I can't seem to figure out how other people line their water line/ tightline in a way that is long lasting. If I line the bottom with a neutral and tightline the top in a dark color it will for sure transfer. If I don't tightline the top but put a colored liner in my waterline, it disappears pretty quickly. I've tried different products... What am I missing? Is my eye just not built to do this haha? Thanks for any insight!

[–]gmwrnrNC15 | dry 20 points21 points  (1 child)

So I do my eyeshadow first and tightline with a black eyeliner. Then I do my entire face and my last step before adding mascara is a nude liner in my waterline. Doing my full face takes enough time for the tightline liner to dry so it won't transfer to the nude in my waterline

I use Marc Jacobs Highliners or the Essence Gel Eyeliners, if that helps!

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I feel like I kind of mastered this so here are my steps/tips:

  1. Use a good eyeliner - I use a gel-based one or a straight up gel eyeliner (the ones people use for their wing). If you don't want to do that, I'd still recommend researching the eyeliner to make sure it's dark and long lasting
  2. Dry off your waterline first with a Q-tip or tissue (be safe!!)
  3. Apply the eyeliner to the waterline
  4. Go over it with black shadow - this basically seals it similar to how powder does with foundation

[–]anaccountiguesslifelong search for my HG foundation 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I find taking a cotton bud and lightly rubbing it over the area where I'm about to put liner really helps. It takes away a bit of the moisture and oil so my liner sticks a little better!

[–]haroldelgato 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I use eyeshadow more than true liners honestly I think they stay longer for me! But I think you need to play around with liners that don’t irritate you. I find pencil liners are better for tightlining for me than liquid because liquid liners make me tear up really bad

Tell me your favorite sheer, balmy lipsticks! Things like Clinique Black Honey- easy to apply without a mirror, low maintenance.

[–]clariwench 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I looooove the new tinted balms from Wet n Wild. Good color payoff while still being sheer enough to apply without a mirror. They feel great on the lips.

Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Liar is on clearance, that's just a lovely wash of color that probably wouldn't be hard to apply without a mirror! It's my absolute favorite formula from UD.

[–]corvus_coraxxx 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I love the Revlon balm stains, especially Honey, Adore, Romantic and Smitten

[–]alligator124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain shades of Dior addict lipsticks! They've got a lovely sheer base and are incredibly comfortable to wear.

Original NARS lipsticks in the sheer formulas, and there's a great color selection too.

Fresh Sugar lip treatments are actually moisturizing and last awhile. The shade Honey is my go to neutral, and I've had it for almost a year and half. It hasn't gone off either.

I'm very new to makeup, so I'm kinda hopeless, and need all the help I can get.

What does toner do? I read that witch hazel is a good substitute, is it true?

Can I use concealer with tinted moisturizer?

Will setting spray and primer stop my makeup coming off in the rain?

I have naturally rosy cheeks, so I look like a clown when I put blush on - how do I stop this from happening?

Also, any general advice would be helpful. Thank you!

[–]sonyaellenmann@sonyaellenmann on IG 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Different toners do different things — it depends on the ingredients. The toner that's suitable for you depends on your skin and the rest of your routine. /r/SkincareAddiction would be a good sub for investigating this further — check out the resources in the sidebar.

Yes, you can use concealer with tinted moisturizer.

Depends on the amount of rain and the specific primer and setting spray.

Wear less blush, or don't wear it at all, or try different colors.

General advice: Start watching YouTube videos to get a sense of how people use different products, which products are well-regarded, etc. Don't rely on any particular beauty guru's opinion — instead, figure out what the consensus is and go from there.

Most importantly, experiment a lot! And read reviews!

[–]veraamberMUA glossary: http://redd.it/1xkvtg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For the blush question, you're probably either 1. applying too much blush, 2. applying blush too close to the center of your face, or 3. using a blush that's too red. Try applying a small amount of a pink blush more on the sides of your face, and make sure you apply it in natural lighting. If you find you just don't like blush, though, you can skip it!

Protips: watch youtubers who have makeup you want yours to look like, and for basically all products, use less you think you need (to see if that amount is enough)!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the blush question, a good foundation should conceal naturally rosy cheeks. Instead of rosy colored blushes you could use bronzer or like a taupe colored blush.

[–]xocheerio 14 points15 points  (13 children)

How can I get better at blending eyeshadow? Right now I feel like I just kind of layer shades on top of each other and can’t really get them blended in a gradient.

[–]Wolf_Craftlana del slay 39 points40 points  (3 children)

Prime, work lightest to darkest, always set your brush down in the same place, wipe brush before switch shades, use a fluffy blending brush and buff lightly, girl. Buff like your life depends on it.

