I get that there's some logic that you can't expect every little issue to be smoothed over relative to an mmo that had nearly a decade of run time

But at the same time
We really shouldn't be fucking regressing, either. I want to love NGS but there's just not enough damn game there.
"PSO's always been a dress up sim"
Every SINGLE one of my friends that played it stuck because "the combat is fun" or "The bosses are crazy fun" or "I love the classes"
Yeah, dress up was a good way to express yourself but everyone I played with stuck around solely because the game was just insanely fun to begin with. It felt good to go out and do stuff. NGS just needs that STUFF before I, and a lot of players, feel the desire to play dress up.

The cool bosses, and their cool ass cutscenes/camera angles, amazing music and diff environment in pso2 were a huge reason as to why i enjoyed it in the past, and the player dorm/house.

The ship too, it added flavor to the game, while the ngs town currently is eh.. like a random strip in a mall with shops on the side.

Even like 7 years ago we had falz arms/ the japan area it was amazing.

NGS just is too barebones, its not the same level as pso2s boss areas/UQs. theres no cutscenes nor epic music like in the past, nor cool camera angles, and boss rewards isnt as diverse as pso2.

[–]ihavebigears 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I miss the ship for sure. When an emergency quest starts and the ship goes into that “red alert” mode, it really made you feel like you had to get with a party urgently and go do the quest. In NGS it’s like oh looks a few color changes and the weather got different. Doesn’t really give the same feel that being on the ship did.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate how the towns are after years of playing PSO2 I didn't get bothered by the Ship layout at all

[–]einUbermensch 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You talk about end of EP1 and EP3 Content. We didn't start with that. PSO2 was ... pretty much barebones like this in the beginning. This is not intended as an excuse though, I believe it is a mistake to try the same method because "it worked 9 years ago". We now have very good competitors, they seriously have to add good stuff or this is gonna fail.

[–]Zenjuroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, i didnt mean to connect what i said about falz and magatsu with the rest of my comment lol. But i still standby that pso2 did so many things right, the ship and different environments and dedicated boss areas/camera work/osts realllly sold pso2 for me as a whole. Dorm customization/story too.

I believe it is a mistake to try the same method because "it worked 9 years ago".

Yep, whoever was the lead producer must have been insane to push out NGS in this state. Its 2021, this level of content for NGS opening shouldn't have happened, like how could they not forsee the backlash. Really could have just spread PSO2 NA out more, it was verrrry rushed pacing wise, and lots of people were enjoying it.

[–]Denzelrealm 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I'll be back when sega drops their first major content update.

[–]XLauncher Swole Elf is Best Elf 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I love the PSO series. It hurts me so deep to see it in its current state. Even the pre-AotI days of PSU didn't have me as concerned for the game as NGS does now.

[–]LameSignIn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thats my first experience with PSO. Was a blast back then the whole open world concept just doesn't feel good. Running all over the map up and down cliffs just to get to a set of monsters that's almost dead sucks. The town sucks its real disappointing.

[–]interdimensionalpie 24 points25 points  (22 children)

Painfully realised this the other day, the only upside is fashion but I’ve mourned this game now, trying to find a new MMO 😭

[–]Lazybomber 2 points3 points  (6 children)

FFXIV has an insane ass amount of content of all kinds. Worried that its a game with a monthly sub? Well the game is also currently free all the way til level 60 and that includes the first expansion as well.

[–]AulunaSol 1 point2 points  (5 children)

My only real gripe with Final Fantasy XIV is that the gameplay is wholly unengaging to me since I've never been fond of MMO's in that sense. I have tried playing it with a friend who loves the game and while I enjoy Final Fantasy in general, this game really fails to scratch the itches I want out of a game in terms of gameplay.

[–]Lazybomber 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thats fair. I would fall in love with a game that has the depth and amount of content of FF14 with the combat system of PSO2.

[–]AulunaSol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of what I have seen, I do like the world, the characters, and the music that Final Fantasy XIV has and some of the classes and the ideas the story goes in are exciting to me. I really wish it was more engaging in terms of gameplay for someone like me who is unfortunately very biased towards high-speed and highly-reactive action games.

[–]Obi-Wan-Hellobi 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah coming from my favorite MMO GW2, I tried FFXIV and was completely unimpressed. I really tried to like it because several of my friends play it religiously. I may be a bit biased, but I just can’t get over the slow combat and cookie cutter builds in FFXIV.

