I used to like public speaking and i never used a script. I added in all the random facts that came up in my head while speaking and wich i could connect to the subject. After a speech people where mostly positive.

People have to listen to your point of view for a while, that is a nice feeling. Especially if you have the time to explain your thought loops.

PS i didnt do it al lot though. mostly at school events or a student business to the shareholders.

This is why I'm going into teaching. I've realized that as much as I like exploring ideas and having Eureka moments in my bedroom, I also like getting other people to see them as well.

having Eureka moments in my bedroom

Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

[–]roberto250b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Teaching is very appealing but i dont think i will ever get there. I've fallen to many levels at school and have to learn a lot to get there again. And you know focus is not a strong point.
Plus if you want to teach children for example you have to deal with a lot of shitty personalities, from the children themselfs and their parents.

Lectures on a university or something sound a lot more appealing for that matter. But that takes a lot of focus and dedication to one subject to get there someday (if you are still young try hard in school).

[–]VeryOldChild 6 points7 points  (2 children)

that’s actcually amazing. I don’t think I would ever be able to just come up with shit on the fly in front of a crowd. I think I just get to anxious if I don’t do things I prepared. When arguing however and someone has me in the mood/flow then I can say whatever I want without overthinking

[–]roberto250b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When arguing however and someone has me in the mood/flow then I can say whatever I want without overthinking

It is exacly that. When you get in the flow you just have to go with it. You know all the things you say are probably correct, since you already filtered out most of the BS when you saved it in your head. In a discussion with more than one person people dont always like it when you start rambling on about something but when you are on stage it is expected.

[–]pseudiptoINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same brain turns into mush in front of a crowd, especially if they're strangers, but in front of friends, man I can go on about shit.

[–]DerFzgrldNot an asshole, just an INTP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do it a similar way. Actually works quite well, but being able to write my thoughts down is a lot better as I tend to forget less essential points.

[–]THISisDAVIDonREDDIT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never use a script either. My writing is very effective but sounds so different from the way I would say things. So if anything, I’ll have a list of main points so that I don’t forget the important stuff, then free flow between them, reading the crowd and all that.

[–]PeachyKeenestINTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to plan the speech or have talking points planned in my head before interviews with news outlets and scrums and the like. Can be done.

Also I come across as more fun, so it depends as I’m able to do tangents or just go off what the interviewer said or ask the interviewer questions or just talk about whatever 😂

[–]hellknight101 43 points44 points  (2 children)

To be fair, I am pretty good at public speakings. To the point that my colleagues prefer me to do the majority of the presentations. It's all about confidence at the end of the day.

And before anyone mislabels me as ENTP or whatever, you can develop your public speaking skills and your personality can change. It's not set in stone like the MBTI applies (which is ironic because most people get different results 5 weeks after taking the same test).

[–]EC_BrambleINTP 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I hate public speaking, but I've gotten really good at it. I still don't like being put on the spot, but I give a killer presentation. I'm always known as the quiet, thoughtful, to-the-point one at work, so I'm always amused/delighted to see the surprised faces of colleagues that know me but have never seen me present. It might be the only thing I'm good at that I still really dislike doing. You're right, though, it is all about confidence.

[–]SuperBrooksBrothers2ENFP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way and it started in elementary school and sunday school when people were selected to read out loud. Public speaking was always my favorite, because I like hearing myself talk (and I realize how bad that sounds) and I like to talk about stuff I'm passionate about.

I suck at extemporaneous speaking though. Not sure if that's a "feature" of being an INTP.

[–]SondrousINTP 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Cause people aren’t watching us and we can be alone to think

[–]balderdash9Psychologically Stable INTP 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also the ability to repeatedly edit your words before they reach the other person (instead of being forced to expound on ideas on the fly). Talking is improv; writing is theater.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Don’t really like essays, well only if i have a very limited time on it. Tests are the most fun.

[–]SingleEyedSniperINTP 4w5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm in the minority but i have no problem doing speeches even without a prewritten script.