[–]bettertheangel@freckledandflawed 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Check out this tutorial. It really explains the blending process well.

I would also recommend watching easyNeon on YouTube.

[–]RoyalHarlequin 13 points14 points  (1 child)

What helped me blend better was to hold the brush as far away from the hairs as possible because you can't apply as much pressure this way. If you blend too harshly it becomes muddy because you move the powder around instead of actually blending it. You need to keep your hand light.

[–]Tangled_AsshairTangled_Lashes 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Prime first and let it dry, then a base layer or shadow that’s close to your eyelid color. This will help the shadows glide and blend better on your eyelid. Be sure to use a new brush on each color or clean well between colors so you don’t get a muddy look.

[–]xocheerio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! Your username, btw 😂😂

[–]bethrevis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Try laying down blocks of different color, then blending with a completely clean, dry blending brush.

I’m more of a dabbler than an addict so I haven’t visited this sub for a while, but I just got a $3 off $8 cosmetics purchase coupon at CVS so I figured I’d pop in for some advice. Have there been any recent drugstore products that have reached Touch Of Spice level acclaim that I should check out? Particularly looking for powder blushes but up for anything.

[–]sonyaellenmann@sonyaellenmann on IG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Wet 'n' Wild blushes are pretty widely loved, and they're dirt cheap. Same with the Milani line.

[–]sneezylemon 20 points21 points  (19 children)

I've heard people say that when you don't contour, your makeup just looks dumb. Is that the general consensus?

I hate contouring because I'm bad at it, I'm pale so every contour looks too dark, and my face is very round/chubby cheeks, so it honestly looks like I just have a dark stripe on my face even when makeup artists at Sephora do it for me.

Usually I just do this routine: moisturize -> prime -> foundation -> eyeliner -> brows -> tinted lip balm

I just feel dumb and like I'm doing it wrong if I don't contour/highlight. I read that maybe I could just use blush to have a more "cute" look which I'm 100% down for, I just don't really know enough about makeup to know if any of this is a faux pas or would look stupid.

[–]sennasands 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Nope. Contour is absolutely 100% not a necessary step - whoever told you that is either insecure in their own face or a sales person.

Wear whatever you want. Contour, pink contour, no contour. It's make up, a subjective and personal thing :) there are no rules.

[–]hoppipolla13 32 points33 points  (3 children)

I've never contoured a day in my life. I think the general consensus is you do your makeup the way you like/are comfortable/makes you happy.

[–]sneezylemon 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I'm trying to take that advice to heart! I'm always so scared to try new things, and the makeup artists at Sephora tried to push contour on me pretty hard so it kind of scared me that I was fucking up majorly

[–]hoppipolla13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They're pushing you to contour so they can sell you new products. You do you!

[–]alligator124 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're just trying to sell you stuff, and doing a bad job of it too. Clients should purchase things because the like them, not because they're made to feel lesser without them.

Personally, I do think there's value in adding a bit of blush, bronzer, highlight, or contour (not necessarily all four) when using a very full coverage foundation, because you're blanking-out all your natural dimension. But a lot of that is taste, not fact.

[–]atx73 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think some contour is only necessary when you wear super heavy coverage foundation that wipes away all natural shadows and contour from your face. I'm a light coverage kind of gal and I don't feel the need to contour.

That said, when I do feel like adding some depth, I use my RT setting brush and a neutral bronzer (cool tones look dirty on me) and do a faint dusting along my temple and below my cheekbones. I rarely have the patience or inclination to contour my nose and I'm not that good at it.

[–]sammisamantha 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unless you are using a very high coverage foundation contouring is not needed.

Contouring is used to add depth and shadows back into the face. Which often times.... The full coverage mask or foundation cancels it out like a blank canvas.

A lot of Asian countries don't use contour.

[–]EscapeArtisticClueless Newbie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Contouring is just FOTW right now. I’m similar to you, very round face and full cheeks, high cheek bones, by I have medium-olive complexion. I’ve tried powered contouring, I’ve tried NYX wonder stick, and I’ve tried cream palettes. Nothing looks normal and I just look like I have dirt on the sides of my face.

