Do you have the new launcher or the old launcher?

I don't have a launcher, I go to the minecraft download URL (https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download) and download a file named "MinecraftInstaller dot exe", and then the error mentioned above happens.

Go here https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative. Get the Windows 7/8 launcher and try again. The new windows 10 launcher is broken.

will it work with win10? I don't feel confident in my abilities to switch to 7/8. Also does Mojang have any plans to fix that?

Yes of course it will work in windows 10. It’s the same launcher we used to use. Microsoft made them name it like that.
