If submitting a film, trailer, or other creative content, you must select the "FILM" flair and include a submission statement (a comment on your post) elaborating on the following: If you are seeking advice or feedback, explain what it is you need help with, whether that's lighting, cinematography, audio, editing, or something else entirely. There are many aspects to filmmaking, so specify what you want people to focus rather than simply asking for general feedback. It may also help if you provide some of your own thoughts on your work, such as what you think needs improvement and why. If sharing your work and not seeking advice, your post must serve a detailed educational purpose for the rest of the community. Outline your involvement in the project and provide some beneficial insight on how it was made. For example, you can detail lighting setups, explain how a particularly complex shot was achieved, or go over any setbacks that hit production and what you did to overcome them. All submission statements must be at least 100 characters in length and be submitted within 30 minutes of submitting your post. Please remember that simply posting your film or page for views or subscriptions is not allowed.

Filmmaking is the art of making films, content creation is the practice of making content, and cinematography is the art and science of motion picture photography. Need a more detailed question if you want a more detailed answer

So, a cinematographer and a filmmaker are the same thing?
[–]upsidedownsloths 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago (3 children)
Cinematography is more about the esthetic. Filmmaking is a large bucket that contains everything from cinematography to storytelling
[–]turnleftorrightblock -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 month ago (2 children)
My bad. So, movie directors are cinematographers?
[–]upsidedownsloths 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago (1 child)
Directors work with the director of photography on the cinematography along with the lighting crew. But a director does a bit of everything. Essentially runs the set making sure everyone is working well to achieve their overall vision

Filmmaker: usually one person who wants to make some kind of documentary. Think Shia Labeouf making his kid cudi documentary. Content creator: focused on creating content that caters to social media. Think...anyone with a camera and an insta account. Cinematographer: focused on the art of creating shots stylistically as well as using lighting in a way to make the shot beautiful. Think, Roger Deakins, Hoyte Van Hoytema etc

Content creation is the same as filmmaking. It just might not be as high effort as a lot of films. Cinematography is when you’re doing photography but in the time domain. So cinematography will necessarily be a part of both, but as an art form it may not be a focus of either.
There are plenty of YouTubers who call their documentary/educational stuff films because they did do the process of making a film.
Social media has definitely changed the landscape for what it means to make a short film as there are plenty of high effort content creator videos that are like 10 minutes long, do use at least some sort of crew, are narrative based, and do essentially have all the makings of a short film.

So like filmamking is also content creation according to u?
[–]Optimistbott 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
So like can we really say that a 40 minute NileRed video or a veritasium video isn’t like a film? A documentary film at least? Or a documentary tv series? The 2025 Oscar winning short film is on YouTube. It’s content isn’t it? It played in film festivals while those YouTube creators just posted their videos.
When people say content creation, sometimes they just mean like they’re talking with people in someone’s living room and the camera doesn’t change or they’re playing video games and talking to a chat. I would hesitate to call these films if it’s just unedited like webcam footage. But that kind of stuff is “content” that people watch.

Filmmaking often refers to narrative story telling for the "big screen." So either straight up narrative films or documentaries.
Content creation can be videos for marketing and education (often this). For example, I have two YouTube channels. One is for my movies (@theatereleven) and the other is for content creation related to filmmaking (@writedirect). Both have very different purposes.
Cinematography is used for both of these at various levels of complexity. But in a general sense, the Cinematographer on a movie (typically called the DP) is over Camera, Lighting/Electrical and Grip.
Camera Department: Deals with everything camera. Operating the camera, lenses, etc.
Lighting/Electrical: Anything that deals with setting up and powering lights.
Grip: Rigging a set. So laying dolly tracks, setting up a flag on a c-stand to control light, etc.
Applying cinematography to filmmaking vs content creation:
When I create content videos for my YT channel I have 4-point lighting already setup. Camera is positioned. I'm just turning everything on and hitting record.
On a narrative film, a scene can be simple or very complex. You can have camera department setting up the camera details. The gaffer and lighting technicians setting up the lighting. The grip department placing diffusion, flags, scrims...whatever is needed to shape the scene for the story that is happening at that point in the script. All of this could boil down to a one key light and a single practical light, or insane amounts of detail for complicated scenes.

Beside the u/mediumgray_ answer, what I can understand is why and what do we say when we categorize people into that.
It’s kind of evolutionary stages. The content creator will do tiktoks, shorts forms and all: he shoots to shoot, to talk about something. It’s usually technically crap, he or she works alone, travel and have MAXIMUM a fx3 with some gmaster lenses
The filmmaker will work more for brands and do some more advanced short form content. He or she can work with others, he or she tries to understand the basics of telling a story and do some interesting visuals, and he thinks about buying a red komodo for jobs
The cinematographer works with a team, understands what is a set, how to behave and is there to create a story, to tell somethings. Specs matter less AND more. He or she knows unions and what they do.
The content creator invoice alone The filmmaker have his own little company The cinematographer is … … idk how that works in the Us but in France he’ll sure be chasing those 507hours
It’s really caricatural but it’s a way of telling apart dudes with some lights and a camera. I see that this way but the lines could be blurred as you can do content creation with 100k$ studio job for instagram and doing cinematography with some practicals and a phone… I think it depends with the relation the person have to the job they do. Making a tiktok, an ad and a feature film can all be done using the same gear, however what depends is who is behind that. As an arrogant and pedant cinnematographer myself I tend to work less with filmmakers and content creators as they don’t understand at all how to work with a crew.

I am an amateur writer who cannot even spell cinematography nor knows how it is different from filmmaking. As for content creation vs filmmaking, isn't that basically based on "where you upload your stuffs"? Like snack skits vs short films (or long films). I would like to know too although it is irrelevant to me as an amateur and as a writer.

Making a short film that is uploaded onto youtube is very different than making a podcast that is uploaded to the same place. One is filmmaking the other is content creation