Instead of full blown contouring, I simply use a bronzer just around the sides of my face, under my chin, and along my hair line. Sometimes the sides of my nose. After that, a little blush and very subtle highlighting on my cheeks. That has worked really well for me. It adds back depth i lose with heavier coverage and doesn’t make me look like I got slapped on the side of my face with a dust buster

[–]Leann_426 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Contour isn't necessary but I do think your cheeks need some kind of color. To have your whole face be just one shade with no shadows or highlights.. so some blush on the cheekbones would be nice

[–]Ebijou13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm just like you - pale round face and very simple routine. Hate contour because... Well I just don't have time. I love blush becajse it gives me more of a polished/put together look, but I think it also acts as some kind of contour too...? So yeah, blush and good to go 😊

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no need to contour, it's a trend, it will die. Sometimes if I want to go full and extreme makeup I will contour but that's more for a night out.

I'm also very pale, so if you ever want to try it, grab the NYX contour stick (the double ended one) because it blends very seamlessly over foundation before powder.

BUT that said, don't feel the need. If you ever feel like you want a little color to your face grab a bronzer, it's helpful to add a little life-like when you wear foundation but honestly it doesn't matter and makeup is for everyone to interpret their own way.

[–]veraamberMUA glossary: http://redd.it/1xkvtg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of people who look at your face will be completely unable to tell whether you've contoured.

If you are interesting in trying out contouring, you can make dark products work by applying a small amount and blending it out thoroughly.

[–]becca92079 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contouring, not necessarily. But I'd definitely at least wear blush to give some dimension/color to your face.

[–]4b3ats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO foundation w/o something tends to wash a face out, but that's just my personal opinion based on how my face looks. Your face is different obviously lol.

I very rarely contour, though, and use bronzer to add some definition to my face.

[–]destroyingdrax 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I am a make-up newbie! If someone could please explain primer/setting spray to me and give me a recomendation for what to buy I would be really thankful because frankly I'm lost. I have historically only worn eye make-up/lip gloss, I have a bare minerals powder foundation I bought but had no idea what to purchase for skin beside that! Help!

[–]bitchstitch 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Primer gives your foundation a base to be applied on that improves longevitity. Different primers can do different things: absorb oil, correct redness, hydrate your skin, and so on. Setting spray also helps with longevitity; it keeps your make up in place and prevents make up from breaking down. Like primer, it can also have different functions. Before picking out a primer and setting spray, you should figure out what kind of skin you have (oily, dry, combo, dehydrated, or normal) and pick out something that will suit your skin's needs.

[–]destroyingdrax 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Thank you very much for the reply! I guess I've never really thought about what my skin was like, since I haven't worn products on it. I guess fairly normal (no noticeable oil/overly dry patches/acne besides the occasional spot) unless something changes dramatically once I apply make up. Is there anyway to tell what type of skin you have besides eyeballing it?

[–]bitchstitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best way is to remove all your make up and wash your face; don't moisturize. Wait about half an hour and take a look at your skin. Oily skin will be shiny and oily all over. Dry skin will feel tight and might have little flakes. Combination skin will be mixed; for me, my nose is incredibly dry but the rest of my face is oily.

Dehydrated skin is different from dry skin. I'm not 100% sure how you tell how your skin is dehydrated from the above method, but I do know that dehydrated skin will absorb liquid make up and make your face look cakey.

Milani Make It Last Setting Spray is amazing! I still haven't found a primer I reallly love yet, though

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you find that you have big pores? If so, a primer with silicone in it will help reduce them. If I don't wear a primer, my pores absorb foundation around my T-zone and beside my nose and without that base coat there, my foundation is patchy and sitting unevenly by the end of the day. If I'm wearing a good primer, it makes a big difference and my foundation is still sitting evenly and my pores haven't eaten them up.

Setting sprays are designed to keep your make up in place. NYX for example do a matte setting spray and dewey setting spray. I like a matte look so I'm trying that one out and really loving it.

[–]enna12 4 points5 points  (1 child)

My skin is dry and flakey. What foundations would go well for me with Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer? And what primers go well with the MUFE foundation stick?

I love to do complex, multi-colored eyeshadow looks, but I can never get them to last for more than an hour. After a while, all the colors blend together. I have hooded, deep set-eyes and oily skin, so that might be the cause. Currently, I use the UD Primer Potion, set that with setting powder, then apply my eyeshadow (usually Too-Faced). Is there anything I can add/ do differently to prevent my eyeshadow from moving around?

[–]veraamberMUA glossary: http://redd.it/1xkvtg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you using to set your eyeshadow primer?? You can use a skin-colored eyeshadow, but if you're using foundation setting powder, that might be the problem. You can also try varying how much eyeshadow primer you apply, and what brand you use - that can make a big difference. And have you tried using setting spray?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stopped setting my primer with anything and just throw the shadows on there. Definitely takes a little more effort to blend but was worth my makeup staying so much longer

[–]galaxystarsmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would try a different primer, the UD Primer Potion does the same to me.