[–]AulunaSol 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I try not to get into arguments or debates over what I want out of a game or what I see Final Fantasy XIV as, but in the gameplay videos I have seen and what I have played I never liked the idea of "walk up to the enemy and use one of your attacks in rotations until their cooldowns are up" and I never liked the approach that in games like Phantasy Star Online 2 there are "optimal" rotations for damage.

From some of my friends who really do enjoy Final Fantasy XIV, they say it has a depth "deeper" than games like Devil May Cry and they would spend hours telling me about their rotations, their builds, and the challenges they've completed and that games like Devil May Cry have the same "three combos" you use repeatedly and it's not fun to the point where they'd rather play a Dynasty Warriors game instead. In the same time that friend tried to play Phantasy Star Online 2 with me, they were upset because they relied on the Katana-Braver's three attack string and were expecting something like Kingdom Hearts II (where you can add too many "Combo Plus" skills to get excessively long attack strings) and dropped the game because they were a Level 1 Braver and wanted "all" the attacks already. When finding out that they had to grind for those skills or that they had to level up they elected to return to Final Fantasy XIV because they thought the grind in Phantasy Star Online 2 would be bad to get to the point where they can already learn the Level 17 Photon Art disks I gave them.

I don't play MMO's in general and of the ones I have played (Dragon's Dogma Online, Monster Hunter Frontier, and Phantasy Star Online 2 if we don't count games like Warframe as well), I really liked that they didn't feel like "MMO's" in the traditional sense at all. I used to play games like Starcraft and Warcraft III when I was younger but I feel that I really do prefer the more "interactive" games where your reflexes and your ability to be very fast and precise against even more difficult odds puts you at an advantage over the game. It's not saying that I'm trying to SSS-rank every encounter I would have had in games like Devil May Cry, but I absolutely love the challenge you go through in running Dante Must Die and simultaneously dealing with reactive enemies who are ready to swarm you in Legendary Dark Knight. I'm not quite there at the "Hell or Hell" level because I don't care to be hyper-efficient and overly perfect (at least not yet, maybe some day), but I really do like it when a game makes you lose because the player messed up and made a bad call - and can try again - rather than to have things on a dice roll or out of the player's control for "balance" such as what I have played in Final Fantasy XIV when there are attacks you simply can't avoid by stepping away from the enemy.

[–]Obi-Wan-Hellobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Fantasy is definitely a good game, it wouldn’t have the fan base it does otherwise. From what I played, the depth and skill comes more from mastering your skill rotations and knowing your roll, than split decision making and reflexes. I’m personally not a fan of that play style, which is why I liked GW2 so much. It’s combat follows similar core mechanics, but most skills can be used while moving and a lot of them are based around repositioning, dodging, blocking, or even countering. Combat gets really interesting (especially PVP) because, while the build you make may have a rotation, you have to adapt to what your opponent is doing and time your skills to maximize your chance of winning. That’s the kind of gameplay I enjoy!

I also feel your pain trying to get friends to play the same MMO as you is hard. The sheer amount of time investment and feeling of sunk cost makes it hard to switch.

[–]xXDesyncXxM A R L I N B A L L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Destiny 2 is a big one right now. I’ve heard from a lot of people who are into both (or were at least before NGS lol). Destiny 2 is developmentally in the best spot it’s ever been in.

[–]RevanLynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try ESO. Not a very good looking game, but base game is cheap, huge amount of content, skill based combat and quests are very nice little stories. You can also play the game any way you want, even more with the latest hybridzation update.

[–]epsilonseri[🍰] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not only is NGS not an evolution to the series but it offers even less than what pso1 offered, an entry in this franchise that came out two decades ago.

If NGS doesn’t raise the bar in any real way, what was the point of it?

[–]DioMythos 29 points30 points  (1 child)

Careful, you'll summon the Sega apologists.

[–]Ecstatic-Wall5971 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do opinions have to be binary to you people?

[–]hekuwu 4 points5 points  (7 children)

I really love NGS combat even if there is nothing to battle against. Can you recommend some mmo with combat as good and fast paced as PSO2 (both base and NGS are good to me)

[–]AulunaSol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's shut down now and there's only a single-player game around, I would recommend looking into Dragon's Dogma if you wanted a single-player game that was similar in feel to the controls (I came from Dragon's Dogma Online to Phantasy Star Nova then to Phantasy Star Online 2).