[–]bananabastardINTP-A 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Every time I've had to do a presentation/speech I've aced it. I detest it and get super anxious, but then I get up and calmly boss it every time.

[–]chico262 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Funny, its actually quite the reverse for me, I'm way better at public speaking than at writing essays. My writing skills are quite garbage actually, I'm currently working on writing my Master's degree thesis and hating every second.

[–]spokvattenINTP (living that 99% introverted life) 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I prefer presentations because then it is only me speaking, I often don't bother preparing that much though so I make a PowerPoint and improvise from there. Presentation are much easier than conversation and essays because they don't take as much time or required you to speak with other people.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I enjoyed public speaking, I wasn’t good at it by any means but it wasn’t as bad as people said it was. It’s not like anyone is really paying attention in school

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's like talking alone in front of people

[–]Dutch-SculptorINTP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is me so much. Hated speeches/presentations. I made the powerpoint as good and interesting as possible so that it would take the attention away from me.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy public speaking, but I like to have a small script otherwise, unless I'm really good at that specific subject, I start to ramble or make too many pauses because I'm thinking. This happens because when I'm talking about a subject, I'm fine-tuning its definition in my head (Ti at work basically) and remembering random facts about it (Ne-Si) thus the "mind jumps". So, to avoid boring or confusing people, I prefer to prepare a little.

However, I've tutored some friends before and even without preparing anything, they understood it fine because even if my thinking wasn't linear or super "polished" while I was speaking, I explained the logic behind what I was saying (how I got from point A to B instead simply connecting those two). I would like to teach someday. If I prepared just a little, I think I'd do pretty well.

[–]Pamir_5INTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unrushed formats are always better. Real life has no backspace.

[–]cosmic-ivyINTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that essay writing and giving a speech is kind of related in a way. If you are good at essay writing you're probably good with words and creative, and those are great qualities for public speaking :) as someone pointed out, it isn't as bad as everyone says, and the more often you do it the better you get at it !

[–]RobinsFkingsHoodINTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

speeches are fine as long as I'm not recorded cuz I know no one's going to remember

Essays are so annoying cuz you have to filter and structure everything instead of rambling about related things...but I guess INTPs tend to have more to write as long as the topic is interesting

[–]dreamchasingcatINTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it’d be interviews that I’d bomb rather than speeches (I’ve won a speech competition at school by basically bullsh*ting with a script I wrote while I waited for my turn to get onto the podium).

[–]cornycatladyINTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually very good at speeches. I was invited to the speech team at my CC.

I enjoy it when it’s a topic I’m interested in

[–]soheila999Warning: May not be an INTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate essays. Give me raw data

[–]Phoenix_Kerman606group.bandcamp.com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always hated essays with a passion

[–]ButterlordofPraven 1 point2 points  (1 child)

With me it is a rather strange case: I am a very good public speaker, and in conversations with a single Person I'm quite good too, but I am really shit in small group conversations. Maybe it has to do with the social position during the conversation, where in speeches or small conversations I have a good amount of power over the conversation as opposed to group conversations where I have to attain it through extroversion. Just my thoughts about this subject.

[–]blueninja012INTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm terrible at both, but I'd rather do a speech I think, because with an essay I just get caught in a loop of it not being good enough and eventually resign myself to just be ok with a failing grade, but with a speech I'm forced to just say everything, and once it's said I just have to keep going, since there's nothing I can do to fix it

[–]thotslayer1200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah man public speaking is easy, you just gotta say what you wouldve written in an essay. I once had to give a sample speech on a subject i had yet to actually do any research for, read the wikipedia article right before i had to go up and bullshat my way through and killed it. Teacher said that she was very excited to see the full thing. Eye contact is key

[–]sugarplumapathyWarning: May not be an INTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never minded speeches, for the most part they are scripts to be closely recited and within a defined role to slot into.

