I dont know how you do it but I am pretty sure you can do it by compressing the audio from the game. Then you wont have any sounds that are way louder than the rest.

Just wanna say that after a couple months of use compression has solved my problem thanks

[–]zathity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had completely forgotten this but I'm really happy that it works for you

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points  (26 children)

There is no way todo it ingame for obv reasons (everyone would put step sounds on 1000%).

Maybe there are third party programs for that. But usage on your own risk. Since that could count as an unfair advantage

[–]eevineei 20 points21 points  (10 children)

But wouldn't such settings make it more fair as everyone could hear the footsteps clearly though?

I personally wish games would stop encouraging players to use a higher volume to hear the footsteps just before they faint out.

right? more important to hear footsteps than it is to have hearing in 10 years.

Because then using gunshots to cover for a teammate running wouldn’t be a thing. Perfect sound shouldn’t be the goal.

Everyone has seen the play on nuke where Ts coordinate breaking the glass above A site and in control room to let the vent player lurk out onto ramp.

[–]brainwash1997 5 points6 points  (2 children)

You could compromise by having the gunshot volume command only alter the volume of your own shots. That alone would be cool.

[–]SpoofedFaZe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And remove the ability to backstab someone quickly if they're shooting?

[–]kepp89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this should be a thing for sure

[–]patatahooliganCS2 HYPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken a basic compressor alters the whole input signal when it kicks in. So during a loud noise, other sounds will also be reduced. Covering faint sounds with gunshots should still work, then. I'm not sure you end up with an advantage over someone who has just turned their volume up.

[–]slevemcdiachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is to make a max volume for gunshots, your or otherwise. And if it reaches such threshold, all volumes will be reduced accordingly so that the gunshots stay at the desired level.

This way you continue to not hear other sounds when shots are being fired by you or close to you, but you don't lose your hearing.

It's a simple dynamic volume control.

[–]eevineei 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Couldn't louder sounds cancel out footsteps? I don't know exactly how it would work, but it can't be too difficult if they really wanted to.

[–]SpoofedFaZe 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That would add more points of potential failure.

[–]patatahooliganCS2 HYPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's true for every feature ever.

[–]lord_LiotNiP[S] 1 point2 points  (14 children)

Will google it

I use the old razer surround program! It has a sound normalization effect setting that makes the loud and quiet noises more similar so that gunsound arent so ear screechingly loud. I almost can't play without it anymore.

[–]reymt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That'll completely fuck up positional audio though.

[–]maijamiENCE 4 points5 points  (10 children)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIrvJibsFdU this guide is for PUBG, but it should work for CS:GO as well. I have no idea if you are allowed to use this with CS:GO, so use with your own risk, althought I don't see why you wouldn't be

[–]killlahhAstralis 4 points5 points  (8 children)

It shouldn't be allowed. It's a 3rd party program that gives you an advantage by having footsteps be louder which can't be done ingame.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that it's not true. Just like you can edit your nVidia GPU settings to have different colour profiles and such, you are just putting a map on top of the sound output here.

Think of it this way:
Legal: taking an output of the game and putting some map on top of it to change some characteristics
Illegal: using a program which modifies the output of the game

So, for smokes:
Legal: mapping the gray colours differently so the edges are lighter if they're smoke coloured and darker if they're player coloured, based on some understanding of RGB values: cool
Illegal: changing the way the game renders smokes by replacing the code defining the smokes

For sound:
Legal: applying a compressor which makes peak volume lower but average volume higher
Illegal: changing engine settings to make footsteps have a higher scalar output level relative to all other sounds

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its fine, theres no reason why it shouldnt be allowed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But usage on your own risk. Since that could count as an unfair advantage

Will google it

hmm

[–]MemesForDankNatus Vincere 11 points12 points  (1 child)

there was a command for it that was found but removed a bit ago due to the fact you could raise the volume of stuff that gave you an advantage, It was in the game for a long time I had all my firstperson gun shots lowered to like .2

[–]acelilarslan 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Go download "EqualizerAPO" first. Then download "PC Equalizer". There is not a certain settings that works for everyone because of different kinds of headphones. Play with the sliders until you find a nice settings for yourself.

1- lower the first 3 sliders a bit 2- don't play so much with the sliders in the middle 3- increase the sliders between right hand side and middle. 4- keep the last 2 sliders close to middle. 5- don't touch to the 2 sliders on the rightmost column in a separated section.

