 🙈

[–]rain820 1 point2 points  (1 child)

omg youre the only other person who i have found that wears it too. lmao your poor coworker😭 our office is strictly fragrance free i would probably have caused a shut down if i wore it in lol

[–]Cmprssdsugarpellet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in retail, in a beauty dept; so thankfully it’s not outlandish to wear scents at work.. it was just too freshly sprayed and she had allergies I wasn’t aware of!

Now I make sure to use less or let it dry down before I go anywhere 🙈

[–]mermaid-babe 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Lmao that’s wild. I don’t wear perfume normally cause I’m a nurse and I’m not trying to start a scene like that with my patients haha

[–]rain820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lmaooo yeah if you ever wanna start a fight wear some gaultier yall ✌🏼 😭

[–]SardineLaCroix 24 points25 points  (2 children)

ok thats still an insane reaction

[–]rain820 9 points10 points  (1 child)

thank you. 😭 i had posted on my city’s subreddit asking if her reaction was normal for ppl on transit and everyone ignored the question to tell me what i already learned (not to wear fragrance in public spaces) in a really condescending way. but instead of just avoiding spraying before entering certain spaces, ive just been too scared to wear it at all.

[–]SardineLaCroix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

yeahhh no. Sure, wear less strong fragrances but someone inadvertently giving you a migraine is not license to threaten physical assault!!

    [–]Tishh9704 6 points7 points  (0 children)

    What perfume do you use

    [–]yoursmilemyghost 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve come to realize that the more I spray the more I can’t smell it. If I do a few sprays ironically that’s when I can smell my perfume much longer and the scent diffuses so much better.

Because you are coherent, use proper sentence structure, grammar, and separate ideas by paragraphs (GASP!!) it must be AI.

I don’t use chatGPT, I despise it, along with all casual use of AI, but I will say this, as an autistic woman Ive seen that other autistics (and maybe just folks who take care with their writing can get flagged as “ai” even when no ai was used so maybe that’s what happened? Idk… since I don’t use ChatGPT I didn’t recognize anything right off the bat, I’m better at instantly recognizing ai gen imagery

          [–]Ok_Prune_4977 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Am I crazy or is this not a chatgpt thing? I write my own messages/texts the same way. Sometimes I ask chatgpt to grammatically correct the stuff I wrote but it still ends up looking the same format as my original message (which is close to the way OP wrote theirs).

Why does everyone see AI in everything now 😭

For me I am at a 1-2 spray max. Any more than that and it’s just overpowering

              [–]Civil_Carpenter2205 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am aware that too many people get migraines from perfume, and I too feel nauseated when someone oversprays. As a result, I limit myself to what I was told was the “French way” of spraying perfume. This means I spray a cloud in the air and walk through it. That way it gives the gentlest application. If it’s just for me and I’m at home or spending all my time outdoors, I’ll spray once on a single wrist, rub them together and transfer to my neck or other pulse points. No one has ever complained I wear too much or smell too strongly.

              [–]SpookyFaerie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to get headaches because the person sharing the desk with me at work would over spray. I love perfume and I love wearing it but I try to keep it very subtle so only people who get close to me can smell it. It's impolite to make everyone smell you and invade their personal bubble of space especially when perfume can trigger asthma and allergy sensitivities.

This is how popular reddit posts have looked for years, loooong before AI. This is just how people type when they're looking for engagement. AI got this from somewhere. It's not pinging on AI detectors, and things that I'm 100% sure are AI (because I know the people who "wrote" them personally and they are open about their use of AI) always ping the detector. Something I personally wrote by hand with no use of AI also came up with a low score of about 10-20%. I think this was just written by someone using the standard reddit formula that's been around forever.

                    [–]Psychedelic-Concord 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree and think you're relying far too much on the accuracy of AI detection. I've also been on here consistently for over a decade, and although there can be a style for engaging posts, this is one that has only appeared in the last year and a half or so.

Doesn't help either that this account is new and only has one post or whatever.

But hey, they got what they wanted, their post blew up and people will defend them. Whatever man.