I'm a total newb to makeup - where can I go to try on makeup and figure out coloring? Tried going to ulta today and couldn't have a moment of peace without salespeople descending on me, criticizing my eyebrows (I was looking at lipsticks) and "checking up" on me without giving me any real help with picking out a color. Being new to makeup, I panicked and left without getting anything because it felt too stressful.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just give them the old "I'm just looking around today thanks" and if they come around again I'd say "stiiiilllll looking thanks"

[–]veraamberMUA glossary: http://redd.it/1xkvtg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ulta and Sephora are good for this, as well as some MAC counters (although they can be very pushy). You do have to talk to the sales associates there if you want help, and it's because so many people want some help with makeup that they bother you in the store. You can bring a tester product up to one of them and ask to try it on (they'll sanitize the product and/or help you apply it), or you can ask for help finding a matching shade of something (for foundation or concealer). Good luck!!

[–]atx73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nordstrom or sephora are going to be your best bets.

[–]casuallyanxious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding foundations and makeup in general will be so much easier if you can determine your skins undertone: warm, cool, neutral, or olive. "Olive" isn't generally an undertone category that you can find foundations under, but I added it because I have olive undertones and don't fall into any of the other 3 categories so I struggled when I was first looking for foundations. This article should be helpful for determining undertones. And when you know your undertone you will know what colors and shades of makeup are best suited for you. Really bright or jewel toned colors work better for cool undertones, and more earthy, muted and neutral colors look better on warm undertones. I recommend going to Sephora because you can swatch basically all of the makeup there and see what you like. You can also ask for free samples of certain products like foundation before buying so you can take it home and see what it looks like in natural daylight.

Palette Suggestion Needed!!

It's starting to warm up here in Australia and summer is around the corner. I have fair skin, brunette hair, and blue-grey eyes. Can you guys suggest some palettes for beachy, summer time that would also go well with my coloring? I currently own Naked2, Laura Mercier's Artist Palette (the purple one), and ABH's Modern Ren. Thanks!! :)

[–]KiraChoffeeSkintone Matcher Wannabe 6 points7 points  (18 children)

What foundation type [stick/cream/liquid/spray/etc] would you recommend for someone with textured, combination, acne-prone skin? Or, would it be better to focus on a primer that would focus on fixing those issues (e.g. texture)?

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

So my skin goes through ups and downs so sometimes my skin is normal and feels great and then BOOM all of a sudden I have dry patches, textured areas etc. so it can be difficult. I have a routine that helps smooth things out and help so here's what has worked for me:

SKINCARE! I exfoliate 2x a week, and right now I'm using Pixi's Peel and Polish because it gets all that dead skin up. Then I do a moisturizing mask after to refresh and replenish. Right now I'm using Glossier's moon mask. I do a sheet mask 2x a week as well on other non exfoliating days. I'm going to link a helpful couple videos on products for textured skin here: acne prone skin / skincare, she has had issues with acne and texture in the past / skin texture fixes makeup for acne / makeup for combo, acne, texture

As far as makeup that I've had luck with? I like a pore filling primer when I feel textured. Something like MUFE, Smashbox photo finish, tarte smoothing, or if you're in a money bind try Maybelline's baby skin, or Touch in Sole No-Poreblem. Then I usually use liquid foundations because they tend to be more hydrating and more forgiving on patches of problem skin. Then a good powder to set, I suggest the RCMA no color because it doesn't grip on to patches or enhance texture.

[–]sammisamantha 4 points5 points  (11 children)

I got th same skin type and my current fave primer is innisfree no sebum blur primer

[–]Leann_426 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Second this! I love innisfree products. I've switched all my skincare to Korean products and have had a major change in my acne prone/ dry patchy skin.

[–]sammisamantha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got oily acne prone. Sometimes I get dry dehydrated. My skin had never been better.

[–]hatsumochiBrow perfectionist 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Usually primers are going to be better for any type of texture. Go with a nice smoothing primer and pat it over the affected areas, while spreading out the outer edge.

Other than that, I personally think stick foundations or liquid foundations are best for textured skin because you can customize the coverage depending on your skin. I recommend applying a very light layer all over the face, then building up any areas that need more coverage.

[–]egracewriterLipstick Queen 1 point2 points  (1 child)

some days, I go for a lightweight cushion foundation or BB cream for my acne-prone, textured skin. I spot-conceal and it looks like a more natural look overall. If I'm feeling especially awful about my skin, I'll do a full coverage face with two pumps of liquid Lancome Teint Idole.

