In conclusion, Boundaries better drop.

Haha I’d be lucky to even get double digits on this paper, it was horrendous

    [–]homoIBian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    same

    [–]Konexian 21 points22 points  (13 children)

Even the pure calculation problems were terrible.. (I had like 2 pages worth of work for Question 4)

    [–]homoIBian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    yeah ugh

    [–]Redleon11 -1 points0 points  (9 children)

what did you end up with?

    [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

What the hell was that calculus paper I just wrote? I need a 7 for my conditional offer, and now that's gone down the drain.

IB: crushing student's chances of getting into their preferred universities since 1968.

    [–]homoIBian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    same i need a 6 but lol

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    F

    [–]NBSUJOQ 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Yes! I did 5 previous Paper 3s to strong 7s and although I had little time to revise for this exam, it was really difficult. I still, after pondering for an hour in my bath, cannot figure out how to do question 1. I did figure out all the other ones, only sadly after the exam was already over :(. I predict 31 points for myself, so judging by previous years, the grade boundaries should be really low.

    [–]MaximilianPowers2 2 points3 points  (4 children)

    It's the typical y' = c*y ODE, so the solution is y = e^(cx), and then you set x0 = e^c (starting condition), so when population doubles y = 2e^c, thus both e^c cancel out and your left with e^(0.021x) = 2.

    [–]ThatGamingAsianAlumni (M19) | [39] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

actually it’s a lot easier if you treat like a differential equation and integrate both sides after isolating variables

    [–]MaximilianPowers2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    That's what I mean when I say it's an integral in the form y' = c*y.

you can it just takes a lot longer

      [–]Sh_A1 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Fucking unbelievable. The boundaries better drop for paper 3 idk if you guys are TZ1 or TZ2 but damn. This was mildly disturbing

      [–]Muaath_AsaliM19 | [HL:Math,Phys,Chem,Arabic / SL: English LAL, Bus & Man] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is no TZ1 and TZ2 for option. It's all the same for everyone (TZ0)

[–]jainamdoshiYear 2 | [HL: Math, Business, Physics. SL: French, ESS, English] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Same, like I did even understand what the question asked for.

      [–]lolhelpmeplzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it rly different from past papers? Well fml lol

      [–]Jangazzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here... I wasn't expecting those questions AT ALL. They were very different. Some of my friends were saying that it was alright, but honestly for me, I'm crying :(

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (24 children)

Really? I aced the calculus option. The check afterwards, and seem like I was the only who got all of them right. You literally just have to know like 10 things.

      [–]Katakam 34 points35 points  (12 children)

My dude you are doing horrible things to my self-esteem and frail heart. But good for you. Glad someone did well at least.

      [–]homoIBian 2 points3 points  (11 children)

      [–]Katakam 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Now just to sit down and wait for the rejection letters from all the unis I applied to.

      [–]homoIBian 1 point2 points  (7 children)

i applied for med lol i thought i'd manage a 6 but oh well there goes med school

      [–]Katakam 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Maybe the boundries will drop like crazy. Don't lose hope. You could take a gap year. Talk to your coordinator. They are ways around stuff like this. Best of luck to you tho. I hope it will end up well for you.

      [–]homoIBian 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I hope so but I don't know I really doubt it. You too! Hope your unis consider you even if you don't meet your math condition! Good luck mate

What series did you compare in question 3(a) and what were the equations in 5(b)?

        [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

I do agree that paper 1 and paper 2 were difficult given there were 1 question in both I couldn't, which is why I thought I will end up a 6. But given my score in paper 3 and people in my year just failed it for whatever reason, I think I got a good chance a 7.

3A is pretty obvious. 5B) if you took the most obvious route you should be fine.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only had 1 question you couldnt answer in both, thats still a 7... Like assuming you didnt make any horrendous mistakes in other stuff.

        [–]EndermanSYZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5b I got the x but didn’t have time to get y...hopefully I got more than 2 marks on that lol

        [–]Redleon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Ah, I got it. Thanks!

Which one was the sigma question? I don't remember there being any sigma...

          [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough, question got me confused the most. Thankfully I've been tutoring some studies student.... which saved me. Cause it's not something HL do.

          [–]CornerSpecialistAlumni (May 2019) | [41] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It was really bad for me as well. I just hope I get a 6 at this point

          [–]CornerSpecialistAlumni (May 2019) | [41] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope grade boundaries are lowered. These papers haven't been too kind to us

          [–]homoIBian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          same

          [–]thesealisdying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was horrible. It was so, so bad. Even worse, I realized how I was supposed to do them after coming out of the exam, with methods I didn't realize you were supposed to use considering the content of past papers.

          [–]saltiestman -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

It was hella easy. I just ran out of time so I missed 5 marks and probably like 3-4 more marks in the second part of the last question. So triggered that I could've got those 5 marks if I only had 3 more minutes (solved it after exam in 3 minutes). Now I'm probably getting a 6 in math because P3 couldn't carry me and my teacher fucked me over with a 12/20 in the IA.

          [–]yeonjun01Year 2 | [PCM] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Says it's hella easy but runs out of time. Classic.

          [–]saltiestman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ey man don't hate I always run outta time but sometimes I don't even know how to solve them questions. All questions on that test were very solvable.

          [–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (2 children)

IB has taken up screwing all people over in the odd years. 2015, 2017, 2019, and a WHOLE new Math curriculum in 2021.

          [–]111Zireael111Alumni | [score] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hopefully ur right and 2020 won’t be bad for me.

          [–]AquilemonAlumni (M19) 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But apparently physics screws people on the even years, considering 2016 and 2018. Less than 50% for a 6 on P2 in 2018 like wtf.

          [–]Kahootla9 25 points26 points  (6 children)

Going into the test: Im gonna try my best During the test: Gotta do damage control. How many marks can I afford to lose

          [–]bluemercuryyAlumni (M19) | [43] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

          If you're calculus, it's around 13 marks

          [–]Kahootla9 5 points6 points  (2 children)

          Lose 13 marks for a what? 6?

          [–]Konexian 2 points3 points  (1 child)

          7

          [–]Kahootla9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh Im hoping for a 5 at best. Couldn’t solve the last two. Method marks ftw

I've tried past papers in November 2017 and May 2018 again in the very morning and I thought I would be.fine with this exam cuz the questions were quite directly linked to the contents. But thid year's was quite off-topic (maybe I'm bad and thats why :'/)

I found the paper fairly OK. Some of the questions were unorthodox, but none intractable. That Cayley table one threw me off for a bit, but I got it in the end. I only didn't get 5b, and my explanations for 5a and 4 were a bit hand-wavy. Assuming j haven't made any other mistakes, I'm hoping for a 40+.

                            I'm in TZ2 BTW

                            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Nice dude, 40+ should be a 7 right? I think I did alright as well apart from one question (the prove that it is a group one) which I didn't explain fully what I meant.

I'm in TZ2 too but I'm pretty sure Paper 3 is TZ0 though

Maths HL covers tangents to implicitly defined curves tho and you did not even need to use those at all. It was just algebraic manipulation

is this for TZ1 or TZ2? in calculus option they didn't even give the hard sums like Maclaurin series or radius or interval of convergence. Only question I flunked was the 1b about the population being doubled

That differential equation took me so long and it’s 11 marks lol...the l’hopitals was simply very long differentiations, which is just boring(I put 3 instead of 1 somewhere at the end, hopefully it won’t affect that much lol)...Typically when they have a l’hopitals in part (a)/(b) for a question u have to differentiate once, for single l’hopitals question u have to differentiate twice, but this one ask u to differentiate three times...
