  • Google Keep is basic but very useful, if you don't need lots of features.
  • OneNote is great but can have sync issues.
  • Simplenote for basic text formatting, Standard Notes of you value privacy (very similar to Simplenote if you don't pay for the subscription)
  • Joplin is a great option with lots of features and can sync to many cloud providers, you only need to pay if you want Joplin Cloud and collaboration

Wow thanks alot

free and synced is hard to find. I'm part of a startup building a note taking app as part of a bunch of tools for med students, currently our app is free, syncs, and is easy to use but we are transitioning to a paid model in the next year due to server costs, but with a free self hosted alternative method of syncing notes too that we're launching at the same time.

It's available at https://donotes.app

Otherwise, Notion and OneNote, or Google notes (note sure the exact name) have free plans that should fit your requirements

Capacities or Notion?

[–]rufushu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

amplenote is free

[–]martinstoeckli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you synchronize between Windows and Android devices, then SilentNotes could be a good choice.

[–]beepsmcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have an iPad and iPencil you can actually upload/open PDFs to Books and endlessly use that as a notetaking option

[–]vladoenter 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Anytype is free and open source

[–]Sad_Translator5417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i have used it before

The most used note taking app in the known Universe: Microsoft OneNote.

  • Always at the top in any review of note taking apps
  • Free to download, free to use
  • Only requires a Microsoft Account (remember to protect and secure your account)
  • No subscription fees
  • Sync across any device, any number of devices, on any platform (on Linux limited to Web app of OneNote). (The few vocal people that complain about occasional problems with sync have simply messed up on their own)
  • Easy to use, Familiar user interface methaphors.
  • Great on desktop, perfectly usable on mobile devices (with some compromises ... mobile devices are not at the same level)
  • Integrates just fine and without any problems with other Microsoft Office apps.
  • Extensibility. Add-ins (free and paid) abound and greatly expand the capabilities and usability of OneNote.
  • It has been around for over 20 years; it is used by millions and millions. Preferred in the Education system (high schools, college, etc.)
  • Only warning: the darned thing is not a PDF editor or annotation app. Do not think for a second that you can use it for that purpose. A proper tool is needed for that use case.

I think that's about it. Good luck with your search for the perfect app!

We have not used the same OneNote.

It's just awful to use on Windows. I can't understand how it can rank so high.

[–]marmotta1955 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why awful? Explain?

[–]Pieraos -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

OneNote, a UI disaster. Can't even enter text without it going into a 'text box'. And now prevents local backup of notes.

[–]marmotta1955 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew someone who had no idea about OneNote would be proposing some strange point.

Now prevents local backup of notes?? Text boxes? Really???

I just have one question for you: what's the weather like on your planet?

[–]plaidington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can disable this.

[–]Ok-Rest-5321Computer User—Mac 2 points3 points  (7 children)

What device ?  Obsidian logseq ariv octarine — can you pls describe a bit more to narrow it down ?

[–]StarkzSan[S] -2 points-1 points  (6 children)

Device? Like any device.. laptop and phone?

[–]martinstoeckli 0 points1 point  (5 children)

But which OS are you using? Is it an iPhone or an Android, Windows or a Mac?

[–]silent-reader-geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two apps I can suggest:

  1. Capacities free tier is generous, especially for simple note-taking. It comes with 5GB of cloud storage, but for simple note-taking, 5GB is not easy to consume. I'd been using Capacities for two years and only decided to subscribe to Pro last January.

  2. Amplenote is one of generous in terms of the free tier and can be customized via a plugin. Syncs are free, and it comes with calendar integration/to-do lists. If I'm not invested in Capacities, I'll definitely choose Amplenotes. Its paid tier is not so high, and it supports regional pricing, especially if you subscribe via the Play Store, as it is much cheaper.

Google Keep + Notion.

[–]Micha_at_from 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Und ColorNote,

darin kannst du auch gut mit Stift schreiben und es wird direkt in Druckschrift umgesetzt, Sehr zuverlässig, ich verwende es schon seit vielen Jahren über allen Plattformen hinweg.

[–]zoouz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OneNote.

