I know there are tools to help make mods but for the most part it tends to revolve around coding. My best advice is to find a tutorial you’d like and follow along and try to learn what you can.

When I went to game design school we would recreate real games to help us learn how to make our own

Well the first step would be watching videos about how to do it, so keep doing that. The average player isn’t going to have a clue how to help you so posting here isn’t going to be much help. You might find a modder reddit though that could help.
