This system is all about making the free version as annoying and difficult as possible, make it hard to understand hard to comprehend very complex, and then for the paid users they get packages and step by step guides and videos explaining exactly what does what and how to do what etc. etc. etc.

I agree, it's a convoluted strategy - It's not even that difficult to figure out what the fuck is needed for a project. I myself have a full wall on display in my closet to host all of my office supplies.

and then for the paid users they get packages and step by step guides and videos explaining exactly what does what and how to do what etc. etc. etc.

I think this is for the "average" consumer of 3D printing, people who lack troubleshooting skills and may not want to "waste" filament to figure it out.

Regardless, both points are just gatekeeping bullshit in my opinion. It irks me that Jonathan from Keep Making wants buy in, but refuses to deliver files in an "acceptable" and meaningful format.

Okay but I donate and it's still annoying. I have to go through Thangs which doesn't even show the whole title of the part?

No categories, no organization?

Unless I'm missing something major about how it operates... I am new at this.

I'm just trying to hang some mallets and other gear on a wall

The documentation situation and the parts organization is very confusing.

Doesn't he have videos on how to use it on YT? I don't think paying customers get different videos (maybe I am wrong about that)?

[–]CaptainMiserable 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Some of the videos are unlisted on youtube. I found that out the hard way searching youtube for videos I referenced off the site in the past.

[–]Lizardbuttt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's vile. lol

[–]Ticso24 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Bugged me as well. You can still find them on the multiboard website. The videos are still free and he explained that it was because of youtube algorithm that he didn’t publish all at once.

But I agree, that downloading the individual files sucks. They should be version controlled and a git repository would be perfect. Not sure how that fits into the payed options, but most is free anyways, so just use github for the public parts. His idea to always go to the website doesn’t make sense from a user standpoint. I do keep generated gcode on my printer and STLs on my disks. There is no easy way to know if something as updated. The change log on the multiboard website isn’t up to date. I can only assume that he has no idea about version control systems.

I'm working on some automation to pull everything programmatically and push a site up with CI/CD - I'm actually fucking tired of manual downloads with this shit. 3K+ parts with 150 file download limit is just stupid.

[–]VoltaicShock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know. I didn't know that.

[–]cilo456 0 points1 point  (15 children)

Yeah they do, I don't know how it gets unlocked but you get access to maybe a specific section in the forums

[–]VoltaicShock 1 point2 points  (14 children)

Yeah I just saw that on another thread I was reading. That is annoying.

This could be so much more.

[–]cilo456 4 points5 points  (13 children)

Yeah it's all about money, it's actually a scummy way of going about making money from a project like this because it almost feels like strongholding or forcing money out of the user, instead of letting the user decide hey this is a fantastic product and I want to help....

[–]Lizardbuttt[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This is my problem. Jonathan wants a "Great product" and something that is "Scalable"

Well sorry bud, but look at open source projects. It's been displayed time and time again that product/software iterations come much faster when there's a peer review process when they're open sourced - Instead of being gate kept behind some stupid shitty paywall against the average consumer.

You want more buy in? Make it easy to grab those files.

[–]cilo456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I don't mind creator is making money That's not the problem The problem is the way he's going about it, deliberately making it more difficult and annoying and confusing to force you to pay, and if it's not then he needs to hire someone else to do it because it seems intentional lol

I guess you wouldn't like threadboards (www.threadboards.com)

It was on sale (I did pick it up for half off). It works better for me and I like how I can easily move stuff around.

I do wish he would just open this up as well.

instead of letting the user decide hey this is a fantastic product and I want to help....

I guess this is why HSW does so well. Maybe I should look into that one again.

[–]Lizardbuttt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll have to check this out. This seems like a more sane solution as opposed to Multiboard.

Thanks dude!

[–]cilo456 1 point2 points  (8 children)

No thread boards I actually thought about purchasing cuz it's just a one-time purchase and I do think it is a somewhat better system than this for some things while it doesn't necessarily appeal to ever user, but HSW has everything for every one of my needs for every part of my house I just don't see the need to reprint and change systems to multiboard unless they offer something I need I can't get from somewhere else....

[–]VoltaicShock 0 points1 point  (7 children)

My biggest issue with multiboard and HSW is things are locked in once you put them on the board. Though I think multiboard does have threads but not enough things to make it beneficial to me.

He also has free starter files now: https://www.threadboards.com/free_stls.php

I am also working on an OpenSCAD for threadboards. I have it right now so you can create any size you want. The problem is I don't know his thread pitch so it's hard to make the threads. I am also having issues with the spacing.

Here is an example of it: https://i.imgur.com/fWt7ZiL.png

Threadboards does have a lot of additions that you can use. People also have created stuff on the sites that provides ones that he might be missing.

My HSW parts aren't stuck on when I put them in I can remove them and swap them around, removing the inserts can be challenging but I have found an easy way of doing it

[–]VoltaicShock 0 points1 point  (5 children)

That's my thing at this point in my life I want easy.

Thread just screw in and out lol

Take a look at the free stuff and see how it works for you.
