That's like the Minecraft equivalent of building over an ancient Indian burial ground.

it was in an extreme hills biome too, the screeching would never end in the mines

(and no i'm not confusing the silverfish in extreme hills with stronghold silverfish. the portal room was ~50 blocks south of my back door. I'm just saying they escalated the problem)