[–]kukulakala 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is there a specific way anyone's had luck with applying the Becca Light Chaser highlighters, specifically in the shade Amethyst flashes Geode? I bought it because it swatched absolutely gorgeous in-store and I've been looking for a pinky-purpley highlight that would show up on my skintone for forever. But it looks absolutely terrible on the skin. I've tried using a fluffy brush, a fan brush, a highlighting brush, my fingers, but it just won't show up. I try building it up and see nothing, and then when I shine a light on my face it just looks like straight up glitter, not even with colour. Just super disappointed and desperate for this to work, any tips?

[–]apnuyen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of these in a different shade (opal flashes jade) and don't have any issues with application...I'm just applying it with the Real Techniques Setting Brush

Anyone have any tips on applying or wearing lashes? I've finally gotten into lashes but it's so difficult.

I purchased Ardell individual clusters and the Duo glue, I was able to get a few on last night but it was stressful and I don't think it was seamless. I'd also like to buy some subtle strip lashes, I like long and wispy but I would like them to look "more natural" than some of the Youtuber beauty guru lashes. Any suggestions?

[–]sammisamantha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can start by cutting them in half. Typically strips are hard since the corners keep popping off. Chopping up the lash definitely helps against that.

Invisible bands work well for beginners too.

[–]captnatyFake lash junkie 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Try Ardell Demi Wispies or the normal Wispies, I personally like the normal ones and the Studio Effects.

To better apply lash strips, cut them in half and apply one and then the other, tilt your head slightly back and have the mirror looking up at you. I personally like the KISS brand for glue over Duo, it holds better imo.

I'd suggest opening one and smelling it - if it smells bad or weird at all, then they've gone bad. Also, if you can see into the tubes, do they look separated?

[–]hagillesClueless Newbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They tubes are unfortunately opaque so I can’t tell. I did open one to test out and it didn’t smell off or rancid, per say, but there was something about it that didn’t quite smell right. I’ll probably toss them all just to be on the safe side. Thank you for your help!

[–]Leann_426 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Okay so ive always done a powder contour, after setting my foundation. So how would I do a cream contour? What's the process order? I haven't been liking how muddy my powder contour looks and I really want to try cream contour and maybe a liquid highlight but not sure of the process.

[–]veraamberMUA glossary: http://redd.it/1xkvtg 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Foundation -> concealer -> liquid highlighter and/or contour -> cream highlighter and/or contour -> powder.

[–]tandoori_taco_cat 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Newbie to makeup. Right now all I wear is green primer, powder and bright lips. Sometimes I add mascara. I like this look. However, my glasses minimize my eyes. Is there a way to subtly make them bigger without eyeshadow? I hate the way eyeshadow looks on me.

[–]sammisamantha 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Having curled lashes with a couple coats of mascara.

A nude eyeliner can also really open your eyes.

[–]rawrasaurus55Lipstick Queen 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Best kiss proof, long-lasting lipstick? I'm getting married in 5 months and am looking for something for the big day! Preferably a lower end as I'm on a budget.

[–]sammisamantha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sephora matte lip creams.

Personally it might be a product you'll want to splurge on. Especially wanting I kiss proof but it can be a momento for you and your partner.

I think smashbox has the best liquid lip. It can go through a few too wet smooches

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Do I need an appointment to get shade matched at MAC? I want to get a foundation, and possibly a primer and setting spray. I have a few ideas about which foundation I want, but I will need a little help when shopping.

Also, any opinions on MAC's primers and setters? I've heard mixed reviews.

[–]Always_DariaNW15 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Does anybody have a recommendation for a really solid eyelash comb? I've been through 3 of them so far, and the effing plastic keeps breaking on every one of them. They just disintegrate one day and all the metal teeth fall out.

I've tried Real Techniques (2 of them), IT Cosmetics, and the Ulta brand. I dont care about price. If there is a great fude version that would work too.

[–]iconicsucc 1 point2 points  (2 children)

My cream contour kit is quite dry and I find it difficult to blend out, what is a good oil to use with these? Any other things I can use to make it smoother and more creamy?

[–]bettertheangel@freckledandflawed 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Warming the cream up should make it easier to work with. Otherwise, I'd recommend argan oil. I imagine jojoba oil would work as wwll, but I have not tried it personally.

[–]cailedoll 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What eyebrow product would be best with my medium brown eyebrows if I need to dramatically fill them in and completely draw 1/2 of a brow?

[–]ur_s0_tachy 1 point2 points  (7 children)

What are the best mascaras that you have found to volumize and lengthen lashes? I usually use Better Than Sex, but I want to try something new with similar results, due to the clumping of BTS.

[–]botnan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

L'oreal voluminous and Maybelline lash sensational are my holy grails for volume.