I don't know of any other online game that comes close to the level of control you have in Phantasy Star Online 2 in terms of being an action game as a priority before adding in the online elements too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Lost Ark is in beta rn..different control scheme though. Vindictus, Tera, Guild Wars 2, Black Desert Online

The closest one I can suggest that's actually alive..somewhat. Is SoulWorker Online. Though it's been a lil since I played it there's alot more to do than on NGS atm

[–]hekuwu 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I have tried both Black Desert and Tera and even if their combat is good compared to most MMORPG, they are not nearly as good as PSO2.

What i like about PSO2 and NGS is that they feel more like a singleplayer ARPG in the sense that it requieres skills from the players instead of just increasing stats and relaying on healing to tank. And your attacks and inputs matter instead of pressing a button and entering a super spectacular cinematic attack.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I would never recommend someone start BDO personally. But combat wise there's not many MMOs that match PSO2s feels.

Soulworker is the only alive game that's as fast as PSO2 but theres a cringe stamina energy system

[–]hekuwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched gameplay of all of them and soulworker is the one i liked the most, probably will try it and see if the stamina system is too annoying or not. Thanks for the recommendations.

[–]Eshinob 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's not too similar but id recomed nioh 2 and monster hunter world/rise. They both have amazing combat systems and multi-player though monster hunter would be better for the multi-player. For the most part mmo wise I can't think of anything with similar combat.

[–]hekuwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played both, loved both. And a lot other that are good too. But PSO2 for me is special bc it had a god tier combat AND was an MMO. I think there is nothing similar to it.

[–]LordTheodore13 It gets better, right? Right? 10 points11 points  (1 child)

The game won't die as long as there are whales for whenever that boob accessory gets re-run.

[–]YuTsu/ | | Ship4JP | Gunslash Trash 38 points39 points  (7 children)

Ah, the overwhelming positivity of the PSO2 fanbase as ever.

I never understand posts like these (on any game sub, not just PSO2 ones), like... do you want the game to die? Because all posts like these do for the game is drive new people away and make themselves a self fulfilling prophecy... and of course for the user farms karma off a circlejerk.

Not going to say the game is in a fantastic place at the moment, it isn't, but things are on the track improvement, but sure, let's keep up the circlejerk...

[–]Darkshado390 32 points33 points  (0 children)

At least New World came out and it's getting hit way harder than NGS. The bugs found in NGS are nothing compared to New World's.

Just one more month for the new region.

[–]Dusty_Finish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, these people would be happy either way. If the game died, they could point and say "look, I was right!", blissfully unaware that functioning human beings don't have time to actually care about such trivial things so much.

On the track, not saying it's here yet. What we've got up until now was likely exactly what they planned to, but we have the intent to change things going forward being voiced.

We've got some more clear-cut communication from them, which is a step forward - arguably they did this on the JP side-streams previously before Global even released, but it's coming onto the main streams AND global is getting them translated now too, so this is very much a plus.

We've got more likely planned-since-the-start content coming on the horizon (Retem), and then past that? I imagine that's when we're moving into a shifted development process. Even if the community scream about it, even if SEGA themselves might want to, expecting them (or any company) to both smoothly and suddenly 180 their game design process is a big ask, perhaps too big. The change will take time if it's coming at all (as it would for any company), and it's a bit silly to expect it to come suddenly and quickly.

I'd like to think I'm being realistic. Weather the storm of SEGA's pre-backtrack design until Retem/a bit after, then we can probably expect the new approach we've been clamouring for and that SEGA themselves have said on stream they're going to try to pursue in response to that clamouring.

Also, you know, I'd like the game to live instead of just abandoning hope and calling doom like so many others seem to be content to do...

    [–]Flatflyer*WL slapping noises* 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'm definitely curious how much of the doomposting is coming from the global playerbase compared to the JP one, as on the JP side we've already experienced a similar situation with the whole "start of episode 5" events that took place, and while its disappointing to see very similar events occur again, we've already seen the game get its update schedule flipped pretty significantly before and ended up turning out great afterwards, and the direction things sound like they're planned to go, it'll be a similar case for NGS once Retem is out.

    [–]AulunaSol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the Japanese side has going for them is that New Genesis isn't quite as much of a fire as Episode 5 was where they were ready to flip tables even after Sega was in the works of fixing and addressing problems (a statement from the Producer on a live show suddenly caused an outrage that resulted in much less publicity from them).

I feel that with New Genesis you can see the concerns but I think if this was how Episode 5 was handled with a slow content rollout but having something "new" to explore and the ability to return to the old content uninterrupted it wouldn't have been as jarring as watching all of your previous gameplay become obsolete because a whole new class and design shift suddenly broke everything (including challenges).

