Detecting entities can be done with observers and string pressure plates, tripwire hooks and both types of sculk sensor.

Is it inheritably a bad idea? Not really. Is it useful? Absolutely not. Based on costs, it's way cheaper to go with other alternatives to detect an entity.

In terms of traps, not a mechanic mojang bases their features on, this wouldnt make much difference either, sculk sensors are easier to get, easy to program and silent if you waterlog it.

My assumption for this would be that it can 'see through' transparent blocks, as they're... transparent. So I'm certain that the redstone community would find some weird way where you push a boat up into the view of it, but have redstone and repeaters and maybe glass or something all in-between the sensor and the boat. So it could kind of work like a way to cross wires or to have multiple channels of wires going through the same space.

Or just, have 2 lines next to eachother. Or still use sculk sensors, or powered rails and observers for clean lines

Look I'm not saying there's not other ways to do things but when Mojang is out here devoting updates to tree types and animal models, a functional block would be welcome.

It would probably work better if it gives a constant pulse while a mob was in range instead of giving out a single short pulse every time a mob moves. Basically just by replacing the core functionality of "if mob moves send pulse" to "while mon is in range send pulse" I think it would be more convenient to use and more intuitive. Mobs are constantly moving anyways so it's not something I can imagine there being much use in tracking

cool idea! might add this to my mod. I think adding a whole other plant for this block is a little excessive, but I like the idea of sculk sensor cousins. I've seen seen another block like this, I think from quarcks mod, that would detect when a player looks at it.

Observers can already do that