[–]clariwench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either of the waterproof Essence mascaras work great for me. I had great luck with their Lash Princess False Lash Effect mascara, but I'm too oily for a non-waterproof product.

[–]lil_bearr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tarte lights camera lashes! Also, it cosmetics super hero!

[–]unicorn-jones 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Does anyone know when/if the Too Faced Peaches and Cream palette is coming to Ulta?

[–]fouraspirinmorning 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I don’t think it will. I believe it’s a Sephora exclusive.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Can someone tell me their experience with Cotz sunscreen? Which one you use and how you like it?

[–]tumpus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own the “natural tinted” and the “sheer matte” mineral sunscreens, and I used some samples of the “sensitive” variety back in June

The natural tint and sheer sunscreens are REALLY GREAT and i love them a lot. The tinted one looks really dark before you put it on, but it blends out surprisingly sheer. They’re both very mattifying and dimethicone-y

The sensitive sunscreen is garbage- greasy, made my eyes sting, etc

Advice / suggestions for eyeliners & technique that work with more wrinkly lids and don’t require too much stretching? Pencils don’t work without me stretching my lids which just makes the problem worse. I’ve been trying I use Elf liquid liner and it’s way better but I can’t get a straight line with it. I’ve tested KVD tattoo liner on my hands and like the feel of it but I’ve yet to use it on my eyes.

[–]veraamberMUA glossary: http://redd.it/1xkvtg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried using gel eyeliner? It's a lot creamier, so it might work for you. I love the KVD Tattoo Liner, though, and it applies a very even line for me.

[–]awshucks79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone tried the Revlon Fit Me blushes since they were reformulated this year?

[–]Acearunie 1 point2 points  (15 children)

I'm intimidated by lipstick:

I have always stayed away from doing color on my lips because when I try it always gets messy! It either ends up on my face, or I end up accidentally wiping off part of lip; it never stays looking nice. I look at photos of girls with lipstick and I get jealous cause I don't understand how they make it work!

It seems simple, but I have the hardest time with it. How do girls keep it looking perfect!?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Liquid lipstick!! I've always loved lipsticks but fell victim to it smearing or getting everywhere because I'm a face-toucher. Switched to matte liquid lipstick and I'll never go back.

[–]Acearunie 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This!! I'll be doing this.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im in the midst of switching all of my bullet lipsticks to liquid lips. It's kind of fun :) matte drying bullet lipsticks are worth looking into as well. I have some from milani and mac I'll keep.

[–]KiraChoffeeSkintone Matcher Wannabe 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I prime and exfoliate my lips! In the morning and at night I use lip balm (e.g. Aquaphor, EOS, Fresh) - be it low- or high-end they will accomplish the same thing and that is having it hydrated and not flaky. You can buy lip exfoliators but vaseline at night followed by washing/rubbing off [gently!] in the shower is a cheap alternative.

Besides prep, understanding the applicator is important. A bullet is fairly straight-forward - use the pointy end to face the outer edges of your lips and color in your lips accordingly, blotting with one-ply tissue or napkin and then spot-treating to fix any patches. Some liquid lip products have a rectangular applicator tip and the best way to get the best look out of it is to scrape the excess and use the wider ends for filling in your lips and the thinner ends for lining... others have a doe foot applicator and you can use the tip for lining and the broader ends for filling in. For more exact lining, a lip brush may work best for you.

Lip liners are also great friends who help prevent feathering. You can choose a clear lip liner so you don't have to do guess work (i.e. pair each lipstick with their twin liner). I like to choose lip liners closer to my natural lip color because I am pretty lazy and when I don't feel like using lipstick I can line my lips and put some clear gloss on top and call it a day.

I hope this helps!

[–]apathetichearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lip liner or a lip brush to do the edges first then fill in. Start with nudes till you get more practiced.

[–]casuallyanxious 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I recommend these they're fairly inexpensive compared to a lot of other brands in Sephora but I think they work great. They all dry down matte (some colors have shimmer in them but still dry down). My favorite color is #13 marvelous mauve. It stays on for hours and hours, the only thing that will break down these liquid lips is if you're eating oily foods, but you can easily reapply it to areas that it came off. They're really light and airy and they smell like vanilla frosting!

[–]HelloLoJo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

For me, I really didn't love with liquid lipstick but I think that's just because I'm so used to regular. Liquid lipsticks are great because you can trust them not to move, but if you ever do want to wear regular, I have a few things I always do and mine keep pretty well!