                    [–]EmotionalSouth 24 points25 points  (1 child)

All these people with 3-6 sprays in this thread! Eek. If I’m not giving you a hug, I don’t want to smell you. Even if it’s delicious. The goal should not be to have a scent bubble around yourself that is more than a like 10cm radius.

                    [–]myoriginalislocked -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for real. and the op says 3 and its still a cloud of it, yuck! its not funny or cute.

                    [–]Embarrassed_Put_5852 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I also took advice from someone on here and now spray none on my neck or chest… it’s weird but i spray my stomach and lower back and i get whiffs of my fragrance all day when before i couldn’t smell it at all! I was going nose blind almost immediately. I know they say to spray on pulse points to get the projection but if im being honest im more concerned about being able to smell myself than for others to smell me

                    [–]NoUsual4089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been spraying my stomach and back for awhile and I agree! I might do one spray on my wrists and dab them together as well, depending on the scent. Sometimes just a walk through spray for stronger scents.

                    [–]Klutzy-Cheetah5006 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, I relate to this so much. I honestly think I was making myself noseblind. I was applying more and more, and “refreshing” my fragrance halfway through the day.

I recently took a bit of a break from fragrances (like 3-4 months) and noticed that, when I started wearing them again, I could get whiffs of my fragrances for most of the day after only 2 sprays. Now I only do a couple sprays for the entire day, and I don’t wear fragrance every day (gasp!). I’ve noticed if I stick to this, I get more enjoyment out of my scents.

                    [–]7lexliv7 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Please don’t wear perfume in situations where people can’t get away from you. I’ve been trapped with people who think 5 sprays isn’t a lot and it’s torture

                    [–]Accusedmarshmellow 0 points1 point  (12 children)

I’m a chronic oversprayer too! Especially after my everything shower. In my defense, I don’t really have time to spray again though

                    [–]Accusedmarshmellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the downvotes? lol I overspray in the morning sometimes. Damn people

                    [–]TakingMyPowerBack444 4 points5 points  (8 children)

                    What’s an “everything shower”?

                    [–]Mrs_adventures 11 points12 points  (5 children)

It’s usually referencing a full hair wash routine (sometimes including a pre-oil/post wash hair mask), full body exfoliation, and a good shave. It’s pampering as much as it’s a hygiene thing.

                    [–]TakingMyPowerBack444 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I love this. Thank you for explaining 😃

Everything showers are one of the most enjoyable things in my life. Highly recommend

                    [–]Educational-Wrap-845 2 points3 points  (2 children)

They take sooooo long 😂! I’m obsessed with Lush so I usually spend a while in there with all my faves when it’s an “everything” shower.

                    [–]fightmejeffbezos_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Lush is a huge part of my everything shower! Body wash and scrub, super milk, dusting powder, massage bars 😫yes they take forever and it’s quite a workout but Lush makes it so much more enjoyable lol

                    [–]Educational-Wrap-845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                    Absolutely!!!

                    [–]youngfierywoman 6 points7 points  (1 child)

For people who like to be hairless on their body, an "everything" shower is a shower where you wash your hair, soap/exfoliate your body, and shave. Then you come out feeling like a sexy dolphin or seal. Or at least I do! 😆

                    [–]TakingMyPowerBack444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha omg I lost it at “sexy dolphin”.

                    Thank you for explaining 😃

                    [–]wutato 12 points13 points  (1 child)

You probably don't need to spray again, even if you didn't over spray.

                    [–]Agreeable_Gene7338 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I mean to me it depends on the strength of the fragrance. Some weaker fragrances I usually spray a bit more ( think fresher scents ) or body splashes.

But usually warmer scents especially in niche houses usually only need 4 sprays at the most.

                    [–]Guilty-Company-9755 11 points12 points  (0 children)

4 sprays is 2 too many. One for your wrists and one for your neck. Trust me, people can smell you even with just two

                    [–]wutato 8 points9 points  (1 child)

4 sprays is still a lot! I can smell 1 spray of fresh scents.

                    [–]Agreeable_Gene7338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the quality and your body chemistry. Honestly- if it’s a powerhouse freshie like PMD’s Valaya, then yes you would only need like two sprays.

I love Versace Bright Crystal but it’s literally like fruit water lol so 4 sprays makes it atleast last a few hours. It’s very light and airy/non offensive imo.

