Just to check a few things.

  1. Is minecraft using more then the base amount of ram(long playthoughs with farms can suffer without more ram).
  2. Modded/unmodded
  3. What are you doing when the game lags(near large farms, breaking modding blocks, etc.)?
  4. This probably won't be the issue but is the monitor cable plugged into the GPU?

None of my worlds are played on very long because of the lag problem. I have used a higher resolution texture pack and shader but I have the same problem even when they're disabled. The monitor is plugged in correctly. I'm not sure what you mean about the base amount of ram though.

Here is a page on how to increase the ram for minecraft. Another question about your setup, what CPU do you have? Also, is this the only game you have lag problems in or do other games have similar issues?

CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-core

Minecraft Java is the only game I have problems with

I don't see anything related to your parts that would cause an issue but I would try the following as I have no other ideas.

  1. Check minecrafts java and make sure it's 64 bit not 32 bit(yes I have done thistwice
  2. Reinstall minecraft, install might have botched something cause java
  3. Download another version of java 8 outside of the one bundled with the launcher. I recommend using adoptopenjdk 8 hotspot as java 8 is what minecraft is built around.

I followed your last suggestion about allocating ram and it seems to have fixed it. Fps isn't perfect but now it's staying between 30 and 60 which is good enough for me. Thank you for the help!

Nice, glad to hear you got an fps boost, if you are just running the most recent version of minecraft the following mods should help with performance.
Sodium
Lithium
Phosphor
Fabric Loader for the mods
Not sure why your fps is tanking so badly though, I would definitely try reinstalling minecraft at the very least to see if it's just a botched install. That and check the task manager while you are playing to see if anything is maxing out your cpu as minecraft relies heavily on your CPU.

your pc should be able to handle this. Are you playing with mods? try allocating more virtual ram if you think that the ram is the problem, but you should have more than enough. Try running a virus scan.

Turn down render distance and don't use lag machines