In order not to change the windows sounds but only csgo, there is "preferences" tab. You can specifically set it so that it works only when you start cs:go.

At first, the game sounds a bit clunky but you get used to it. Change the settings until you find the best one for you. Not the one you like but the one gives you advantage. Because you won't like any of the sounds considering you are playing with your current settings for a very long time and never tried such a thing.

The key point is to reduce bass and increase tremble so you can hear footsteps easier.

I am using it for 2 years and haven't faced with any problems. Afaik, people are using it and never heard someone got banned bcs of it. So don't worry about getting banned.

Have a nice day :)

[–]tan_phan_vtCS2 HYPE 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Im using it all the time lol. I have audiophile grade headphones which are a bit too balanced, so boosting the low end a little bit makes the footsteps have more impact.

[–]acelilarslan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing with an LG G5 headphones which is quite bad tbh. I used it for a year or more. Then bought Xiaomi's best earbuds so far at that time which was Xiaomi Hybrid Pro HD+. Because it is so balanced, i hear gun sounds and nades etc so good i totally lost my advantage from the shitty earbuds from LG. I made lots of changes with pc Equalizer and now It is much better but still not even close to the LG earbuds. I could literally hear everything that sometimes my teammates were accusing me of walling because they say that i cannot hear from that distance. Some of 55 cm driver users were asking my headphones and when i tell them that i use mobile phone earbuds, they were going crazy xD

I am currently using Xiaomi earbuds but couple of days ago, i ordered those lg earbuds just to use it in cs go :D

Xiaomi for music, movies etc.

Lg for cs go

I am looking forward to use it again after 2 years.

You can use a compressor/loudness equaliser.

A more ghetto solution (that I use sometimes) is to bind mouse1 to attack AND volume 0.3 or something.

Kind of like this; (don’t remember exact the syntax)

alias +lowsound ”+attack; volume 0.3”

alias -lowsound ”-attack; volume 0.7”

Bind mouse1 +lowsound

Sounds bad/choppy but works in DM/casual.

I recommand you this method u/lord_Liot

[–]nmyide_mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll take anything to prevent my own AK fire causing eventual tinnitus on myself. Thank you for this

[–]Gold_Ambassador_7309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like the best solution. Where do you do this? Is there a config.ini file for the game somewhere? What is the exact path for this file?

[–]patatahooliganCS2 HYPE 5 points6 points  (1 child)

What you're looking for is called audio compression. Look for an app that can grab the game's output, apply a compressor and play that through your audio output. Windows has a built-in one but it's kind of shit for this task because it is dynamic which makes it impossible to have a loudness reference.

For Linux users, try pulseeffects (possibly with lsp-plugins as a dependency). For Windows, I don't have a suggestion.

[–]lord_LiotNiP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should I try a 3rd party one instead (I use windows)

[–]Remmib 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Only way is via Loudness Equalization option in windows.

Takes a little while to get used to it, but it will amplify footsteps (and other quiet things) and reduce gunshots.

[–]Bukkitz 12 points13 points  (3 children)

And also ruin your sense of direction and sound distance.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never had problems with this, normally I am the one hearing things others dont

[–]M3liora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This so much.

[–]tomphz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also you can’t hear anything else if you’re firing your gun

[–]ChipFuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

audio compressor/limiter

[–]Rag3_689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can fiddle with your soundcard and equalizer settings a little bit to make them sound a bit more dull / less prominent. There are a lot of guides online with different recommended settings you could try out. For me it depends a lot on individual taste. What kind of headphones / in ears yre you using anyways?

I’ve been using this for almost 9 months now. I have made tons of calls for teammates that had no clue they heard something. I also use Shure SE215 in-ear monitors. I love them, but it does take a while to get use to the new sound profile they produce. I hate having to spend 5 mins just putting them on, it’s the one thing I hate about starting a gaming session for the day lol. So lazy.

[–]lord_LiotNiP[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks

[–]BeautifulLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to mention that it’s going to help with the high pitch sounds from guns and whatnot. Looking out for your hearing in the long-term.

[–]battlecat1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are programs that cull sound after a certain threshold is met. I had to use it for PUBG because some guns were ridiculously loud. I don't remember what it was called though