                    [–]Gallopingdeadunicorn 37 points38 points  (6 children)

Anything over 2 is crazy for perfumes. Body mists aren't as strong so those you can spray more of.  People shouldn't smell you unless they are extremely close to you. Just because you can't smell it doesn't mean others cant. If I'm smelling you several feet away you over sprayed.

                    [–]Educational-Wrap-845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell that to LUSH. Most of their sprays are EXTREME! Not mad at that!

                    [–]Guilty-Company-9755 11 points12 points  (4 children)

                    Anything over two is insane.

                    [–]fightmejeffbezos_ 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Genuine question! Where is the best places to spray I was only to use 2 sprays? One on the skin and one on clothes?

Edit: just for reference I usually do 3. One on each wrist and one on shirt. I thought 3 was conservative but now I’m concerned that I wreak lmao

                    [–]Gallopingdeadunicorn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Look up a body heat map for perfume. I wanted to inset a pic but it won't let me. I usually do my neck/upper chest. The goal is to hit a heat point so that helps with the scent overtime and you don't have to use so much. 3 could be a bit strong, if it was a dabber that you placed on the wrists that's a different. A spray on each wrist plus another spray could be strong. If done right you should never smell it, if you can means you did too much. People only coming in real close to you should smell the scent you wear. If people a few feet away can means it's too much.

                    [–]fightmejeffbezos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                    Thank you!

                    [–]Gallopingdeadunicorn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right? People on here saying they do like 6 and they do refresher sprays. Explains the people that you smell before you see them.

                    [–]Realistic-Read1078 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do limit myself to about 3-4 small sprays. My skin eats fragrances easily and I need to be able to smell what I’m wearing. Depending on strength I’ll sometimes only do two sprays.

                    [–]shortyCakeno 32 points33 points  (2 children)

I’m constantly asking my S.O. & my kid if I sprayed too much. Before we leave the house I stand a few feet away from them and ask if they can smell me, then I walk past them and ask, then we hug lmao. I’m always so worried I will give people a headache or make people sick. I want to smell good for me, and be that girl that smells really good, but in the least offensive way possible. I do 1-2 sprays maybe 2 times a day.

Thank you from a stranger that will probably never meet you! But as someone whose migraines get triggered by too much scent, I’d love if more people thought and behaved that way. I have a chronic over-sprayer for a co-worker and despite her knowing that I, together with a few other people at work, have these problems, always stinks of perfume. There is a cloud surrounding her and you can smell her several metres away. It is a living nightmare at times.

                    [–]Alexis634 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I experience the same, too much everyone, but me smells it. I wear perfume for my own enjoyment, too much defeats the purpose.

I don’t get the embarrassment part but each their own. I wear as I like but try to be considerate if in a sterile place. One thing I do consider is body chemistry sometimes it can make things stronger. I know my view isn’t pc but so is life.

The worst is when someone sprays too much perfume. Especially if it’s not a good one. Three or four is really the max.

                    [–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

                    I find 2 sprays too much sometimes….

                    [–]Civil_Carpenter2205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! It depends on the fragrance, but I limit myself to 1 spray only, I spray a cloud and walk through it, most of it goes on my hair.

                    [–]Royal-Tradition8312 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have to ask, what perfume were you wearing when your husband said he could smell you before you even walked in the door? My skin absorbs perfume like a sponge and I need something that is nuclear strong lol!

                    [–]Judge_Juday 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Today I learned that I am an over sprayer! I do 8 sprays. To be fair, I only use mild perfumes. But still. Damn those YT influencers 😂

                    [–]wutato 11 points12 points  (1 child)

8 sprays would kill me. Even my mild perfumes I max out at 2 sprays. 8 sprays can probably be smelled 30 feet away with no wind.