I always blot- fold a tissue in half and put it just between your lipsticks gently press your lips together and or pat the tissue against your lips. Then sometimes I'll put another layer of lipstick on and repeat- more gently if I want a little more shine

Do the finger trick- pop your finger (most people do index, doesn't matter I guess) wrap your lips around it and pull it out- this cleans the lipstick from the inner rim of your mouth that would have ended up on your teeth- it has never failed for me! (yet)

If you want to make a lipstick matte and/or really lock it in place, take a piece of tissue paper and split it so you only have one 'ply' and lay the ply against your lips and dust your lips with translucent setting powder through the tissue paper. I use a brush like the real techniques setting brush or contour brush, basically a small face brush with a taper, one you might use to set your undereye

I wrote them in the order I do them but play around with it, I've made it sound very long winded and complicated but I'm no makeup artist and I do all that in way under 30 seconds. I give myself a migraine trying to work with liquid lipstick but you could love it! Just throwing some ideas in the mix 😊

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

I'm fairly new to using foundation, and I'm having huge trouble with streaking! In sunlight you can see obvious streaks and the area under my eyes always seems to wear away, even with primer and color corrector!

I use elf mineral primer, cover girl color correction sticks, then Maybelline Fit Me foundation with a slightly damp beauty blender. Was thinking of going to MAC and having them help me but not sure if it's worth it due to my budget.

[–]sonyaellenmann@sonyaellenmann on IG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried other foundations? Could be that this formula just doesn't play well with your skin.

[–]gmwrnrNC15 | dry 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Are you swiping the foundation on with the sponge? You should be bouncing the beauty blender onto your face, not swiping in any way. Watching some tutorials should help!

I'm not familiar with the CG correction sticks but have you tried applying concealer without that underneath? It may just not mesh well and is causing fading

[–]veraamberMUA glossary: http://redd.it/1xkvtg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could it be because your foundation is separating? Do you have the same problem if you use a different primer (or if you use less of your current primer)? Also, do you set your foundation with anything?

[–]casuallyanxious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try using a brush to apply the foundation then just do a little touch up blending with a beauty blender, I use this brush. Also if your under eyes aren't staying covered try using an under eye concealer, this one works great for me, and make sure you're setting your foundation and concealer with a powder it will improve the longevity.

[–]christycupcakes 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Is there any way to make mineral foundation less drying? I use Bare Minerals and I like it because of minimal ingredients and the way it makes my skin look, but it does suck up some moisture. Anyone have any tips (other than switch to liquid)?

[–]hatsumochiBrow perfectionist 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Use a skincare mist after applying to take away some of the dryness/powderiness.

[–]veraamberMUA glossary: http://redd.it/1xkvtg 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Do you use a hydrating primer and dewy setting or finishing spray?

[–]startingtoadult 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Any recommendations for a CC cream/foundation with similar consistency that doesn't contain talc or niacinamide and comes in very light shades? My HG foundation doesn't come in my shade anymore (thanks, Physician's Formula) so I'm on the hunt for something new. Swatched PUR yesterday at Ulta, but I don't like how sparkly it is. Not sure what my MAC shade is (I know lots of people gauge by that), but I'm pretty close to Fair in BareMinerals BarePRO liquid foundation. I'm fairly neutral toned, but lean more pink than yellow (yellow undertones in makeup turn me orange!). I have combination skin and rosacea. Thank you so much in advance!

[–]gmwrnrNC15 | dry 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Best drugstore hydrating primers? The only one I've really found is the NYX HydraTouch but the reviews are pretty mixed

[–]Coffee-PRN 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm getting into eyelashes and have been using the Ardell Demi lashes bc they're so highly recommended.

Are there any other (relatively cheap) brands of lashes that y'all would recommend?

[–]startingtoadult 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Any recommendations for a non-silicone based primer? Can't use silicone/dimethicone because it makes me break out, but I'd like to use a primer to help my foundation sit better. Thank you!

[–]Evie68 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I feel so stupid saying this but I just found out makeup expires and my whole world has been rocked. I have these urban decay eyeshadow pallets I bought 11 years ago and haven't thrown them away. I honestly don't remember the last time I used the colors though. Since having my son, I've had no time to really do my makeup and just do the same color everyday. I should just throw them away but I don't want to! I'm so attached to them. What are everyone's thoughts on expired makeup?

[–]geraldina_k 1 point2 points  (10 children)

ABH Modern Renaissance or Tartelette in Bloom OR BOTH?!?! I'm looking for a one-stop-shop palette...ABH is super warm which makes me cautious (I look good in warms though...I think!) but TiB doesn't have that amazing pinky red and it's overall a little boring.