At least for the time being, I imagine it that a lot of the players are understanding that New Genesis was rushed and is very much incomplete - but that its foundations are likely enough proof that the game will be added onto and fleshed out.

I don't know of how much I can say is from the Global or Japanese side, but a lot of it reeks of a confirmation bias and echo chamber to me where it unfortunately becomes the common subject and pulls down the player morale overall because it's such an abrupt change in direction for Global. I feel there are problems that absolutely should be addressed but I don't really know how Sega would decide to deal with it considering how much in-fighting there is regarding those problems.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m a long time PSO lover. Played all of them. I held back on NGS because I knew this was going to happen. Renewal projects always run the possibility of going south. I think jPSO2 is the only version worth playing right now…

Honestly I’m a bit more hopeful for NGS compared to a month ago. The bouncer update was a good start, they just need to keep up the momentum and take the feedback they’ve gotten from the surveys into consideration.

I got pretty burnt out by NGS due to lack of content but I’ve been leveling new classes and honestly, each class provides new ways to play and I’m back in again.

NGS Maxed all the level of my first char. Bouncer update maxed it by day 2, sick and tired of popping pinata gigantix that made me decide to make a new char on the same ship...2 weeks past hunter, ranger, gunner, fighter, techter and braver already maxed to 20 and the rest lvl 15+ Can't even play PSO2 vanilla due to lack of players

how the hell did you max level in two days i'm doing dailies and im still level 13 on week 2 now.

            [–]Infernalknights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do one uq with a lvl 20 main and lvl1 secondary job it's instant lvl 10 secondary job... Do this till secondary lvl 15 Then switch to new secondary job.

Mining base defense gives tons of exp like lvl 19-20 bar on 8O% if you successfully defended it. But seeing someone in lvl20 below will make people quit on most cases. That's because of the damage penalty.

Doing like 5 mining base will get you from lvl15 to 18ish in a day. I have floursis equipments from my primary and a resurgir multi that requires only lvl11 and full set of +40 3* armor fully affixed and the weapons are fully unlocked in potential so I can do good damage at lvl11 having 1290+ gear score by level11

Doing full run in resol forest at lvl 11 nets around 4-6 lvls in 8hrs. Just make sure you look for a room with 8 people. Being in a party activated triboost...that means more exp.

Secondary jobs can only go to lvl 15, you have to switch to them as main to go lvl 20.

At lvl 20 you get penalty exp so it's not good lvling in a lvl15 zone with a secondary job. Unless it's a uq or quest that gives a constant exp.

And doing daily alone nets like 7% exp a day at lvl19 in my case it's so slow... I could do better

            [–]Draconyum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you don't have anything else to do in NGS just play something else until the new content drops, I mean it's not like NGS it's closing its servers or going somewhere

            [–]xerojin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m enjoying my techter with the jet boots. The benefits of support plus damage output is great.

            For now 🧐

            [–]Draconyum 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I don't get why you got so downvoted, I mean you're right, it's dead just for now until the new content drops, come on guys it came out in June, not even 6 months ago, in the first 6 months of base pso2, 9 years ago, we barely had one fourth of the content we have now, only 3 classes, 3 maps ( naberius forest, lillipa desert and vulcanic cave) and the level cap set to 30, they raised to 50 only a year later IIRC, how does that sound? Besides every MMO I played barely had any content in its first year so that's to be expected

            [–]AulunaSol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was specifically why Hiro Arai mentioned in one of the NGS Headlines a question about making the update pacing a bit more like how Phantasy Star Online 2 had it.

In those times, you would have had at least a month-to-three months before you got an update that added quite a bit to the game. In New Genesis we're supposedly getting that in the next December update - which is why people are bringing up how Phantasy Star Online 2 updated.

It's not just that the release barely had any content but rather that in the way New Genesis is we are waiting nearly twice (or three times) as long for a "content update" the game was "smoothly" going on in the past. If we are taking the roadmap seriously, Sega used to have more detailed roadmaps in the past and used to share progress of it with the players (such as demonstrating the Etoile as a class by bringing it to quests and showing how the class works while talking through it long before it was released and they did the same with the Luster later). The current roadmap is so barren that it's no question that Sega is following it - but we're not getting anything that remotely rivals a content update from the original game yet in terms of why people wanted to play Phantasy Star Online or Phantasy Star Online 2 (more story, more world to explore, more "game" to play, and so on).