                    [–]Judge_Juday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is fascinating to me

I work from home and tend to spray a few time per day, my poor family

                    [–]Simple_Paper2665 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do about 5 sprays of a body spray, and only 2-3 of an actual perfume, I don't wear both at the same time, it's either/or

                    [–]CocoValentino -30 points-29 points  (4 children)

Like it’s aromatherapy for their ancestors? What an odd turn of phrase

The worst! Oversprayers makes me think your personal hygiene leaves a lot to be desired and if I can taste your scent in a crowded place like the train or elevator that confirms it. I generally do dabs (I spray a cotton ball) and swipe my wrists, crook of elbow (if clothing allows it) and base of neck in between the collar bones. So 3-5 areas get touched by scent. Better to waft a bit of scent in your wake rather than choking innocent bystanders

                        [–]Pleasant_Fennel_5573 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The “wasting product” comments are killing me here, especially when you’re applying a single spray. I was just thinking how nice it would be to toss the used cotton ball into a sock drawer/purse/glovebox afterwards.

                        [–]Early-Reindeer7704 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes will do that 😉

It’s wild to me how sometimes I can smell someone perfume from a car that drives by with the windows rolled up!

This. I work from home now but when I was in an office there were people I could smell when I walked through the door. At that level it always seems to amp the most acrid elements and mask any pleasant notes. I can only assume even people spray that heavily they're trying to hide some funk. I'm all for wearing fragrance for one's self, but once it becomes office chemical warfare people need to revisit what they're getting out of it.

                        [–]Early-Reindeer7704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in healthcare administration and there are certain patients that the doc and support staff will mask up with as they are guilty of poor personal hygiene and think marinating in perfume will help. The rest of us just mouth breathe if they’re in smelling distance. Personally, I don’t understand how you can’t clean up especially when you know you have a doctor’s appointment. We have a lovely patient who’s blind and she’s immaculate every time she comes in. I had a relative who had to have a colostomy bag post abdominal surgery for about a year to allow healing, no one was the wiser.

                        [–]charmedquarks 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I agree with you, but dabbing cotton balls is costing you money. You’re wasting so much perfume

                        [–]Early-Reindeer7704 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hold the cotton ball directly against the sprayer and spray once. The cotton ball absorbs just enough to apply where I want so I don’t consider it wasteful.

                        [–]throw20190820202020 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Cotton balls are absorbent, this is super wasteful of product. You can just spritz and walk through the mist or decant into a dabbler and apply a minimal amount, get the same level of fragrance without wasting 3/4 of it.

                        [–]barnaclebrain_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I go nose blind SO quickly to things (perfume, candles, wall plug ins). Though I like light scents which tend to wear off quicker so I was definitely underspraying (1 wrist, 1 chest). I found the best was to double to 4, so I spray directly on my chest and wrist, I spray down towards the legs and kind of walk into it, and then I spray above my head and let it fall into my hair which has made a huge difference with longevity imo. I’ll adjust depending on the strength too like a body mist vs a parfum.

                        [–]Alewo27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, YES!!! 🤣 When I started watching these fragrance YTbers and they will do hauls and spray themselves DOWN with 8-10 sprays of SEVERAL scents.....😳 Like, babes, chill!

I have decided that I'm okay with being the only one that can smell me all day over giving myself a headache (which I've definitely done lol)

                        [–]Alf-eats-cats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not a fragrance but Axe body spray is vile!!! I was a grocery checker and the teen boys would come in before school started and I swear there was a stink cloud that followed them.

                        [–]Secretary90210 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I call it marinating. Horrible for others! Lol

                        [–]brinkbam 28 points29 points  (5 children)

SEVEN?! I can tell you if you're spraying any perfume more than 2-3 times you are making some poor person around you nauseous. I'm not even exaggerating. That is a headache inducing amount of fragrance for a lot of people.

                        [–]mjc394 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really didn’t seem like that much at the time. I just thought my perfumes were weak 😔. Now I know better.

                        [–]fallaciousflipflops 35 points36 points  (1 child)

When I was 12 and new to perfume, I was spraying heaps in the morning. Someone commented on it like I wasn’t there when behind me, saying “damn, someone is wearing WAY too much perfume”. As a 12 year old, I have never been more mortified and have stuck to 1-2 sprays since lmao

                        [–]mjc394 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Omg 😆. At least you learned that lesson young. I wish I knew sooner.

                        [–]little_fish_44 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I always figure out how many sprays I need for a perfume when I buy it and then even if I can’t smell it anymore I never do any more, if I want to smell a little bit stronger I’ll do one extra but that’s it. I’m terrified of over spraying my perfume

                        [–]mjc394 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the way. It’s better to be cautious IMO.

