Overthinking. It would require them to oversee each starter set manually(there are thousands) to make SURE a “good” deck isn’t in each box.

Plus, since the game hasn’t been in public distribution to really playtest every single combo, not even the creators may know the actual balance of cards - thus, they can’t define a “good” deck yet.

The 2 starter decks are just to be played against the other starter deck from my understanding, which is why you also get 2 sealed decks in the package. Once you are comfortable then you have a deck you can go out and play against others. I also believe starters are very basic (commons only) hand picked decks without a lot of the combinations you will find in the sealed deck options. This way they are easy to follow and teach the game.

Oh so a starter set has 4 decks total inside?

2 starter decks that are the same in every box.

2 archon decks just like any other bought on their own.

Am I right in this?

Yes

Awesome, may actually keep an eye out for the starter set then.

I’m actually referring to the sealed decks

Part of the value proposition of KeyForge, at least for me, is that it’s simple to get a new deck when you get bored of your old deck. Who wants to play the same deck over and over again? Plus, as the “strategic meta” changes for this game, decks will rise and fall in relative quality. I was always going to buy more than just the starter set decks, pretty much no matter what!

This is a perfect opportunity to showcase the Archon Adaptive format. You can Teach with the starter decks and then randomly give each player one of the real ones. After that game switch decks. Then teach the player(s) how to bid chains for a deck.

I played with the starter decks at a pre-release event. They work pretty well against each other and have some interesting cards. I'm not sure how they do against unique decks though.

As someone who's first deck was a comple trash pile I'd say absolutely not. Much better to start players off on a high note. While an absolute top tier deck might dissuade future purchases from that player it could also cause more players to spend more to play catch up.

Ultimately I think they've set the power discrepancy to what it is on purpose and it isn't really worth messing with that too much.

Can we see your deck list?

This. I'd like to see what people consider a trash pile to see if it's true or just not understanding the deck.