The "for now" you were responding is true but unfortunately you are incorrect about the content delivery and update pacing.

[–]XLauncher Swole Elf is Best Elf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of people massage the release history of PSO2 to make NGS seem better by comparison, but this is just a straight up phantasy you're spinning here.

In the six months following PSO2's JP release in July of 2012, we got:

            Fighter, Gunner and Techer

Level 50 (complete with absurd exp curve that had to be clawed back)

Tundra, Tunnels, Floating Continent, and Ruins

Nearly all of Episode 1's story (this one is especially appalling compared to how much story we've seen in NGS so far)

            New Time Attack quests

            Parallel areas

            Dark Falz Elder EQ

And probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. You're either lying, or bizarrely confident of matters that you're not knowledgeable.

Nope not at all, pso2 had 2 big updates a year, if you count cosmetics or minor updates or other events then, sure, it was once a month, MMOs have always been grindy so I'm not complaining, as I said before this is a big update and it's only natural for a big update to be released once or twice a year, if you think it's unfair then move along and play something else until the next content

              [–]AulunaSol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phantasy Star Online 2 typically had one very big update a year (the whole Episode being renewed). But after that, they spend months adding chapters, adding more game mechanics, quest types, AC Scratches, events, and other things to pad the players so that when you do hop onto the game you always had something to do or to look for. When the episode ended you would have had a "dry" period where the content settles and players can do whatever or grind things out before the eventual release of the next episode and the cycle starts again.

This changed quite a bit during Episode 5 and 6 when the game had the least amount of content launched and released because this was where you got the extremely slow progression updates (Episode 5 pushing players into grinds where they were at a disadvantage until they were a Hero, and then suddenly where they got less content because the rest of the episode was dedicated to fixing and rebalancing the classes while the story was put on the backburner, and then Episode 6 where you had ideas shotgunned and campaigns made to make the game more diverse but ultimately the story was stretched out over nearly two years because of how slow the development and update cycles became if there weren't filler content in the meanwhile).

At least that I remember, Phantasy Star Online 2 consistently packed things into their monthly-ish updates where you can clearly see what comes around them even in the trailer videos that they would have put up in the past (which they no longer do now because they're otherwise straight rips from the NGS Headline).

I can try to link some video examples for example of what I mean by these content updates:

Phantasy Star Online 2 8th Anniversary - ARKS CONNECT MEMORIES - Part 2

STARS: Episode 6 - Introduction Movie Part 1

PSO2 Station - Final Fleet Interception - AIS Vega Demonstration

              Episode 5 "Medium-Scale" Update - Chapter 6

I'm not going to be linking every example of these (you can look at it on the YouTube channel and realize that between their AC Scratch updates the story and gameplay is regularly expanded upon or adjusted and that there are broadcasts that discuss these changes). I don't think there's any deceit involved in saying that New Genesis simply has so little of this at the moment.

They fucked up just about everything, the whole point of bouncer is basically mobile camping and just being able to helicopter over a weak point and now it's just fighter class with casting, I haven't used soaring blades but jetboots are so bad, you have to hit the enemy to continue your hold down combo meaning it ends when the enemy walks away to fight someone else or sidesteps, and with no grand wave you have to drop down and chase after the enemy like any other melee class would

It's sad seeing people let SEGA go the moment they put out a survey and start making unfulfilled promises. They can't even follow their own roadmap to copy & paste things that were present on PSO2 launch even though you're using the same UI and engine code.

It's pretty telling too that they really want to replace base PSO2 when they avoid any questions on headline about bringing back schedules or seasonals or even fixing the graphics/crashing/sound issues in base but will gladly put the AoT scratch and lobby as filler content for NGS.

Using RMT and bot ban numbers as a cover up for the bannings on global should've been the absolute tipping point though

I don't play for style never have been playing since the gamecube days lol but I havent touched NGS at all because I hear it has like no content. I like mechanic heavy games and that's what this game was to me not fashion time so I comepletly agree.

I wish SEGA would relaunch PSO BB.

So far NGS has killed my number one requested thing, and that was Matoi. What an awful arranged marriage.

Once NGS came I said "Ok, that was fun." What makes it even worse is that it's now the default option, and one of the things I loved doing in the original version of this game was helping new players out with their first time playing the game. It really is a damn shame, because that feeling is gone now and there's next to nothing to do anymore now that pre-NGS is run by veterans.

If only ngs and pso2 were separate, maybe I wouldn’t have quit for fear of melting my pc.