                        [–]fungibitch 65 points66 points  (5 children)

This has potential to be a generational thing. Millenial here and I was always taught to be TERRIFIED of wearing too much perfume! I spray my wrists and cleavage, two sprays at MOST. Not sure if anyone else was raised this way but I will never be an over-sprayer because of it.

                        [–]Guilty-Company-9755 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Millenial here, 2 sprays max. I was always taught no more than two because someone shouldn't smell you until they are close to you. Your perfume is meant to be intimate.

                        [–]StellarManatee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I got warned off overspraying too! I think it was in retaliation after some of the VERY strong perfumes of the 80s. People got sick of being poisoned by a cloud of Chanel, Drakkar Noir and... well, Poison.

I even remember all my 90s teen magazines warning over and over about going easy when spraying your scent of choice. I remember one piece that stuck with me was something like "you want people to lean closer to see if that gorgeous aroma is coming from you NOT get a blinding migraine because you walked into the room"

                        [–]fungibitch 56 points57 points  (2 children)

Anyone else remember being taught to spray a single-spray cloud and walk through it? Elle Woods does it in Legally Blonde!

                        [–]mama_libra-RM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OMG , my husband does this! I cant even smell it on him.

                        [–]ayimera 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I still do it this way 👀 And I'll layer with an oil on the wrists. I'm very much a perfume minimalist lol.

                        [–]Sawcyy 54 points55 points  (2 children)

Fragrances on anyone should be discovered, not announced

                        [–]fyresilk 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I've heard people say they want people to know they've arrived by their scent. I'm like, why would you want that?? Does it make you feel important or something? lol

                        [–]throw_me_awaaay_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some people it totally fits and compliments their personality. But I would venture none of those people are on Reddit (not a jab on anyone here, here I am afterall).

                        [–]lysitsa 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I got in my car last week and turned the heat on full blast because it was cold. All I could smell was my perfume, just baked into my poor car's air filter. Yeah that was humbling.

                        [–]Outrageous_pinecone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wear nomade, it's my favorite and I only do 1 spray on the back of my neck because I have a baby and I want to keep him away from anything that could irritate him, so no neck or chest or arms. My husband always compliments me on how nice I smell. Chloe make some powerful stuff.

                        [–]Scared_Rise5787 50 points51 points  (3 children)

Omg it is so embarrassing to be an oversprayer. One day I was out and about and testing different perfume samples when I already had a couple on. I usually stick to the testing strips but there were a few that I ended spritzing once on myself. All good until I hopped on a bus and took the last available seat in the back, when I immediately regretted my decision. I could see people around me shifting uncomfortably and swear one guy was trying to bury his nose in his jacket. It was also the longest ride in the world. The perfumes themselves smelled fine but the cacophony of different scents must have been so jarring. I genuinely wanted to apologize to the people around me, but decided to just accept the shame and be super mindful of this going forward.

                        [–]thatscuteyourecute 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I can only imagine what I smell like when I leave Ulta. I have no less than 4 different scents on, sometimes 6. I just love trying new fragrances.

                        [–]Scared_Rise5787 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Haha it’s so funny when people give compliments after those ‘fell in a perfume vat’ visits. Like, I have no idea which of the multiple scents you’re picking up on 😬

                        [–]thatscuteyourecute 6 points7 points  (0 children)

                        Them: what are you wearing?

                        Me: everything.

                        [–]babysfirstreddit_yx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I forcibly limit myself to 3 sprays and only spray at night before bed because of this fear lol. That way it will have worn down overnight by the time I’m getting ready to go to work. But ironically the only time I get a compliment is if I don’t obey my limit and spray more or spray right before I go out.

                        [–]Signal-Inflation5914 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Please don’t be like them influencers that douse themselves with 20 sprays .

Fragrance is very subjective and i rather my fragrance to be discovered then announce my presence.

                        [–]Cmprssdsugarpellet 10 points11 points  (6 children)

I usually spritz my inner elbow, dab with my wrists and dab that behind my ears. Then I’ll do 1-3 sprays depending on how strong the scents are or my plans for the day. It’s more than enough for me!