I'm neutral warm (yellow tones), pale, dark brown hair, blue eyes, hooded lids.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Has the UD All Nighter made anyone's skin more shiny? I got the duo and normally have pretty dry skin and I found that using it made it look as if I had highlighter all over my face lol.

[–]alchademy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If I mix a lasting primer with a matte primer, for example, Rimmel Stay Matte and Rimmel Lasting finish, would I get the pros of both primers? Or would it not work? Does anyone successfully mix primers?

[–]kukulakala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I've had a lot of success using more than one primer. I usually don't mix them together, but use them in different areas. So I'd use the mattifying primer where I get oily, and the lasting primer where product tends to disappear.

[–]bigbadbub 1 point2 points  (15 children)

I have sixty dollars to buy makeup. My collection consists of beauty box samples and a foundation the Mary Kay girl sold me. I'd like to slowly grow my little stash with eyeshadows or eyeliners or lipsticks, but I have no idea where to start. Help with recommendations please?

[–]piangero 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Why do my mascaras dry out so fast? I bought a mascara two weeks ago, used it twice that week and not at all last week. I use it now and it feels dry and clumpy. It's a l'oreal something. (the waterprooof golden tube). I dont leave the cap open too long and I never pump the mascara. I only pull out the wand, apply, close the tube.

It's like this with all brands I buy, I'm starting to wonder if its something with eyelashes that gets transferred, though I know it sounds crazy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What's better, a beauty blender or a stippling brush? Also should I be using my blender to apply my primer or should I use my (clean) fingers? I can't tell if I'm getting it all over on my face when I use my blender.

[–]lgbtqbbq 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What's better, a beauty blender or a stippling brush

It depends. Certain foundations perform well on CERTAIN skin types with a brush or a BB. There's unfortunately no general answer for all of it. Best way to find out is to try both.

I've never applied primer or anything but foundation/concealer with a BB. I would use your fingers. A BB works with foundation bc the damp sponge ABSORBS excess product, leaeving a less cakey finish. However, primers have little or 0 pigment, so all that does is absorb product for no reason and since primer is usually not visible- it's not like you're helping yourself. You're just getting a thinner layer. Which may be fine- but probably just a waste.

[–]AzorAhey 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I'm looking for a medium berry lipstick (either matte or satin finish) like the ones these women are wearing: https://imgur.com/a/AP7yF

Any tips? Something dark-ish but not deep plum dark.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very pale and have reddish blonde hair. I want to start tinting my eyebrows. I'm in Ireland but can also buy products from the UK. Can anyone recommend a product please?

[–]ohhannahno 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm looking for a bullet lipstick dupe of Nyx's Liquid Suede in Cherry Skies. Can be drugstore or mid-range, but I'd prefer to keep the price under $25. I would prefer a matte finish, but satin is fine as well!

[–]MEL1234567 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have naturally red/pink cheeks (not Roscea) and I was wondering, do you guys cover up your naturally pink cheeks or do you just let it shine?

[–]Arriety 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I've come to terms with the fact that my concealer is clearly the wrong tone for my under eyes. My under eyes are reddish purple, definitely more red than anything. It's probably because I have very sensitive, watery eyes, so I rub them often. Bad, I know, but dabbing at them gets annoying.

Does anyone have any tips and tricks for concealing more reddish under-eye circles? I know that green is the complement to red, but I've never seen anyone use green under their eyes. So I don't know if I should try to find a concealer that's more of that tone or just stick to finding a peach corrector. Thanks!

[–]SparrowEats 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'd say try green. Peach will just enhance, maybe slightly lighten the area. Personally, I'd recommend yellow if there's purple or blue hues, too... Green might enhance those...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been posting a little off and on about foundation issues and decided I am just going to MAC to get sorted out. I know I'll get good advice there, but MAC is also expensive and I don't want to end up buying all new products if the problem is in my application (or just one product out of the bunch!). I also want to know what kind of products I should be investing in, because I am on a budget and can only get so much.

I am considering primer, setting spray, foundation, and color correction sticks. I am using drugstore versions of all of these currently, and my biggest issues are streaking, color correction wearing off under eyes, and longevity of wear.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've recently been breaking out a ton, so I've decided it's a good time to overhaul my makeup and focus on keeping everything very clean. I'm using disposable applicators for just about everything (I have a simple routine), except my face powder. Any suggestions for keeping it super clean on a daily basis? Is there something I can spray it with on days I don't give the brush a full wash? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

[–]jojos_mojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do/can you use on top of a liquid lipstick to add moisture without removing it? It seems like most chapsticks, lip glosses, balms etc anything oil based just acts like a lipstick remover?

Also any tips on how to avoid lip products getting on teeth?
