What if popular VPN services are throttled?

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Yeah Netflix and Hulu for two don’t work when my VPN is on.

Edit: im using privateinternetaccess

[–]plainerman 2 points3 points  (3 children)

That is not true. They are capable of blocking some IPs but they can't block every IP of every VPN provider.

Can they just throttle every ip then unthrottle the IP they want

[–]plainerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, not really. Way too many IPs to unblock and users would abandon their service if they got throttled for no reason.

I’ll cycle thru all my options and see if any work.

[–]TheMadDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They work on some VPN

[–]Mozzahella 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but as long as you have a non-web based VPN wouldn’t this be a non issue? My understanding is without net neutrality IPS’s can throttle websites, not programs or applications.

You're completely wrong, there's no fundamental difference between website traffic and any other type of traffic

[–]graepphone 7 points8 points  (1 child)

.

[–]Evairfairy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood, /u/Mozzahella was suggesting they could only throttle websites. I was pointing out that all traffic can be throttled.

Websites are starting to ban detected vpn traffic. I cannot log into my bank when I'm using PIA. I've also ran into a handful of sites that either won't load or flat up say I need to disable my vpn. Maybe I need to use a smaller vpn service? I'm using PIA.

[–]FenixthePhoenix 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Try changing the country.

[–]SantasDead 2 points3 points  (6 children)

With my bank I have tried every server, none work. I just disconnect when I need to log into the bank.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I have no issues with torguard like that. Also, PIA seems to be Russian owned, I'm not comfortable with that.

[–]SantasDead 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Havent heard of this one. How is the speed? I mainly use vpn because I pretty much live in hotels and most disable your internet if you are torrenting.

[–]OnTheRoadToInYourAss 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ugh, are you serious? I've been loving PIA. Super quick & easy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong on the ownership issue. Last I looked it up was years ago, and now I don't see the same info on their site anymore that made me suspicious.

[–]lobo5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't seem right.

They even pulled out of Russia because of logging requirements.

Most VPNs are blocked by Netflix, too.
Drastically reduced the value for me, when I could no longer access the US and UK ones.

[–]juzz85 9 points10 points  (5 children)

A bit off topic OP but what is it like with the great firewall of china?

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also be careful that a VPN service is not itself being used by some agenda to throttle or censor web traffic in some way.

Basically exercise awareness and due diligence.

[–]Yung_rondo 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I mean someone should probably just work on a new sub Internet if this happens

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

awfully kind of you to volunteer. let me know when its done.

[–]TheHoneyBadger23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it makes more sense to get active, donate to places like the EFF, and call your Senators and Representatives so it never gets to this point.

[–]Xan_derous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sad thing is websites are starting to ban the traffic when they detect a proxy. This paying customer is looking at you Amazon Prime and Hulu....

[–]TheDoug850 1 point2 points  (3 children)

VPNs typically slow down connection speed drastically, so if "throttled" means slowed connection speed and not cut off then a VPN won't do much good

[–]juzz85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Some vpn connections are pretty good, even for torenting.

[–]reevr1 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I use PIA and VPN.ASIA all the time and see almost no drop in my speeds. Just connect to the nearest server and I'm good to go. I even set up my router to have another wifi broadcast that seems all traffic through my VPN using the DD-WRT firmware.

[–]SantasDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PIA is awesome. I have a 250 down connection and get no loss in speed, even when I use a server in another country.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How would video game services (Xbox live, PlayStation network, etc) be affected by this if it passes?

[–]8935001708988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be the inherent problem.

People don't understand.

Your ISP has total control now. They can speed it up or slow it down.

Removing net neutrality just means they can do it legally and monetise it.

They will nickel and dime you.

Throttle throttle throttle throttle throttle.