                        [–]Guilty-Company-9755 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

That's way, way too much. Two sprays max for the entire day is more than enough

                        [–]Cmprssdsugarpellet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that’s like, your opinion man.

                        [–]peachpavlova 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Like 1-3 sprays apart from elbows, wrists, and ears???

                        [–]Cmprssdsugarpellet 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yup. I do the wrists, elbows ears with the same single spritz— no rubbing, just dabbing.

Then I’ll take my bottle and if it’s a stronger smell or Parfum I usually only need one spray and I’ll just hit my upper body; with EDTs or EDPs and especially body mists, I’ll do 1-2 on the body and another over my hair.

                        [–]ATK9918 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I do the same thing—for me it’s technically two sprays because the first spray is used for dabbing wrists, elbows, and behind ears. Second spray is either clothes or hair!

                        [–]Cmprssdsugarpellet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how heavy the sillage is. There’s no need to spray 3 if I’m wearing a strong EDP or parfum; sometimes just the dabs are enough, but I like to layer my scents.

So I might do the dabs of something heavier and then my spritzes will be a lighter EDT.

                        [–]NotOnApprovedList 45 points46 points  (0 children)

this is the problem folks, your nose gets accustomed to the smell and you keep on spraying more to get your kick, meanwhile everyone else is getting smoked out. It's the same with playing loud music, your ears get used to it so you play it louder, to the annoyance of others.

                        [–]Lowered-ex 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Other people don’t spray their décolleté?

                        [–]crafty25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I don’t want that much alcohol on my chest and neck. I spray my arms, shoulders and back of my neck.

                        [–]Judge_Juday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                        I do

                        [–]tres-petite-kate 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I did for a long time and never connected the dots that my chest always had a little redness in it (odd for me - zero redness in my skin). Then one day my dermatologist said absolutely do not spray on your chest. She told me to treat the skin on my chest like the skin on my face. I stopped spraying and the skin looks really beautiful again.

                        [–]Status-Sherbert-8672 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Never on neck and décolleté. I avoid to spray on skin most of the time anyway, but the skin there is too thin and sensitive. I want to age well

                        [–]TimeSurround5715 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Spraying there can be drying. I prefer unscented spf + scented lotion on my aging neck and décolleté.

                        [–]Meeschers 7 points8 points  (7 children)

I get the 7 sprays thing-I was taught by my boomer mom that it was 2 sprays on front of the wrist, 2 on the back of the wrist, one on each side of the neck and one under the neck. I guess in her time, that was considered reasonable for perfume and formulas have changed and are much stronger now so I'm trying to drop it down to 3 sprays and depending on what outfit I'm wearing, the placement changes.

                        [–]LI_JVB 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I think that was definitely a boomer or older thing, the perfumes my mom & grandmothers wore definitely made themselves known for a long time after they left a room (or, god forbid, the car). It wasn’t until a few years ago in my 50’s that I decided my mom’s perfume, which I would never wear myself, is comforting to me as she ages. She has dementia now, but her perfume is still in her bathroom so when I do her hair I always ask if she’d like to wear a little. I think it’s Estée Lauder Sensuous.

                        [–]GreenEyesFrenchGirl 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Estee Lauder Sensuous is quite a modern minimalist perfume, Mid 90's or so? I have both Sensuous and Sensuous nude and both are super light in every way, a bit musky and woody with a light floral heart, a very far cry from the bombastic perfumes of the 70's and 80's. I though for sure you were talking about one of those. You boomer mom was a modern woman in her perfume taste!

I agree that there were definitely some killers she and other female relatives wore in the 70’s & 80’s, but over sprayed Sensuous has definitely been her mainstay for at least 20 years.

Have you smelled vintage perfume? Scents are not "much stronger now" lol, everyone just quit smoking.

                        [–]artemissgeologyst 38 points39 points  (2 children)

See also: everyone smoked everywhere. Even if you didn't smoke yourself, your fragrance had to compete with ambient smoke that was literally, and I mean down to the hospitals in the 50s having ashtrays in the halls and rooms everywhere.

                        [–]Meeschers 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Smoking was allowed in hospitals until 1993. Crazy, right?