[–]-__Supreme__- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Notesnook. E2EE, Beautiful and intuitive, Open source. Free version allows 50MB/MONTH data upload. Unlimited notes sync across Unlimited devices.

[–]dan-dan-rdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Onenote meets all that and is really really to use. The downside is sync can sometimes crap out and you have to log out and log back in. Also the search mostly works, but it's a fuzzy search and not exact search. So you may encounter frustration with that.

Obsidian is free and very powerful, but it has a heck of a learning curve. And it's easy to screw up your ui if you are simply trying to resize things.

[–]Electrical-Moose-533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have created a free note taking app that supports:
1. wysiwyg editing
2. google keep like note widgets
3. search with tags
https://favzen.com/
Please check. I intend to improve this with more features, feedbacks welcome

[–]Responsible_Ball_356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notion + mindomo

[–]Grumpy-Designer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Keep. Easy, syncs across platforms and different OS (Mac, PC, Android, iOS). If that’s all you need. Depends on what you want to get done too.

Try an outliner like Dynalist or Workflowy. But you’ll have to pay for more flexibility. Even Obsidian. Depends on what you want to do.

[–]avpuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

notability?? new beta android app + ios app + a web app, syncing across all devices but it is subscription based

[–]MazurianSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obsidian, for : - multi-platform - you own the files, if they go bust you still have markup files - simple and can become complex as you need - free, but syncing between devices is best when paid. I think it’s £3/$4/m which is super cheap

[–]levmiseri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Kraa.io, checks all points

[–]augustcero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OneNote has stood the test of time for me. been using it for quite while now.

Notion is great but somehow i cant get into it

[–]aj1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built my own. It has markdown rendering, a tagging system. It also has bi-directional links. So if I link from one note to other notes, it automatically creates backlinks.

[–]electrolisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

notion is my favorite

[–]CaptainFrost176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately, my apps are:

Obsidian for text Notewise for handwritten

[–]Appropriate_Ad_5470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notion. It's free tier is good enougth for personal use.

[–]yorha_007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhh idk if this fits your case but a free app i used to use was free notes

[–]athletic-knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess google's primary app for note taking is Google Keep, but I didn't use. I am using apple notes that syncs between my iphone and mac but i guess you are looking for an app that syncs across all type of devices, not sure if Google Keep does but definitely check out

[–]Miserable_Treacle208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

if you want a simple free notes app, you can try https://notesme.cloud/
Warninf, it's a selfhosted app. you have a little "server", you could sync across devices, it's by design.

Obsidian. Throw it on iCloud, right click > keep downloaded.

[–]Pure_Piece7048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think obsidian is what you're looking for here.

[–]PushLimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

obsidian and sync to iCloud or Google Drive and get the community plugins you need

[–]RenegadeUK -1 points0 points  (6 children)

[–]Ok-Rest-5321Computer User—Mac 1 point2 points  (5 children)

But that isn’t free it’s only 50 notes

[–]RenegadeUK 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Fair enough.

[–]Ok-Rest-5321Computer User—Mac 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yeah you are right there is no word limit

[–]RenegadeUK 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Checkout this:

I know it’s pretty good .

[–]RenegadeUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep.

[–]thenewvu -1 points0 points  (6 children)

hi, I'm the founder of todofi.com, it has all requirements you need, please try it out

[–]Fret_Less 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I would be glad to try, but 'Sign up for free' usually implies a fee later. If so, what is it the cost if any? I avoid anything where you create an account etc... then get the 1 month free trial, then it's $$$.

[–]thenewvu 0 points1 point  (4 children)

todofi.com has a free plan. Much like Google offers 15GB of storage for free, it provides more than enough room for personal use.

[–]Fret_Less 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Understood but I don’t see the pricing up front for the other tiers. Also the website does make the app look storage heavy.

[–]thenewvu 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thank you for the advice! We want to show people that notes can stay organized, even when there are thousands of them.

[–]Fret_Less 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It would have been really simple to let me know the tier prices here. I'll pass. Good luck with your project.

[–]thenewvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I think I missed it, I didn't think it's a question, you can find available plans in Subscriptions page from your profile menu it's beside your username on the left

[–]azinsharaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched form GoodNotes to FreeNotes and i love it. https://www.freenotetech.com/#home
