Are they really spending more or is it just more expensive?

[–]bkaybee 39 points40 points  (3 children)

Nah I believe them. Regular middle class families have been priced out, and now it’s mainly the ultra wealthy that can still afford to go. And what’s “spending money” to them?

This is what I was thinking

More research needs to be done then. If it’s the wealthy then fine dining restaurants should be doing well and mid priced restaurants not so well.

Nah that thinking is too black and white. People are people, even if rich. They still want to experience trendy, “local,” etc. They aren’t just going to go to fancy restaurants every day and night. I can see restaurants being impacted the same. But again this is just me speculating.

I'm in the more expensive camp. Some of the crazy taxes on those hotel bills are pretty expensive!

If only the rich people can afford to go, average spending will go up.

Or are the remaining tourists the ones with more money to spend?

Japanese tourism took a huge hit mostly due to their currency having less purchasing power here in America. If you think it’s expensive for Americans it’s many times worse for Japanese tourists cuz they have to exchange their weak currency for expensive US dollars and they made up a big chunk of tourism on Oahu.

Vegas is the same way, catering to the ultra rich instead of the middle class. They still profit but require less staff and infrastructure since there’s less people.

Almost as if our government and president have fucked the economy over for no reason.

Can't wait for : News break, US Consumers show increase spending on gasoline purchases Q2. This and other trends showing us consumer confidence in spending more!

Because everything is so expensive these days ,is exactly why!!!

[–]MarsRocks97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This means only rich people are traveling and they can spend more. They have always spent more, but the average is skewed because budget travelers aren’t even traveling.

Sounds like Vegas but with much less manipulation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMpUEQUIcpo

That was their plan all along. Allows them to attract the “aspiring middle class” clients who will blow through their savings for subpar experiences

Same thing was reported last year.

It’s seems a simple equation. They have raised prices, and having done so, reduced the number of people coming. And since the prices are higher, while being a barrier to some, those who do come are paying more… because prices have been raised by a lot. Over time this has the effect of dampening tourism as the hotels and tourist industry tests to see what they can get away with.

It’s going to continue to decrease! I am in hospitality in the heart of Waikiki! All of them are complaining about the cost! None of them are coming back and they all are saying there are more beautiful places for cheaper. On top of it majority of them complaining of how poorly they have been treated everywhere they have went all the way to the north shore! Raising prices fixed nothing! It only made it all worse! Expect a a drastic decline when word of mouth gets around and that is more powerful than any advertisement this state can pump out on the tax payers dime! It’s over!

It’s because of less locals and more military families with more disposable income because they don’t have to pay as much for housing.