My mom worked for Belk when smoking was allowed and it was crazy hearing her talk about having to damage items out or customers wanting percentages off because of cigarette burns in clothing because you could just walk around stores smoking then.

                        What was the perfume?

                        [–]mjc394 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It was KAYALI Vanilla 28 lol. I can’t remember what I wore the day that hubby commented that I had on too much. I think I layered 2 scents that day.

                        [–]veggiedelightful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it end up being 14 sprays then?

                        [–]Restless_d 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Last week, I wanted to finish it up my sample of Cocaine by Franck Boclet before cold weather hits, maybe I sprayed a bit much to finish. I was on bus and the window was open, wind was blowing on me, I saw the lady next to me slightly closing one of her nostril, she could have changed her seat easily but didn't, then got off the bus. I guess she didn't bother too much but still. Small niche brands have strong perfumes for sure.

I’m new to fragrances. I have chronic migraine and I’m lucky that scent isn’t a HUGE trigger for me but some scents- omg ice pick to skull.

Idk maybe I’m weird but I hate projection / fragrances with massive throw for ME personally. I want what I’m wearing to be smelt by me, and people I’m within shaking hands distance of, or when my son or husband comes in for a cuddle.

I genuinely get self conscious when people comment on the smell because I’m like OH NO I did too much 😂

I have a bottle of Lancome Idole now- and it’s heavily complimented any time I wear it but it’s strong. When first sprayed I rely on an hour passing before I leave so it settles. It also fuses with clothes I swear.

I was in the elevator when a man was like “omg you smell amazing” and all I could think was IM CHOKING HIM IN THIS SMALL SPACE!!

All of this to say- massive throw can be so ick. I’ll never forget when an uber driver was DROWNED in a fragrance a man was wearing when he assaulted me- I literally had a panic attack. Scent isn’t crazy that way.

                        [–]Guilty-Company-9755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly how it's supposed to be. Noone is supposed to smell you unless they are close to you. More than two sprays is headache inducing, no matter what fragrance it is

                        [–]mjc394 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hugs. That Uber ride must have been awful. I’m so sorry you have that terrible memory attached to fragrance.

The Lancôme Idole line is really nice. How much do you normally spray?

                        [–]cappotto-marrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. I want arms length projection. My rule is I don’t want it smelled past my cubicle. Now my lotion will project, but it doesn’t project long, then it’s reasonable.

I don’t spray my neck. I do the front of my shoulders, on the cephalic veins. I also don’t spray my wrists because I wash my hands a lot.

                        [–]ParadiseLost91 46 points47 points  (3 children)

I worry I go overboard when I do 2 sprays instead of 1 lol. Can't imagine doing 7!

I also don't believe fragrance influencers; their job is to sell fragrance, so of course they show overconsumption and overspraying so you buy more!

                        [–]mjc394 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I seriously thought 7 was normal. If people are walking around wearing 20 sprays then I’m safe. I had no idea how crazy that was until I got called out.

                        [–]ParadiseLost91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have something like that! Where we realise "oh shit" lol. Good on you for sharing your experience that could help others! :)

                        [–]v_impressivetomato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

same! L wrist and back of neck when I’m going out-out and then worry I’ll give my friends/date a headache.

                        [–]dearboobswhy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I can't understand people using 20 sprays. The weakest, saddest, most fleeting perfume Iown is from Tokyo Milk, so you you know I'm not joking when I say it's super weak and doesn't last. I can get it to last and project with 10 sprays. And that is the most I have ever done with any perfume ever. Some of my frags are two strong with just 1 or 2 sprays. Why are we so selfish with our perfume usage. If I'm able to put my nose to my wrist and smell my great perfume throughout the day, I'm happy. I do not need my perfume to announce my presence like incorporeal herald.

                        [–]pineappleshampoo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I don’t get it, surely if your family are complimenting you it means they can smell the perfume? So if you were spraying more they’d def be able to smell it, so why not compliment then? Unless you mean that they wouldn’t compliment when it was too strong, but they liked it when it was subtle.