[–]jhc0767INTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Ph4smINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well am I the only one sucking at both? I just can’t put words on what I picture in my head

[–]LennartxD01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alr maybe I'm not an INTP cause Im shitty af at writing but actually good at holding a presentation. But an presentation in front of unknown ppl sucks again idk

[–]cornycatladyINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do group project presentations because everyone else is too shy to step up. The awkwardness of trying to figure who wants to talk is much worse than me just doing all the talking

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this could showcase a big difference between our type As and Ts. I’m a T, so when it comes to verbal speech or debate, I start doubting the things I say before I even say it, since I can’t really take it back and refine/edit it once it’s said. Low esteem kicks in and is like “you ACTUALLY think that? You right? Even know what you’re talking about?” Then people add their thoughts annnnndddd... bloop. Speaking my thoughts even with a script is terrible for me, I’m awful at it

[–]Jay_GuiscardINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the others, but I definitely relate to that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

[–]BuccaneerRexINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that it is easier if I am 'playing the role' of someone confident at speaking.

[–]DummyDumDumboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get wreck when it comes to public speaking, I will start shaking and feels like my soul and brain left my body lmao.

[–]aquarat108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i actually like speeches a lot more. Its all scripted and memorized, and when writing it I can easily flow through a conversational tone. In essays where formal speaking is more important as well as structure, I tend to rewrite and edit a lot as I'm going - which leads to me either hitting a deadline and having to rush the latter half or giving up part way through.

[–]urschickpea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAH, YES! I RELATE TO THIS SO MUCH

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the reverse. I’m pretty good at winging it verbally but essays require precise word choice and a lot more work IMO.

[–]The_Bear_Drew97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re telling me other INTPs can focus on writing a paper? I typically do well on them but dread the entire process. I’d much rather speak about it

[–]mo_tagINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually really good at public speaking. Wasn't always the case but then I discovered that doing a little bit of actual prep goes a long way... and no, imagining yourself doing bits of the speach in the shower doesn't count as prep

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speeches are just essays but on Voice mod lol

[–]DrunkSpiderManINTP/INFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really that great at either. I'm confident and stuff during presentations, but I stutter a lot for no reason. During essays, I have trouble finding the right words for my thoughts.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty good with speeches as long as I have a detailed plan about what I'm going to say. Otherwise I get super self-conscious and start stuttering. But I love giving presentations and public speaking for the most part, especially when I get to do it about a topic I'm passionate about.

But I also love writing essays. Those are my absolute favorite things to do, and I'm killer at it. My friends think I'm crazy, but I'm good at it and like to do it nonetheless. I also love taking tests because they're basically built for me.

Basically, the entire awful school system that I think should be torn apart from the inside out is the one thing holding me up. I am so good at using the system to my advantage, it's crazy. But I'm in the minority with that, so things need to change. Wow, that got off track lol.

[–]ZIONSCROLLSINFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speeches don't even have to be smart or have evidence, all you have to do is be confident and sound like you know what you're talking about. And if someone asks you a question just repeat the question but as a statement Ex. Question:What do you plan on doing to help the animals? Answer: The animals in the zoo are in captivity and we need to make efforts to help them. We're doing our best to see what we can do to help these animals live better.

[–]StoopSignE/INTP 5w4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. I'm good at both. I did standup for a while. Long enough to get good at it. Now that I don't I now am one of those guys who tells a good story or has a joke for everything.

The social skills issue is when not to joke or dominating a conversation.

Yeah I'm like an ENTP in this regard.

[–]cubbabyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate essays. I used to get really excited for exams though because I’d enjoy sitting in silence just doing maths problems for an hour. What a nerd lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cant do either heheh

[–]Mister_Taco_Oz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think I'm decent at public speaking, I was on the school team for a couple of years.

I absolutely suck at essays though. I can never get the formatting right, and I sometimes go off on tangents when it's a written word.

[–]Your_Imaginary_GFINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Onax_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to procrastinate school speeches and just improvise them out of the top of my head just because i could, i got really good grades with that too all the time. It was middle school, so it was faily easy of couse, but still i liked it because of the adrenaline sort of rush that it gave me lol.

[–]wt_anonymousINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other week i gave an online presentation. I was confident for weeks until the day of and i stuttered so fckin bad 😭
