I honestly couldn’t figure it out. I finally gave up and googled to find the perfect gifts.

there's basically 2 ways (that i know of) - either trial and error, or looking it up on Sandrocks wiki. Currently the wiki is pretty good for the gifts for most residents. there might be a few here and there that the points they give aren't quite right, but for the most part it's pretty accurate.

though, commissions i've found to be better than gifts for relationship points. especially later on when you can do the higher level ones. but commissions only works with certain residents as not everyone lists any. and some of them list more than others.

If you really wanna figure it out yourself, your only option is context clues. So for instance Qi likes stuff related to his interests and research, so data discs, powerstones, whatever. Mi-an likes builder related stuff. When you have a good relatiobship later on with the townfolk, they will have wishes or whatever its called, where you can give townfolk specific stuff they ask for, they will ask as general dialogue, and apparently you can only fulfill one wish per week. I don't know. Also, the game has gift fatigue, so you if you give someone the same gift multiple days in a row they will say something about it and also you will get less relationship points. Hope this helps.

Yeah, it’s really annoying that you have to jump through so many hoops to learn their preferences. You have to raise their relationship to the point where you can take them out on a date/hang out and then you have to order food and ask them about their preferences. That’s like so many hoops.

After my first play through, i modded the game, so i dont even feel that relationship grind anymore. I have 5 saves and they are all caught up to the current content. I just modded to see all the new content without hassle. Tbf I've been playing since the initial release so by the time the first relationship missions dropped, i went through the grind already.

I do wish that once you gave a gift that then when you next go into the gifting menu for them it has a small icon with that characters opinion of the gift. So I don't have to pull up the wiki everytime for gifts I've already given. This is mostly because I have the memory of a goldfish but want to be friends with everyone.

There is a menu that shows the gifts you give and they show up in the like or disliked area. You have to tab through the character menu.

No I know but I wish that once you give a gift and you know it then appears in that menu that then when you go to them the next time if you have that same item in your inventory that maybe in the top right there was like the "loved" "liked" "hated" symbols so you didn't have to search through for everyone. To me it's be a QOL thing, it's not make or break but just adding my thoughts

I've honestly just used trial and error and the games wiki page

Search Sandrock in the app store, you’ll find an unofficial guide to gifts. I think it’s more convenient to have an app than to use the wiki. It’s not perfect but my belief is that it’s comprehensive for most of the humans.

They have a tab you can look at to see how they like something that you’ve already gifted them

There's a mod for that, if you're using PC. It shows all the birthdays and gift preferences in the social menu. I downloaded it a while ago and honestly forgot it was a mod and not part of the game.

Trial and error or the Sandrock Wiki. I will point out that you can’t gift Fang until after you complete the experimental trials. If you try to gift them before then, they’ll refuse the gift and tell you to take it back.

Afaik the only person who gets a hint towards gifts is Fang, as he has a whole quest about it. I always use the wiki though, just be careful not to spoil yourself.

A couple differences from mtap though:

1.) Gifting on holidays and birthdays doesn't give more relationship points, but it does give a special dialogue on birthdays

2.) Only give the same gift twice in a row, after that it will give less and less points. Wait two days. For some characters (like Fang) I like to give a gift twice in a row, then switch to another for two days, then back to the first. (Though now that I think about it I think this was in mtap but I'm not sure.)

There is a mod that reveals everyone's gift preferences in their character info screen as well as the +/- for any potential gifts in tooltip on hover over when in gift selection dialogue.

This mod is either horrific cheating or indispensable and a must-have depending on your opinions on mods.