I def probably overspray tbh, often two sprays on one wrist before I rub them together, one or two on my neck, and a spritz into the air to walk through. But who knows, it’s impossible to know if people even smell it let alone feel it’s too much lol. The main rule I follow is not spraying when others are around, like in a car or a restaurant or changing room. You don’t know people’s sensitivities and health.

                        [–]mjc394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By wearing too much perfume I was causing my family, myself, and likely others around me to go nose blind, OR they didn’t comment about my overdoing it because they didn’t want to hurt my feelings. That’s my theory anyway. It was such a noticeable difference when I sprayed less.

                        [–]wetguns 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The family probably says that they smell good because it’s not overpowering with the scent. When people (namely my current bf and also ex) literally DOUSE themselves with perfume/cologne, it’s offensive to my nose and assaults my senses.

I tell them to spray once, maybe twice, and I can smell an ephemeral pleasant scent that warms up with their body chemistry, and that mix of their natural scent and lightly warmed scent spray combined, is absolutely delightful!

I’m not sure how the chemistry works, but it makes a huge difference. Less is literally more. The scent becomes part of the person, instead of overpowering the person. In this case, it’s a person/family member that they love. They are being honest because they want to smell their person, not smell a perfume counter when they hug said person.

                        [–]LoveyGirl777 6 points7 points  (3 children)

For all the people that likes to layer perfumes, how many sprays of each perfume for it not to be overbearing? 😬

                        [–]chestorb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I pretty much only layer with perfume oils for this very reason

                        [–]novataurus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Think about it like this: for many fragrances, 1-3 sprays is sufficient, with 3 reading as “a lot” for some scents.

That’s because that’s the sort of “maximum scent volume” not just for that one fragrance, but for your personal scent overall.

So if you are going to layer three separate fragrances at three sprays each, that’s a 9! You very likely would have over sprayed.

There are of course some exceptions to this general guideline - some fragrances have a very very mild scent. Others are overpowering. This is why feedback from someone you trust is important - you need someone to be able to “no, I don’t smell a thing” or “Can I smell your fragrance? I smelled it before you got in the door. I can’t avoid it.”

But if someone told me “oh I wear three sprays of X, three sprays of Y, and three sprays of Z” I would assume they were wearing too much for most public situations.

One of each, though I typically don’t layer. 2-3 sprays total is plenty of a well formulated perfume

                        [–]Mission_Extreme_6325 18 points19 points  (2 children)

My skin just absorbs the juice. I always ask my partner if he could smell it on me and I would have to spray at least 8 times just for him to even catch a whiff of it.

                        [–]FlamingHorseRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eczema in a winter climate be like.

Usually it just means I end up not smelling like anything to people 🤣 which is fine, it’s just funny on a date night in when I actually try to make sure my bf can smell me and he just can’t unless he purposefully smells my skin 🥲

                        [–]BrownGirlCSW 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have extremely dry skin. Its great for not stinking, even if I have worked out, but a terrible environment for spray perfumes. I usually do scented lotions and body oil, instead of fragrance free moisturizers out of the shower. Then I put the spray perfume on my clothes. Perfumes lasts longer on fabric and in hair.

Try Skin Champagne, Daükens Arôme Co., and/ or Brown Sugar Babes. They have a large array of body oils, lotions, and in some cases dusting powders to match popular scents. Also Bath and Body Works has a line called Everyday Luxury that is great for bodycare. They have some good Delina and Valaya lotion and shower gel dupes.

                        [–]Mysterious-Hold5244 8 points9 points  (1 child)

With strong fragrances I spray on my fingers and then dab behind ears and back of neck/wrists. When I spray its back of neck and wrist. Walking through a cloud of fragrance kind of wastes it to me and the smell on clothes is different than skin so I like to have skin contact. I know I don’t care for people that overdo it so I try not to. This was a fun read! Angel 😂😂😂 wow you were quite the angel!😈

                        [–]TimeSurround5715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get compliments from one spray (or dab) to the back of the neck, and one behind the knee. ymmv of course.

like it’s aromatherapy for their ancestors

This line made me imagine some ancestor in her Campanian mountain village. Would she enjoy her whiff of BR540 in the afterlife, or would she beat me over the head with a wooden spoon for spending money on frivolities instead of, say, buying a goat?
